Gamecube controller recommendations
 

I know I want to pick up a Wavebird just for the convenience, but I'm still not happy with the Gamecube's controller layout. Does anybody have any suggestions for controllers with a different layout?

Not quite sure that there are any. Maybe except for the driving wheel and the SNES controller.

The wavebird is still my controller of choice...

the PlayCube adapter can still be had for about 8 bucks and lets you use a PS2 controller with the Cube.

wavebird is my favorite controller EVER...but i know what you mean...the cube has an odd button layout that takes some getting used to.

That looks pretty good, especially since I have a PS2 anyway. Have you (or anybody else) actually used it? How well does it work?

I agree. Wavebird is the best, no doubt. If you absolutely can't stand the button layout then that may be an issue, however, I have a Wavebird and the controller that came packed in. The standard controller has never been unwrapped...

it depends on the games that you play. I love the GCN controller for all the games that I play but have not played any of the games people complain about (fighters mainly).

Another vote for the wavebird but the feel is the same as the original so if you are looking for a different feel look somewhere else

there is an SNES style controller that doesn't have the analog sticks but centers on the crosspad. The only thing is that you have to import it.

I was never a big fan of the Gamcube controller's layout either, but I hate using non-standard 3rd party controllers even worse. After I began playing a few games with the Wavebird, the controller layout became not so big a deal and learned to like it (well cope anyway).

Oh if only Wavebird had vibration.. it would be the end all perfect controller of all time sent to us by God himself.

I thought the reason Wavebird had no vibration was because the "rumble" feature would drain too much battery?

That's my understanding. Also, I'm not an engineer or anything, but might make it more expensive to produce, not sure how much communication comes from the console to the controller vs from the controller to the console without rumble, (not sure of there are ack signals sent back from the console) but seems it would be more if the console was sending back the rumble triggers...?

Yes that's correct.. actually PERFECT would have been a switch to turn it on or off. Or to just turn it of via the game's options to save battery, if you wanted. I had to switch to a regular controller when I got that stupid item in Zelda that vibrates when you are near a secret.

definitely get the wavebird, the convience is unmatched, it gives you a lot more flexibility in playing, you really have to get one to truly grasp it, and this is coming from a skeptic.

If you want a different layout you can get a PS2 convertor and use the ps2 controller on the GC. I got one in anticipation for Soul Calibur 2 and it works perfectly, you don't even notice that your using a different controller. They are fairly easy to find too online and inexpensive, and i'm talking less than the price of a new GC controller.

When using the PS2 convertor does the button layout stay pretty close to the GC controller or do you have to reconfigure it on your own. Haven't used one so I don't know how it traslates.

It translates pretty accurate, friend has one and I used for RE, felt like I was playing RE on the good ole playstation. Where can you find them for $8? Because I have only seen them for about $15 plus shipping
