Xbox HDTV Question

My friend has a plasma tv in his basement that he recently purchased, and I am wondering about a few things after bringing over my Xbox to play him. There are 2 component inputs, one does 480i/480p. The other does 480p, 720p, and 1080i. When I run the Xbox through the hidef input I can't see the dashboard. The only games I have played so far are Halo, DOA3, and PDO which all ran fine, but I was wondering if a game doesn't support 480p will I not be able to play it while it's hooked up to that input? I can see the dashboard in the 480i/480p input. Does anyone else have this problem? I just find it strange that I wouldn't be able to see the dashboard without switching inputs everytime.

it's because the dash in not in progressive scan
so you only be able to see it if the xbox is hooked into
the 480i/480p input

480i = interlaced = non progressive

that's a dumb design for a TV - making a component input do either 480i/480p or 480p/720p/1080i, but not both. how stupid is that?

I assumed that was the problem, but I just couldn't believe that the tv wouldn't upconvert the dash so you could at least SEE it. I mean how annoying is it that you have to actually switch the input on your tv to change settings. Oh well, it's his tv not mine. If I ever buy an HDTV I'll make sure I won't have problems like that.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

You'll never have that problem if you go to avsforum.com. You can learn a lot about HDTV and PDP's before you start looking for one.
