Gaming as a degree/profession, any thoughts?

What if college and universities offered a degree called 'Gaming'? Would that ever be plausible?

The closest thing would be testing, which most people use to get into programming as a career.

You'll probably want to go to one of the schools that specialize in it, like Digipen. Nintendo of America used to only hire people from Digipen. I don't know if that is still true or not.

There's something to be said for professional game testers.

I've been wanting to get into this, but figured it was too far-fetched of an idea to even think about, since whenever I've mentioned it, responses have been "hahahahahhahaha", "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh", etc. I've never heard of this Digipen, but I guess I'll look into it.

just remember, as a game tester, you have to play many games that you wouldn't want to play...for many many hours. but if you think you can trudge through that (personally that would be hell for me) then maybe you should look into it. also, maybe some type of journalism might be related to that field if you want to be a reviewer.

Didn't EGM do a couple of articles on this a few issues back... I think they mentioned several schools. Obviously programming and art courses could be geared toward this.

when this happens.....just mention a little fact that the videogame industry made more money than the box office last year, and it raked in somewhere around 13 billion dollars.
