I've never found that odd or interesting.

PC gaming and console gaming are almost apples and oranges, which in and of it's self is an interesting discussion IMO. I'll start a thread on it rather than risk hijacking this one.

My gosh people its not the end of the world. can't we just post the top ten games without getting into a philisophical debate over it? Is it subjective ...yes no kidding. that doesn't mean you just sit there complaining about it. post and get your opinion heard. The title of the thread is general enough to post whatever you want. Who cares if YOUR top ten includes consoles, pcs, game and watches, or those pet games that come on a keychain. just post and let your opinion be heard. Just because they are apples and oranges doesn't mean that you cant compare them. I enjoyed Zelda LTP better than MOH:AA and they are totally different creatures.

I have no way of knowing which games are the best, but here are the ones I've enjoyed the most, in no particular order:

Twisted Metal 2 (PSone)
Sam and Max (PC)
Tie Fighter 2 (PC)
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (SNES)
Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES)
Myth 2 (PC)
Fallout 2 (PC)
Age of Empires II and AoEII: The Conquerors (PC)
Grand Theft Auto III (and Vice City) (PS2)
Half Life (PC)

Hiro11 02-12-03 06:20 PM

10. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within (PC) a revolutionary game when it came out. It still has the best story line of any game I've ever played.
9. Tetris (everything): has anyone ever not had visions of Tetris peices sliding together in front of your eyes after playing this game?
8. The Curse of Monkey Island(PC)- terrific action/adventure/humor game that I still play from time-to-time. Hilarious and challenging.
7. Jet Set Radio Future (XBox)- this game blew my mind when I first played it. The combination of graphics, gameplay and sound is unbelievable.
6. Zork (PC)- old school text-based game. I remember talking to my friends for hours on the phone trying to figure out parts of it. Terrific stuff.
5. Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)- the best weapons based fighter ever and still impressive to this day.
4. Starcraft (PC)- what can you say about this game: addictive, fun and endlessly complicated.
3. Mario64 (N64)- the best Mario game I ever played. I still love it.
2. Halo (XBox)- The best FPS ever, and I've played them all from Castle Wolfenstien 3D to Marathon to Doom to Duke Nukem to Quake to Unreal. This one beats them all. If you don't believe the hype, you haven't played it.
1. Street Fighter 2 (SNES/GameBoy Advance)- Deep yet easy to play, incredibly well balanced, tons of fun. I still play it all the time.

JoshUnt 02-12-03 08:35 PM

I picked these 10 based on how much entertainment value alone, which I think is how games should be rated :)

10. Animal Crossing (GCN) - any game that can suck my GF (into playing it )has to be good
9. Super Mario Bros (NES)
8. RBI (NES)- best baseball game ever
7. Kings Quest III (PC) - way before the point and click method
6. Tomb Raider I (PS1)
5. Dragon Warrior I (NES)- best RPG ever just a bit short
4. Halo (XBOX) - best FPS period
3. Legend of Zelda (NES)

for #5 are you thinking of Golden Axe? That one's a classic.

skar 02-13-03 10:23 AM

10. Kid Icarus (1988?, NES)

They need to remake this classic for the Cube.

9. California Games (1987?, Atari 2600)

Best 2600 game ever IMO.

8. Gran Turismo (1998, PSX)

This game took driving games to the next level. So many cars, so many customizations. Getting the International A license was very difficult.

7. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (1988, NES)

The game is very challenging and fun despite having the same acronym as a bad ISP.

6. FF7 (1997, PSX)

A giant leap forward in RPG design. It felt like the first game to really show off the power of the playstation.

5. Dragon Warrior (1989, NES)

The birth of the modern RPG. I've been hooked on RPG's since I read about Dragon Warrior in Nintendo Power.

4. Super Mario Bros (1995, NES)

The birth of the platformer.

3. Castle Wolfenstein 3D (1992, PC)

The start of the FPS revolution.

2. Tony Hawk (1999, PSX)

This game made its competition look 10 years outdated. I spent almost every free moment for over a month playing this game. And when I wasn't playing I was imagining rail to grind combos in the real world.

1. FF9 (2000, PSX)

Simply one of the greatest entertainment experiences ever. Vivi is probably my favorite video game character ever. He brought back fond memories of the original Final Fantasy.

Close calls:
SSX (PS2)
Lode Runner (Apple IIe)
Final Fantasy (NES)
Xenogears (PSX)

It sounds like he was talking about Streets of Rage for the Genesis, which was a great game.

(I don't think there were any trash cans in Golden Axe :D )

Golden axe was cool (played it to death on 4 different platforms ;) ) but steets of rage had way more depth. I was playing streets of rage 3 last year and marvelling at how good it still is :).

I'm a PC gamer, so all the games on my list are PC games. This list changes once in awhile, but normally the top couple games stay the same.

10. Dunno what I'm going to put here yet...

9. Day of the Tentacle - My favorite of all the adventure games. Back in the early 90's, these were pretty much all I played. This was the best of them.

8. Dune II - The grandfather of Real Time Strategy games. I played this one more than any of the better looking, more improved ones.

7. Fallout 2 - Even though I knew about this one and had heard how good it was, I managed to miss this one for quite awhile. I got hooked on it thanks to my roommate. Fantastic setting, getting away the fantasy aspect normally reserved for RPGs. Great story, and you can do just about anything you can imagine.

6. X-Com: UFO Defence - Ahh what a great strategy/action game this was. I still remember my first encounter with the dreaded Chrysalid. I didn't care for the sequel as much even though it was basically the same game.

5. X-Wing - Best space flight sim ever! And it's Star Wars. Major plus for that. And the trench run. This game was pretty tough, tough enough for me to normally give up on a game, but I kept at it. Tie Fighter would be here too if it wasn't so easy.

4. Ultima VII: The Black Gate + The Forge of Virtue - My first foray into the Ultima series, so this game has special meaning for me. It was also my first experience with the CRPG genre. I remember being in awe of the level of interactivity and with the engrossing story. I also remember how much it taxed my 386-SX 16MHz machine.

3. Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters - This game had a little of everything: arcade action, strategy, and adventure elements, all rolled up into one of the best written stories in PC game history. Fantastic MOD music, great humor and awsome gameplay make this one of my all time favorites. And thanks to the guys at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ I can play the game on my current PC.

2. Planescape: Torment - My new favorite RPG, supplanting Ultima VII. The most intelligently written and interesting plot of any game I have ever played. Some great enhancements to the Infinity Engine made it a huge improvement over Baldur's Gate. It was one of those games that I didn't want to end.

1. Civilization - The game that almost ruined my life. I swear, I was addicted to this game like crack. My claim to fame (at least to my friends) was beating the Emperor level before the copy protection came up. I love both of the subsequent versions of the series, but this one I played more than any other.

Some others that don't quite make it into the top 10:

Alone in the Dark
Tie Fighter
Conquest of the Longbow
The Adventures of Willy Beamish
Warcraft 2
Diablo
Diablo 2
Wolfenstein 3-D
Doom 2
Full Throttle
Sam and Max Hit the Road
Syndicate

Computer games, in my humble opinion, (whether it's popular or not) are a completely different genre from video games, more commonly referred to here as console games. Just as board games are different from video games. I don't agree with the assertion that PC can be a comparable game platform, when the sole purpose of a computer is not, in general, for playing games.

I should have made this clear from the start, I admit. My bad.

Best PC would have to be:

The Sims
Doom
Command & Conquer
You Don't Know Jack
Medal of Honor

PC is still COMPLETELY different from console, and, as another poster alluded to, it is completely unfair to take a $1000 machine and pit it against a $200 one. One might make the argument that similarily 'archaic' systems like NES cannot compete against the PS2, but, by my answers, you can see that I would disagree.

This is sure to cause an uproar as well, but as a gamer, I can tell you that I'm not all that impressed with Computer games in general anyway. It doesn't appeal to me. I type on a computer. I search the web on a computer. I dislike playing games on a computer. It feels unnatural to me. Much like bathing in tomato juice. The original practice of using a keyboard to play when I was in High School has perhaps ruined me permanently.

You say that, Yet I 1st played 4 out of your top 10 on a computer:
Jungle hunt
Halo
Final Fantasy
Grand theft auto

My $600 computer can and does play games from 1985. When you combine the costs of all these different consoles, you are paying just as much money.

Nice list BTW, however, no "highbrow" top 10 is complete without M.U.L.E. in its list.

First, I disagree that PC and console games can't be lumped together. A game is a game. I play both equally and don't differentiate. Controls and presentation may be different, but are you not entertained?!!

5) Unreal Tournament (PC)- This is what really got me into online gaming. This game kept me up til 3 am for months- and this when I had to go to work at 6am.
4) Super Street Fighter 2 (SNES)- What else can I say other than that I spent the better part of a college semester playing against other people in my dorms and having tournaments.
3) M.U.L.E. (Atari 800)- I played this game so much, I'd use dry erase markers on the monitor to track amounts of resources.
2) Archon (Atari 800)- Maybe it's fond memories, maybe it's just that I was young then, but I would play this and MULE exclusively for eons. Nowadays, I mix up my gaming constantly.
1) Military Madness (TG16)- Simple and perfect. I spent months making it through all the maps. Then I switched it up and played with the computer's forces and went through it all again.

Can't...resist...naming...honorable mentions:: Medal Of Honor:AA (PC), Tetris (Gameboy), Age of Empires 2 (PC), SSX (PS2), Laser Blast (Atari 2600), Golf (NES), Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (PS)

cleaver 02-13-03 11:10 PM

1. Clearly Game Boy Tetris, the only game you can play on the toilet.
2. GTA: Vice City
3. Final Fantasy 7
4. Goldeneye
5. Gran Turismo 3
6. Metal Gear Solid
7. Super Mario Bros 3
8. NFL 2K3 (XBOX) I refuse to put ancient sports games no one plays anymore when the newer ones are superior
9. Final Fantasy 3
10. NBA Street

KingSmoth 02-14-03 12:38 AM

10) Legend of the Red Dragon
Sure, this is only a BBS game, but holy crap, I was addicted to this for two years; it was my life, and I almost failed my freshman year of high school because of it.....
9) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Only last summer did I finally find a copy of this game, and it did not disappoint. I've spent the last week or so playing non-stop, and I'm about halfway through the inverted castle, expecting to finish this weekend(had to take time off for classes, doh!). Amazing soundtrack btw.
8) Soul Calibur
Best fighting game ever, and at the time was my sole reason for buying a Dreamcast(though I now know there's a whole lot more awesome games for the DC)
7) Duke Nukem 3D
I spent almost as much time playing this game against friends as I did playing Warcraft II. Best deathmatch I've ever had.
6) Contra
I have so many fond memories of this game, and it has brought about so many other great games(Super C, The Alien Wars, Hard Corps, Shattered Soldier). If there's one moment in video game history that I will always remember, it would be my cousin and I inputting The Konami Code for some two-player action.
5) Super Mario Bros. 3
My favorite Mario game ever. I just thought all the different suits, items, warp whistles, and lands were amazing at the time. Even now I can play this game for hours on end, and never tire of it.
4) DOOM
The sole reason I put my parents through a few years of hell, hearing me whine about getting a PC because "I need it for school".
3) WarCraft II
I spent countless hours playing this game against a friend, as well as through campaigns when he was at work. If not that, then working on maps, planning strategies, etc. Best PC game ever(admittedly, I haven't been a PC gamer for a year or so).
2) Metal Gear Solid
Great storyline, action, stealth, weapons, and enemies, as well as a badass named Solid Snake. Yes, I did play the original NES games, but I don't have any remembrances of them like I do with this one.
1) Resident Evil 2
I'm a Resident Evil fanatic, and although I love the entire series(exception: Survivor), none of them have hooked me the way RE 2 did. As the first one that I played through, it's given me the most jumps and surprises out of the series, and the only game that nearly gave me a heart attack at the tender age of 17(
Spoiler:
Mr. X smashing through wall when getting Golden Cog
).

There is my list. I was a hybrid gamer until last year when wonderful Carpal Tunnel Syndrome kicked in. Since then I've given up PC gaming, and had to cut back on console gaming a bit. CTS hasn't bothered me in a while, though I do get a bit sore if I game for too long.....

DarkestPhoenix 02-14-03 10:56 AM

Thanks RoQuEr...however, while I like ROMS, too, you can hardly call those four computer games. All that has happened to allow you to play them on your PC is that some ingenious li'l fellow has concocted a way to 'steal' the games onto another format. I'm not sure on the legality of that. Not that I have a moral issue with it, mind you, I have at least a thousand myself...but, I think that just because you CAN play them with a PC does not directly credit the computer gaming argument, when another type of system has created it, marketed it and made it popular.

No roms involved. Jungle hunt was on the C64, and the other 3 were legitimate PC releases. Well, actually my copy of Halo is a legitimate alpha PC release, but it will be out for PC soon, Right?

DamingR 02-14-03 01:25 PM

1. Demolition Derby (Bally/Midway Arcade)
2. Mortal Kombat II (Arcade Version Only)
3. Baseball Stars (NES -- Hands down, best baseball game ever)
4. The Legend of Zelda : Link's Awakening (GBC, Best and most under-rated Zelda game)
5. Civilization (Original PC)
6. NBA Jam (Original 4-Player Arcade)
7. Warcraft II
8. Goldeneye
9. Super Mario Bros. 3
10. EA Sports Football (Not a perfect franchise, but consistently the best of the genre)

While being entertaining, WC3 is definately a step back from starcraft and WC2. I think the general consensus among the "elite" players is that they tried too hard to draw in both RTS xcraft players, AND campaigning diablo players, but ended up making sacrifices for both.

In terms of strategy, you are far more limited. Every game goes more or less the same, with few really innovative tricks. I've watched way too many replays, yet none stand out cause they are all about the same. Heavy armor is such a big disadvantage that nobody builds high level creatures, and spellcaster actually do attack damage, so you get people who mass tier 1 melee or mass spellcasters.

While there are 4 races, they are all about the same. There is nothing exceptional about any race, and each race has a unit that can do more or less the same thing. SC had 3 completely different races, and while the humans had no equivalent to the masses of zerg, the zergs had nothing even remotely similar to a siege tank. But every race had a counter to every other kind of attack, so it was Diverse AND balanced.

Finally, with the addition of creeps, many games can go 20 minutes without any interaction between the two players. Both can do their own thing, level up, raise an army, and then wipe out the opponent in 1 attack. Where is the fun in that?

While the 90 food limit is a nice idea, they chickened out at the end. With 90 it is still possible to overwhelm an opponent by sheer numbers. Had they cut it off at 60, then battles would be all about who is the best micromanager, instead of the war of attrition that it is now.

While entertaining, WC3 is about as strategic as the tank rushes of Red Alert were.

1) Street Fighter 2 Turbo SNES
2) Counter-strike PC
3) Xenogears PSX
4) Final Fntasy VIII PSX
5) Final Fantasy VII PSX
6) Batman NES
7) Gran Turismo 3 PS2

My list doesn't really need an explanation, they are the games I have grown up with up until now, currently I own every single title on the list andif I were stranded on an island with these (and hopefully food, water, and a lady) I would get by.

I'm also a hybrid if that is what you want to call it, give me your top 10 pc games then. As a side note, when I hear "video game" I think console, if I want to describe a game I play on the computer then ity is "computer game".

Top Ten Computer Games
1. X-Com (Best Game ever!)
2. Civilization 1, 2, 3

There's no need to go any further.

Any Top 10 list MUST include these two. This should almost be considered an objective truth. :) And since they're both available for PSX, there's no way to hide behind the 'PC vs console' technicality.

your going to flame me for this, but i really dont like either x-com or the civ series'

I tried Civ 2, but I couldnt get into it. However, I loved X-Com, and it easily finds it's way into my top 10 list. I really wish they'd remake the original for the 21st century.

Here is a rough list, no particular order

X-Com
Fallout
Fallout 2
Duke Nukem 3D (sadly, the last couple times I tried playing this, I started feeling queasy)
Half-Life
Jedi Knight
Grand Theft Auto III & Vice City
Out of this World (interestingly, this game also came out on the Apple IIGS. The GS used the same microprocessor as the SNES, and this was sort of an experimental port. I didnt have an accellerator card though, so I had to run it in a really small window. Shame there was never a sequel, it had a cliffhanger of an ending.)
Warcraft II
TIE Fighter
IL-2 Sturmovik (if you havent played it, it's quite simply the finest combat flight sim ever. Certainly the best warbird sim)

My favorites:

1. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
2. Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)
3. Unreal Tournament 2003 (PC)
4. Sega Tennis 2K2 (PS2)
5. Shadow Hearts (PS2)
6. Unreal Tournament (PC)
7. Quake III (PC)
8. Warcraft III (PC)
9. Starcraft (PC)
10. Legend of the Dragoon (PSX)

and worthy of mention are also Chrono Cross (PSX), Doom (PC), Tekken Tag Tournament (PSX)--love the bowling!--, and Jedi Knight II (PC).

For me here are some names that revolutionized the gaming industry (in no particular order):

1. Mario
2. Metroid
3. Zelda
4. Sonic

Doesn't matter which one. For the most part, any game from these series would bring hours of entertainment.

I got through the whole post, but started skimming after the first few pages. Figured if I kept reading lists they were going to end up in mine whether they deserved it or not. After posting will take another look.

Couple'a things that I did see:
- Other than stand-up arcade games (although I included one), the lot of them can go in one list. All played at home (alright minus the Gameboys but I do not play 'em) in a similar format or way.
- Although those games that effected the greatest change in the industry are of importance, I just play 'em. So here are the games that I played the most, which is my defining reason for including them.

Most Played Top Ten - in no special order / wasn't countin' hours

Diablo 2 - Lord of Destruction (PC)
-The add on made the game. Just about everything I love in a video game. Yes, it is repetitious and I wish to see a few changes but the 1.10 patch may help.
Great Moment – Hearing my woman hoop with joy when her Barbarian got through Normal. Her first completion of a video game in years..

Warcraft 1 & 2 (PC)
- Brilliant repeat playability as either race. Utterly different. Still have not tried the third one.
Great Moment – “Stop poking me!”

Command & Conquer 1 & 2 (PC)
-Started me down the road for gaming again. Used to play at an internet cafι, where you could hear your friends yell when you strafed them.
Great Moment - “You Ion Cannoned my Tiberium Field?” / “So that is where you hid all those Stealth tanks?”

EA Sports NHL 1997 (PS1)
-The greatest video hockey we ever played. Balanced the video effects with great gameplay. Every other one since has been flawed. Of course it is the one with Forsberg on the front.
Great Moment – breaking S. Federov at the blue line / the first Colorado Cup / the first Phoenix Cup

NHL 1993 (SG)
-My first hardcore hockey game. Met a great friend playing this at a party.
Great Moment - almost winning the Stanley Cup with Ottawa / Repeated Toronto vs. Montreal 7 game wars with my roommate.

Robotron (*arcade)
-We got so good at this we could kill hours. Rolling the score over was the goal. Simple genius of a video game. One guy. Many enemies. Save the family.
Great Moment – taking breaks and still standing upon return

Mortal Combat 2 (SG)
-The first fighting game I played a lot and we played it to death.
Great Moment – the ginsu move of Baraka / the pickup move of Baraka

Doom II (SG & PC)
-Just played it and played it. You all know how good it was.
Great Moment – My friend Dave finding a seal in 2 minutes after I had looked for 3 hours. Alright a great moment for him. / The flood of Hellspawn rolling down the hill in the middle of the lake.

Halo (Xbox)
-Speaking of flood, we would still be playing this is the co-op game had a more precise save option. We would still be trying to save those Marines
Great Moment – Sticking a plasma grenade to my partners helmet. / listening to Grunts panic / the first time an Elite laughed after killing me

Resident Evil 1 (PS1)
-Horrifying and utterly original. Never as good in the rest of the series. The action was better in the others, but the replayability was never there.
Great Moment – the first time going under from a Zombie attack
Worst Moment in the other RE games – “All I get is new clothes?” %^$&*#$

Off the top of my head, and definitely not set in stone....

1. Super Metroid
2. Super Mario World
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. Zelda: A Link to the Past
6. Mario 64
7. Metroid Prime
8. Final Fantasy III (or VI by the japanese numbering scheme)
9. Goldeneye
10. Soul Calibur

One change. Put Zelda: The Wind Waker at 9, knocking Goldeneye to 10 and Soul Calibur out of my top ten.
