The Sims PS2 - Anyone?

I'm amazed at the total lack of discussion about the Sims for PS2. Seeing how it has become the best selling PC game of all time I figured more people would be picking it up and talking about it. I haven't actually picked it up myself but I am curious how they did translating it to PS2 and if PC owners will be tempted to buy it on PS2 as well.

It is also coming to GC and X-Box this Spring. I personally have not picked it up yet, but my wife would love to play it I am sure.

If I were to get anything in the Sim Universe now, it would be Sim City 4.

Which is a great game!! (And a total change of pace from what has ruled my life for 3+ years).

Imagine what EA could do if they bought the Sims to X-box with Live support for MP (just 2 players) or downloading new items for your house. Somehow I doubt they will do that, they seem very inent on keeping with straight ports.

The review in EGM seemed to indicate that the PS2 version wasn't a straight port of the PC version.

no they did jazz up the ps2 version with more competition + exclusive items.
example: the ps2 verision is 2 player and have a lot modes like who can make the most friends in the a set time stuff like that.

I'm waiting to see what the other console versions will bring.
ie on the xbox having live compatiblies more exclusives etc
if in the end the all turn out equal, ill probably get it for the gamecube simply because the wavebird is my favorite wireless controller (was not impressed with logitech solution for the x and ps2) and I can play from my couch :D

Love The Sims on the computer. I'll pass on the PS2 version, as I don't think there's enough new material to merit a second purchase.

gotta love Goodfellas :D

I picked up the Sims for PS2 as part of the Lamestop trade in deal. It's worth picking up just for the "Get a life" mode, which plays out like a bunch of scenarios. Really cool, I'd say pick it up if you can get a good deal.

What deal is that?

the thread about the "EB deal on DMC2" tells all

:D

Actually the EGM review says it's better than the PC version.

It has some new goal oriented mode. You can actually "beat" the game now by reaching certain life goals.

I've never been interested in these games before (mainly as I don't like open ended gameplay) but the EGM review and feature along with the new goal-oriented mode has me thinking about picking it up.

Gallant Pig 01-17-03 06:32 PM

I got the feeling the goal-oriented mode is more of a tutorial than anything. I doubt it could be better than the PC version when the PC version has like 4 different addon packs you can add to it, like pets for example. Maybe they mean just the standalone.

Josh H 01-17-03 06:38 PM

It's supposed to be a fairly in depth mode. Start in an apartment or small house, move on through better houses, new jobs etc. But I haven't heard how long it is or anything more specific.

It would be better than the PC version for me simply because I can't stand playing games on my PC. I spend enough time sitting here doing papers and research for school, don't want to sit here and play games too. :D

My wife rented it today. She wanted to buy it but I heard it is a meory card hog so I told her to wait till the XBOX version comes out. I'm not going to buy another PS2 memory card for this game.

I don't think they will do anything special for the XBOX or GC versions but I think they will be just as good as the PS2 so I wanna wait the extra 2 months.

Josh H 01-17-03 07:38 PM

My gamestop isn't doing the trade in deal for The Sims. Oh well, I'll just rent the PS2 version to see if I like it and wait for a deal.

That's an awful idea that goes against everything The Sims stands for.

That's why I think it's more of a tutorial mode really, after you go through it you unlock the real Sims game, the one where you can do anything.

Anyone here doing The Sims Online?

Josh H 01-17-03 08:52 PM

It's not an awful idea. The normal mode is still there. I just hope this is more than just a tutorial, and is fairly lenghty. I've never been able to get into open ended games. I have to be working toward something or I just get bored. I'll give this a rental next week when I have some time off and check it out.

From the way I understand it, you can still pretty much do anything in the goal mode, or at least you can try to achieve the goals however you want.

I don't play PC games either, but do agree that the EGM feature and review make this sound like it could be a lot of fun.

djones6746 01-18-03 08:33 AM

I'll pick this up when there is a good sale price for it.....not in the market for $49.99 games any longer. Especially when game prices seem to be falling within 6-8 months after the initial release of a game.

ecarland 01-18-03 08:41 AM

Well right now Circuit City is giving you a FREE $10 Gift Card when buy the Sims for PS2 or Sim City 4 for PC. I went to Best Buy and they matched Circuit Citys offer.

I remember i got The Sims for my PC about two years ago i think for Chrismtas and i loved it. It totally consumed all my time for about a month, i was hooked. Then i got some of the expansion packs and has some fun with it. I really want to get it for my PS2, but like others here said, i dont know if i want to pay 50 bucks for it. Maybe if it goes down a few, ill definetly get it.

I picked this up on Thursday. Went back to Gamestop with 3 games and this time they said I only needed two and that they where doing the 2 games and get it for $9.99 deal. I took the third game to EB and traded it in to preorder zelda to spite them for giving me the runaround. :D

At any rate, the game is pretty good. I've only played the "Get A Life" mode. It's definitely not just a tutorial. I've probably put in around 8 hours and I'm only on the 4th out of the 7 "levels." Basically there's just a set of goals you have to accomplish in each house. You start out living with your mom, then get your own place, then move in with slob. etc. Goals are things like getting promotions, improving the house, getting a new roommate, "scoring" with some one, throwing a good party etc.

BTW you don't have to beat this mode to unlock the normal sims game. All you have to do is finish one objective (which takes like 10 minutes). However, if you do well in the missions you unlock items that you can't buy otherwise. I believe these are items that weren't in the PC game.

It's definitely not worth picking up if you've got the PC version, as it's basically just the original along with a hodgepodge of things from the expansion packs (though certainly not all or even most of them). The only real addition is the 2 player challenges, which I haven't tried out.

But if you're like me and have never played it, it's worth giving a shot. Even if you don't think it's your cup of tea. I'm not a huge fan of open-ended games, but the EGM review and feature got me interested and I'm glad I picked it up. Especially since it only cost me $10 and a couple crap games I didn't like anyway. I still thing it's a little overrated, but it is addictive and unique. I'm afraid it'll wear out fast, but time will tell on that one.
