Recommend me a good FPS for PC

I don't play a lot of computer games (which is why I'm not usually in this forum), but I'm looking for a good first person shooter to play on my PC.

I've played and enjoyed: Half Life (Original, plus Blue Shift and Opposing Force), Gunman Chronicles, Quake II and III, Mortyr (not so good).

My system runs on Windows 98, and I have a Pentium II processor (antiquated, I know, but I can't afford to upgrade right now), so I can't run some of the newer games.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if you'll be able to run these games on your comp, but some of my favorite fps' are:

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Brilliant, immersive WWII fps.

Delta Force: Land Warrior - A fun military based game. AI isn't that great though.

Jedi Knight 2: Dark Forces - Fps in the Star Wars universe. I doubt that you'd be able to run the third JK game, Outcast, though.

Serious Sam - A fun mindless blast-fest. Very inexpensive too.

If you like multiplayer games, then you can't get much better than Counter-Strike, a mod for half life. It's a free download.

You might be able to run America's Army. Wouldn't hurt to try...the price is right: FREE: www.americasarmy.com

Unreal Tournament will run on your system, and the game is great.

Clive Barker's Undying is another bargain title that is a lot of fun.

And you simply must try No One Lives Forever.

I'd recommed finding a mod for Halflife. There are some great mods for Halflife, plus you know that your system can handle it.

I must echo Groucho's recommendation of Unreal Tournament. Classic FPS action, looks and runs great on older systems, huge online player base with plenty of new mods to keep it interesting, and available just about anywhere for $10 or under. If you want to play a stand-alone adventure, try finding Totally Unreal for about $15. It bundles Unreal and Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition in one box.

I may be revealing myself as a complete idiot, but what do you mean "mod" for Halflife?

Mod = modification. While Half-Life itself is a great game, what really makes it shine are all the user-made mods that add additional content to the game. The most notable is Counter-Strike, which is a total conversation free download that is just as good (if not better) than the commercial game.

A mod is a download that you can install that changes the look and feel of the game. Counter-strike and Team Fortress are two examples of mods. They don't affect the orginal game, they just add extra scenerios and more replay value.

Where do I find these mods for Half Life (if it's legal to say here)?

Mods are perfectly legal.

To find some, just search on any search engine for half-life mods. I did a quick google search and came up with this site really fast: halflife mods

For a P2 I would really agree with UT and if you want machine guns instead of laser guns then try Soldier of Fortune. Both of those are great for a P2.

If you dig atmosphere in your first person shooters, you'll probably enjoy Aliens Vs Predator 2. I've been playing that one quite a bit recently, and it's excellent. I also really like how you can play as either a Predator, Marine, or Alien; it adds a lot of replay value and variety to the game.

Also, as mentioned before, Deus Ex and Serious Sam come highly recommended. The funny thing is that, as excellent as both of those games are, they couldn't be any more different...

Well, they're both very good, regardless.

I'm not sure, but do you guys think that he can run Deus Ex, AvP2, Half-Life, etc., at a playable speed on a PII?

I think System Shock 2 is a great suggestion, though. Deus Ex, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and Jedi Knight 2 are great choices for computers that can handle them, too.

When Half-Life came out, P2 was a top-of-line PC. He could easily run it. I know this with certainty because he mentions that he's already played it in the first post.

Deus Ex should run fine. It's not a terribly impressive game from a technical standpoint.

A ha. Good eye. To be fair, he could've played it on someone else's computer.

No I've played Half Life on my P2 with no problems.

Aliens v. Predator, however (which looks really cool, BTW) runs really slow on my computer - you really need a P3.

Cliver Barker's Undying was also a pretty good game. It's on the UT engine, so the requirements aren't that hefty.

Try the first Aliens vs. Predator. I was able to play that on a 450mhz celeron.
