I win first bout with PS2 "Disc Read Error"

A couple days ago, I try to watch a DVD and I get a disc read error from my PS2. I say, whatever and put in another disc and watch that movie instead. Over the last few days, it had gotten much worse; it was only playing PS2 games and Warner Bros. DVDs. I picked up a DVD Lens Cleaner and put it in the PS2. To no surprise, I got another disc read error. I remove everything from my PS2 and vacuumed it out from the vents in front and the fan in back. I reinserted the DVD Lens Cleaner and after four tries, it finally worked and I got the lens cleaned. Now everything works perfect again.

Moral of the story: Buy a DVD Lens Cleaner for your PS2 or X-Box and run that thing through atleast once a month. It will save you tons of heart ache and work later down the line.

I always thought that lens cleaner thing was a joke....

So did I...at least those in the hardware forum lead me to believe that.

I don't see how it can work

laser beams get dusty. shine a laser beam in your house and see those little pieces of dust floating around in it... well your laser is dirty! Clean that bad boy up and give it a good polish too.

A good laser lens cleaner (like the one I use now) will have little brushes on it. The disc will have it read over the brushes and therefore, the brushes will knock the dust off the lens. I wasn't a firm believer in lens cleaners until I used it, now I will swear by them.

oh I didn't know they had lens cleaners that actually had brushes... the ones I've seen just look like CDs.

most of them look like regular cd's with brushes you usually can see to well unless you look.

They are always worth a try and I have cleaned a lot of my cd players with them with great success. :)

I've had my PS2 since December, 2000 and haven't cleaned it yet and haven't had any problems. Maybe I've just been lucky?

I was leary too until my DVD player went on the fritz a couple of weeks ago. It would freeze up on the menus. It wouldn't play the movie at all. I was ready to take it to get it fixed, but a buddy lent me his lens cleaner to try first. Now it runs perfect again. I'm sold.
