What's the First Sign that your XBOX is about to die?
I recently have been playing MADDEN 2003, and i've played the heck outta the game, but last night i got a Disc Dirty message. So i took it out, looked at it, and it looked fine. Then i started another game in my franchise, and i was almost finished, then the game gave me the same message. My XBOX is not that old, and i was just wondering if this is my laser crapping out on me, or just a fluke with the game. I didn't try anything else yet, since i was fed up after that.
Just curious of others stories of XBOX deaths |
When it starts singing the "Daisy" song.
|
When the fat lady next door starts to sing... well that could mean alot of things are dying tho.

I get the same dirty disc errors with enclave and sometimes with the XBOX LIVE. It's especially frustrating with ENCLAVE due to the lack of in-level save.
This seems to be a not-uncommon problem for XBOX systems. I don't know if it signals the death of you machine, but if it keeps up it may require a DVD drive replacement. Something that MS "generously" offers for $100. Unless you're still under warranty, then it's free. |

or when you boot up Splinter Cell and it looks like this:

seriously, I would not worry about your xbox dieing just yet.... I would try boiling your disc though. It certainly will not hurt anything and in most cases, it solves the problem. Boil 2~3 minutes label side up. Gonna have to rig up some way to hold it in the water though.... I used a spoon with the handle through the hole. Done it with 2 demo discs and the problems never came back. Sounds silly but it works :)

I thought you were only supposed to do it for 20 seconds? Has anyone tried it one a actual game (as opposed to a demo disc)?

I was having the same problems with mine for the few months. I finally got tired of it so I called Xbox support. They said this is a common problem. I gave them my serial number and they said it was still under warrenty. They sent me a box in the mail with airborne shipping pre-paid. I am waiting to get my box back after the tune-up soon.

Deleted. It'd be fun if we could joke around more in here, but people always seem to get bent out of shape at the smallest thing. - Static

Sorry but boiling your disc does nothing but get it wet. I tried this with Ghost Recon and it didn't fix anything. Whoever thought of that must have been smoking crack.
|
I would return my xbox right away if I were you.

Boiling discs work!

Well, it works fine again. I played 2 or 3 games of Madden last night.....must have been a fluke.

If you go to the XBOX forums on XBOX.com you'll find that there seem to be a fairly significant number of people experiencing problems like this. Supposedly they've had problems with the DVD drive in the initial run of XBOXs (rumor or fact I don't know).
The standard fix seems to be send it in to MS for a $100 DVD replacement, but there is also a large number of people who claim to get free fixes well after the warranty has run out. They also claim they didn't have the extended warranty. It is a web forum so who knows how much is real or made up (no offense to the fine folks here). :) |
Boiling works great but if its your console boiling that wont help.

Boiling the discs do help especially the OXM demo discs, but it's just a temporary fix. I sent mine off several weeks ago and MS gave me a refurb unit that has the new Philips DVDdrive in it, replacing the P.O.S. RCA DVDdrive.
I've been playing all the demo discs that wouldn't load before and I haven't got one dirty disc error even on LIVE since I got the new unit. Take it from me it's only gonna get worse, so you need to get it fixed asap. You'll save yourself a world of headache. P.S. Don't let them (MS) give you any crap about having to pay $100 for the repairs. I raised enough hell at them that the CS supervisor agreed to repair/replace it for $50. My stupidity for not getting the extended warrantee. |
