Anyone collect old consoles and games?
I've been looking at a lot of websites that sell old video game consoles and games and it's got me thinking about buying some of them. Anyone else do this?
|
I don't actually collect older games/consoles but I do buy for my older consoles. A good game is a good game no matter how old it is. I just recently was given a top-loading Nintendo and started playing those games again.
|
Same here, I don't collect used SNES or N64 Games, but I'm not getting rid of my old ones either.
Favorite old game: SNES - NHL97 Still have it! du du du du du du CHARGE! |
I've still got an NES and a SNES laying around, but neither have gotten much use in quite some time. I did however hook up the SNES a month or so ago so that I could play Super Metroid and Super Punchout and I was pleasantly surprised with how great the games still were. :)

I've been collecting classic consoles for about 7 years now. In my home theater room I have the following on the shelves, ready to be hooked up and played within minutes:
Odyssey 400 Pong Atari 2600 Atari 5200 Atari 7800 Intelevision I Intelevision II Sega Master System Super Nintendo Virtual Boy N64 I have hundreds of cartridges for these, especially the 2600. When I started collecting them, the games were real easy to get and very cheap... That is until Ebay and lots of new collectors came along and made them harder to get. I even play the games in widescreen! :) http://mywebpages.comcast.net/goblincat/photos/a1.jpg |

I don't really collect, but I have lots of old consoles and games. My favorite system is still the SNES and prized posession is Earthbound complete with oversized box, etc. You still can't beat Chronotrigger, and even though I have it on the PSX, you can't beat the feel of the SNES.
|
I stick to emulators. Many of them work so well you can't tell the difference other than the controllers, but then you don't need the storage space.
C'mon, Dreamcast can't count :p Sony still makes the PSone for crying out loud. Even SNES is a stretch. There were some people who run a classic gaming store at http://www.4jays.com/ on The Screensavers Monday. Now THOSE were old games! |
I used to collect alot of the older systems (and games). Like Atari 5200, 7800, 2600, XE, and even older/obscure like these:
Vectrex Intellivision Colecovision Odyssey 2 (I have 2 very cool deluxe games for this system, The Great Wall Street Fortune and a fantasy game complete with game board + many pieces) Fairchild TI-99 Supergrafx Of course the obligatory NES, SMS, 3DO, Jaguar/Jag CD, Turbografx 16 (TurboDuo), Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PSX, etc But since I have to relocate across country twice, I was forced to get rid of alot of things, so I only have the games I truly want and those that are cheap/not that great, I got rid of. |
I keep all my older systems and try to fill in the gaps over time. I make sure to keep at least 3 or 4 games for each system. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a Jaguar at the local game store for $20.
|
I still have an Intellivison system hooked up. I was playing Tron: Deadly Discs just the other day... Great game. The contollers are starting to crap out though... I always hated that stupid disc.
I also have an NES hooked up. Once in a while I'll throw in Tetris or Mike Tyson's Punchout. Not sure where to buy games for it... but I'm sure I'd still buy 'em they were easy to find. Old video games rule. |
I always pop in on these collection topics because of a site I like. It works like the game trade forum here, just more users. There are some pretty serious collector's over there. Anyway if you are interested in purchasing or trading for older systems head this way.

I had a larger collection of old consoles (including a Magnavox Oddessey), but sold them all in a fit of stupidity. I got 450 in store credit for them, so I bought a bunch of PS1 games and a couple movies. Worst....trade....ever. :(

I have an Atari 2600 and 7800 with a ton of cartridges and a Sega CD that I'm going to hook up in my bedroom. How do you hook all of these up to one TV? I have a switchbox with A/V inputs for my XB, GC, PS2 and Dreamcast, but IIRC the 2600 had a switchbox that you had to screw into the antenna inputs on the TV. Is there a way to hook them all up at once?

Atari on a widescreen... so cool and yet so wrong all at the same time :D
|
I don't really collect them but I rather hold on to them. I got rid of my SNES about 6-7 years ago and I had regretted that day until I picked one up this year. I learned my lesson about systems...hold onto them. I even sorta miss my TurboGraphx 16.
For the record I have 2 SNESes, Dreamcast, Playstation, GBA and GameCube. My most prized game is probably Mario RPG (SNES). |
I hold onto all my old systems and games, but I don't buy new games for them very often (although I recently bought the first Toejam and Earl).
I got into it late (when in grad school) so all I have is Genesis (w/CD), SNES, Playstation, N64 (worst one I ever had, just no games I cared for), Dreamcast, PS2, GBColor and GBA. My most prized game is probably either TJ & E or one of the Shining Force games. |

Originally posted by Dayewalker Thanks for that link! I saw that episode and I've been trying to remember what the link was since then. :) It was a pretty cool collection they brought on the show. It was the first time I have seen a Vectrex in action other than an emulator or a photo. I love the picture of Adventure on the widescreen :) I look forward to the day I have a front projector (waiting for my curren trear projector to die) so I can play Pitfall at 8 feet wide ;) |
