Question regarding semi-broken PS2.......

My step-sons PS2 will play audio cds but not games and dvd movies. I have had my PS2 for two years now but have not logged nearly as many hours as he has on his system and I am guessing it is one of the lasers since the audio cd works. If it was a matter where the lens needed a cleaning, I would think the audio cd would not work either. Any suggestions? His system will be in use for two years come spring and as stated previously, he has logged many hours in this time period. Thanks in advance!!! We have an Alamo Electronics store here in Cincinnati who I believe has a person that fixes these systems so a servicing would not be too much of a problem. :)

I helped 2 friends of mine that had the same problem back around the first of the year. There's 2 adjustment pots inside the unit. You have to take the console apart to find them, as they are very small. One is for the CD and one is for the DVD. They both look alike and I can't remember which one is the DVD though.

I got one of the consoles to work and is still working today but the other was too far gone to help.

I'll go look for the site and the thread that this was posted on. That's where I got good instructions on how to do it and I think pics were there also.

Edit: Ok I found 1 thread on this, I'll keep looking. http://pub49.ezboard.com/fthepsxwork...picID=94.topic

Thanks alot WOWZY...if it was mine I would open it up in a heartbeat as I have with other electronics but he is concerned about further damaging the unit so we will probably take it somewhere and see how much the fix will be....he may just need to buy a new one if it is going to be too expensive. I thought I had read awhile back about people having laser problems?? I believe as with the Sony dvd players.....doesn't the PS2 have dual laser pick-up? :)

My Xbox gets an occasional disc read error and sometimes gets the Code 21 error. I've called Xbox and bitched about it to see if they would replace it with a refurb but they said no. After bitching with them for a good while they agreed to fix it for $40 (instead of the usual $100) and replace the RCA dvd with the new Phillips one that they're putting in the newer ones.

You could call sony and see if they feel generous enough to replace your console.

I may try that.....definitely cannot hurt. :)

Have not called Sony yet but did look at their website......WOW...they are real generous with fixing broken machines. No matter what the problem is, one would have to spend $100+ dollars depending on sales tax which does not include shipping the PS2 to the service center. -rolleyes-

You would think they would be more concerned about keeping people happy and not gouging them to fix a product which should not have broken down after 1 1/2 years. :(

Give them a call. It's a known problem that some of the earlier units stopped reading cds or dvds and Sony has been fixing them for free for a while now.
