best PS2 games by genre
 

i'm not looking to start an argument, just get some recommendations.

i just ordered a PS2 (finally) and i'm trying to sort out which games to pick up first. so far i'm going with what i've heard of, but am hoping some of the more experienced people here can give me some remommendations in each genre.

bear in mind that i've played none of these...just going by reputation.

Is Wild Arms 3 out for the PS2? Also, what about Grandia X? I heard the Grandia series was good and had a great battle system. I love anime-ish RPGs.

I just like games so I guess if Baldur's Gate is not a RPG then still get it just call it whatever you want :)

Dark Cloud is a nice game IMO. It is also 19.99 at best buy then minus $5 using those GC coupons and I think it is worth $14.99.

I liked Wild Arms and the reviews seem to say that WA3 is a good game also.

That is why best is so tough.

for me Halo would not be a best game since i generally do not play FPS. However it is a great game.

What is best to me might stink to others :)


I guess that is why I post those games I like and then a person can read about them and decide if it looks like one he/she will like also :)

I guess the only game most would agree on liking is GTA3. running around killing people, stealing,... what a game :D

uh...guys...you've derailed my thread. i don't even like RPGs all that much. just don't have the time to invest.

i'm just looking for opinions on genre defining games here. i'd hate to buy a game and find out there's a better one that i should start with in the same genre.

Both are very good...Jak and Daxter will take you a while longer than Sly Cooper

Are you looking for hardcore simulation or just a fun driving experience. That is the difference between GT3 and NFS. GT3 is not as hardcore as its forebearers, but there is a lot of adaptability on the cars you can do (downforce, tire traction, etc.). NFS has a little of this, but is just a fun driving game.

I would still argue this is the best RPG. You have said you are not too interested in this, so I will not get into it. Arguably this and Kingdom Hearts are all you have to choose from for great RPGs (IMO)

Not into them

I would put Devil May Cry in this. It is much more Action that Adventure. I highly recommend DMC even though I know many do not like it.

GTA3 and GTA: Vice City (coming next week) are generally liked (I hated the first two GTA games...loved the 3rd).

Both games are good, even though many do not like MGS2 because of its weight on the cinematic scale. MGS2 would be your landmark game in the Action/Adventure genre given the ability to do pretty much anything you want when you get to play in the game.

I also want to recommend Ico. The game is short, but the game is beautiful and extremely innovative. I certainly hope this team's next game is the sequel to Ico, although that has not been confirmed. If you have ever played Out of this World, Flashback or Fade to Black on the PC (or other platforms), this game will feel somewhat familiar...I still think it is a spiritual successor to these great games (with better graphics of course). Ico is a landmark title and one of the best games ever made for PS2 even though it is so short.

TMB is hella hard, be weary of this game. It is an excellent game, it is just very hard. Wipeout Fusion is another excellent one to pick up and I would say it is better than TMB.

Timesplitters 2, Hitman 2, Agent Under Fire, the upcoming 007: Nightfire, etc. are all really good FPS games. If you are used to PC FPSs you will probably dislike these games

Ace Combat 04 is a not a flight sim it's flight shooting, don't go in thinking its a hard core sim as you wont find one here. Reagrdless of the category it's one of the best PS2 games I've played. I would highly reccomend this over getting Robotech.
