I'm thinking of picking up a cheap Virtual Boy

As the subject says, I'm thinking about picking up a cheap Virtual Boy, just for curiosity's sake, because I never tried one when they came out. Is it that bad of a system? Does it have any redeeming values? If so, what are the games I should try to find?

What's a virtual boy?

It's not terrible. At the time, the graphics were fairly decent. They're likely outdated now. Don't be fooled by the name, this thing isn't really portable at all. Whenever I played it, I had to prop the stand up on a table. Another drawback is the fact that everything is red and black. Staring at all that red for extended periods of time can do things to a man.

I bought mine for pretty cheap when Blockbuster was getting rid of all the units they rented out. I sold mine to my little cousin with a month or two. For curiosity's sake, it might be worth looking at but I wouldn't pay too much for it.

I bought mine brand new for 30 bucks at EB and currently have picked up almost every game, including japanese ones for abut 5-10 bucks each. Some of the games are really good, some arn't. It is a great novelty item and is fun.

The reason the VB sunk so badly was because what it offered new to games was hard to sell and even harder to implement. Most of the games offered just used the 3d as a gimmick and failed to incorporate it into gameplay.

I think I'll get mine out the next time I'm home. :)

I had a VB back in the day...gave me headaches!

I want one for collection purposes. Maybe this year I'll get one for Christmas.

That thing would have been so cool if it wasn't for two things: the headache caused by the colors, the neckache caused by sitting there looking into the damn thing for extended periods of time. Someday I'll get one just to have one, but I'm in no rush. I remember seeing them years ago at KB for I think $14.99 when they were being phased out.

I've got one at EB when they were blowing them out real cheap. I like to break it out and play it about once per year or so. Just remember to take frequent breaks while playing, as it can be rough on the eyes after a while.

I can't look at the thing for more than 5 minutes, there is a reason why they chose RED as the only color (least hurtful to your eye).... The games are OKAY (at best), some of the effects are very good tho. It looks cool by itself b/c it is like an art piece so if it is cheap, it might be worth it anyway as a modern day digital/electronic scrupture! ;)

My freind had one of these but he didnt use the stand,he rigged it up to where he could place it on his face/head like a hat so he could play with ease and no headachs,he looked like a goof playing it but at least he was comfortable.
