Hey Old-Schoolers, Ever see one of These:

The company I work for has this on file. Pretty old I'd imagine because Ive never seen this system before. I can look up more info about it but I thought I'd ask you guys first.

What the hell kind of contraption ate that poor TurboGrafx system?

Where's BONK when you need him? God, I loved Bonk. The only video game who's sole amusement was to watch your character repeatedly brain himself.

kvrdave 10-09-02 03:46 PM

I have one :D Not in the display, but still in the original box.

mtucker 10-09-02 03:46 PM

yes

Edit: I have one as well, not in its original box however. NEC Turbografx 16. Wasn't it called the PCEngine overseas?

Save Ferris 10-09-02 03:50 PM

ive never seen it! Does it play Nintendo games? BTW, i think i can get my hands on this whole unit. I wonder if any nostalgic enthusiasts would want it. Or the games at least. I just LOVE those controllers!

kvrdave 10-09-02 03:53 PM

Isn't this technically the first 16 bit system?

Built-in variable rapid fire is the best! And no, it doesn't play Nintendo games. It plays Turbografx games which came on little credit card sized cards I think. Although there was a CD attachment released later I believe.

Yeah... I believe it was. I never had one myself... I was strictly a Genesis and SNES guy. A friend of mine had one though. There was also a portable system wasn't there?

Edit: Portable unit was called the TurboGrafx Express.

There were some great games available for the TurboGrafx... if you can pick one up, you're in for a treat! :D You just have to find some games.

Splatterhouse, Bonk's Adventure and Legendary Axe were pretty damn good.

DVDKrayzie 10-09-02 04:03 PM

it wasn't really a 16-bit system, more like a double 8-bit If i remember correctly. kind of like the Jaguar

AgtFox 10-09-02 04:04 PM

Yes, Turbografx was known as PC Engine in Japan. It also had two of the greatest games ever made for it: Ys Book 1 and 2 (RPG) and Dracula X: Rolando of Blood (came over here as Castlevania X on SNES, was not as good...this is in the Castlevania series). Both are CD-based though and Dracula X was Japan only.

SpaceBoy 10-09-02 04:24 PM

H@ll yeah, I had one of those. (minus that crappy stand)

I agree, the built in turbo buttons was sweet, as well as those games, being like a pcmci card practically.

Bonk ruled, as well as Splatterhouse, Golden Axe etc..

Man wish I still had mine :(

cowboy 10-09-02 04:28 PM

tg16 had so many fun games. ninja spirit, dragon spirit, bonk, bloody wolf, y's 2 & 3, the original street fighter.

I wish I kept mine, but I sold it to buy a snowboard.

KrackerBox 10-09-02 05:18 PM

wow do i feel old... never heard of this system?! How is this possilbe? I can't be THAT old. wow... better go drink my warm milk.

greatjedi 10-09-02 06:30 PM

Whoa. I'd forgotten all about that thing. My brother's friend had one that he'd bring over to our house all of the time. That was at least ten years ago.

Ralph Wiggum 10-09-02 06:43 PM

A buddy of mine used to have a Turbo Grafx 16 and a Turbo Express with the TV Tuner.

Does anyone else remember those kiosks in Toys R Us? I played that Zonk shooter game every time I went.

Trigger 10-09-02 06:49 PM

Geez - this wasn't that long ago... c'mon...

Aghama 10-09-02 06:49 PM

The tennis game where you played against Satan was pretty cool.

Abranut 10-09-02 06:58 PM

There was a ninja game for TurboGrafx that was pretty sweet. Was it called Ninja Fury?

And of course, Splatterhouse and Bonk's Adventure were classic.

joeblow69 10-09-02 07:02 PM

Whoa, that's a blast from the past! TurboGrafix 16 was home of my very favorite space shooter of all time: Blazing Lasers! Man, that game was awesome! Once your lasers were fully upgraded, they zig-zagged all over the place covering the entire screen, laying waste to any unfortunate enemies that happen to be in the way.

Trigger 10-09-02 07:04 PM

Turbografix came out in 89 - the same year the Sega Genesis came out. The Genesis was a 16-bit system as well. Neo-Geo in 90, CD-I and Super Nintendo in 91, and 3DO and Atari Jaguar in 93. This is all like just a decade ago or so... not really that long ago considering the Atari 2600 came out 25 years ago, and the Magnavox Odyssey came out over 30 years ago.

mljones99 10-09-02 07:17 PM

I am the proud owner of a TurboGraphix 16 since day 1. I had Bonk's Adventure and Keith Courage: Adventure in Alpha Zone or whatever it was called. I have lost my games due to the fact they are the size of a credit card and get lost easily. But I still have the system and controller.

Chris_D 10-09-02 08:39 PM

I have TGCD ys books 1+2 which I play on my pc. Never had the system though.

Chris

Jackskeleton 10-09-02 09:14 PM

wow chris, I made your sig. :p though I have no memory of when I used it..
