Microsoft Looking To Purchase Capcom... The Rumor

Note - keep this one on topic. If you're not posting about Capcom or Microsoft, then take it elsewhere.

It looks like this rumor is in full steam. Apparently, it's not entirely a rumor. Here's an article from Computerandvideogames.com

MICROSOFT EYES ASIA AS CAPCOM SKIRTS RUMOURS

Capcom comments on rumours that the company is in high level talks with Microsoft regarding a buyout as Xbox spreads across the Far East

13:27 Capcom has today reacted to rumours that the company is currently in negotiations with Microsoft regarding possibly selling the company.
While the statement says little specifically about the matter, it does address the possible source of the rumour: Capcom's financial results this year point to a significant loss.

"Capcom has made some financial adjustments in Japan that could cause the group to declare a loss in this fiscal year," said a spokesperson for Capcom Europe. "The adjustments relate to extraordinary items related to real estate. This does not reflect any downturn in the performance of the general business of the software development and sales operations."

UK insiders today have claimed that talks have definitely taken place between the two parties, while pointing out that Sega is now almost certainly off limits to Microsoft due to the cost of a sale.

Sega was long-rumoured to be the favoured Japanese target for the American giant, although the Sonic manufacturer is on the verge of spinning money for the first time since the beginning of the financially dire Dreamcast days. If you thought Rare was expensive at £240 million, think again: Sega's assets alone are worth at least $2 billion (£1.3 billion), then you have staff costs, properties and Yu Suzuki's legendary expenses account. "Let's spend some kerazy money!" Bill Gates probably didn't shout recently.

According to those in the know, Microsoft, desperate for credibility in the Far East, is now fighting tooth and nail to make a Japanese acquisition, so if nothing comes of the Capcom talks you can still expect an announcement of some kind in the not too distant future. The hallowed name of Konami has even been thrown around today.

Keep your eyes peeled for more info as Microsoft begins, slowly but surely, to assimilate the world videogames industry. Resistance is futile...

Rumor: Microsoft To Buy Capcom

Capcom had earlier announced a profit of 3.8 billion ($31 million) yen for the end of the fiscal year, March 2003. Those projected numbers have now turned sour and Capcom has announced recently that they now expect to lose a ridiculous 12.7 billion yen ($103 million). They have been making scaling back efforts through the year.

This is bad news altogether, but even worse as it makes it much more possible for the company to allow themselves to be bought out. Rumors are continuing to go around that a company like Nintendo will try to buy them. If we were only that lucky. According to the latest rumors, Microsoft has headed to Japan to talk to Capcom with intentions of buying the company. Neither Capcom nor Microsoft has given any word on this, but as with Rareware it would be announced once stock transfer occurs.

Capcom has been arguably giving Microsoft the short end of the stick, with few Xbox games, and just two being planned. Thus there is reason for Microsoft to be even more interested in buying Capcom. The huge debt Capcom has accumulated will weaken any arguments they have against being bought. This rumor seems to have been started right after the bad financial status was announced.

Microsoft, desperate for credibility in the Far East
Is this really true? How much does MS really care about the Japanese market?

Well, they're about to release in Korea as well. I think they probably care a great deal because they are lagging behind in Japan which is a huge market. Plus - they spent a bunch of money already over there and haven't seen a return on it. All they need to do is get the ball rolling in time for the Xbox 2 so it can have a chance there. As it stands now, I don't think an Xbox 2 would do even as well as this one is doing over there.

Microsoft is scrapping to collect all the software power to take down some of PS2 ships and GC ships! It's aggressive! But hell it's a tough market. Take off the gloves and throw some punches errr I mean Cash!

Rare is a big hit to Nintendo ...they don't see it that way.... but Rare had that Nintendo 1st party feel. That's going to do alot to the XBOX with adding a Nintendo type of flavor to their line up.

Capcom might be a big hit to SONY. Hell SONY does need to take one some water! I guess this will also hurt Nintendo with the RE series! All I can say is that XBOX is beginning aggressive and they need to be! Hell SONY is aggressive too!

Wasn't there a rumor about Sega as well? I see SEGA as a key buy!

Remembers rumors are rumors....lets give it some time.

I'm sure there are all sorts of nifty clauses in Nintendo's contract with Capcom that would involve lots of money exchanging hands if one of them backs out.

It would be, but that's more or less squashed. "Sega's assets alone are worth at least $2 billion "

Get Me Coffee 09-30-02 12:05 PM

If MS wants to buy a Japanese company they should put their target on SEGA!

Groucho 09-30-02 12:07 PM

I imagine that if anything does come of this (and I don't see sufficient enough proof to think that it will), Capcom will give Sony and Nintendo a chance to counter-offer.

Microsoft tried (and failed) to buy both Sega and Nintendo.

I really hope this comes to be. I've been enjoying my X-Box more and more lately, giving it more time than even my PS2 as of late! I would love to see MS buy Capcom for the following reasons:

1) Resident Evil 4\5 should be scarier than the rest of the series with better graphics, DD 5.1 sound, and maybe even a moving camera.

2) Capcom fighting games + X-Box live.

3) Devil May Cry 3 with DD 5.1 (maybe even on X-Box live?).

4) Dino Crisis 3 with DD 5.1 and X-Box live capabilities.

5) Every other Capcom franchise looking better than ever, with DD 5.1 sound, and X-Box live capabilitites! Maybe I should have just made this the one blanket statement :).

6) I could sell my Gamecube since my reason for keeping it (new Resident Evil games) would no longer be in effect!

The only downside I can immediately think of is that I probably won't get any more 2D Mega Man action on my Game Boy Advance :(.

kegman 09-30-02 12:38 PM

I hope MS buys Capcom. I would love to see the graphics on a Resident evil game on the Xbox.

Why? I thought microsoft was going to release some games for GBA.

Trigger 09-30-02 12:45 PM

Maybe Microsoft will release their own handheld device too. :)

mljones99 09-30-02 12:47 PM

I really hope this doesn't happen.

Thrillhouse 09-30-02 01:47 PM

I am getting really sick of MS trying to buy there way into our homes.

Yes, the size of a laptop from the 1980's. :)
If this deal goes through, I'm calling it quits with consoles. I've already spent about $1000 just on the PS2 and GC, and Capcom games are the staple of my collection. I'm not buying yet another console, and I'm not getting rid of any either. I've felt for a long time it's ridiculous that Sony already announced a PS3 and M$ the XBox 2, and if my favorite games go to yet another console(the original reason I bought my GC), then I'm just going to be missing out on it all....for good.

I think the only reason MS announced the Xbox 2 is so Xbox owners would know that there in it for the long haul.

Disgusting...

zig 09-30-02 03:37 PM

Capcom is saying that they're not really in major financial trouble(although they do expect a loss), and the gaming side of business is still doing well.. and they're not considering a Microsoft sell-out.

at least.. according to this site:

http://www.n-philes.com/php/epffuezaaaevyfepafkk.php

I don't know where they got it though.

edit: never mind.. they got it from some crappy amateur-ish site.

As long as 2-d fighters are still made, I'll be happy. :)

The only way to be competitive against a company like Sony is to be aggressive, business is war and you take whatever advantage you can.

I am tired of getting x-box games that are watered down because they were designed for PS2 and have inferior graphics to games made with the x-box in mind.
