How to Direct Connect for network gaming??

Howdy all,

I'm trying to play a game with my roommate using a direct connect between our computers. He's running Windows XP and I've got 2000.
Both of our computers are connected to road runner through a router with ethernet cables, and have been able to do some file sharing with this setup, but why not playing a game with each other?

The game says a Null Modem Cable is needed. I believe this is a serial cable like used to connect to your printer? The computers are about 30 or 40 feet apart, so I could buy a really long cable.
Isn't it possible to use a male to male USB cable? Or is some sort of software needed in addition?

I found this product... but I feel like there should be an easier way.

Belkin - USB Direct Connect

Thanks for any ideas!

Is the game a Network playable game? Many games that play in Null Modem can't use a network. A nullmodem cable is a serial cable that is crossed over like a crossover Ethernet. RadioShack has them cheap.
