war craft II, can i play over cable modem
 

i have an old copy of warcraft II lying around, and i was wondering if i will be able to play my buddy over our cable modems....we both have at&t cable internet and we both have routers with built in firewalls running into our boxes. will we need to open a port on the router? will the game wc II allow a cable connection? i wanted to ask on here first. thanks. dave

I bought the Battle.net version for about 10 bucks. I guarantee you that'll do her.

Long answer: yes, with an if

Short answer: no, with an unless

Basically, IIRC, the old WCII network play relied on IPX network protocols which is a Novell protocol which is restricted to LANs. You'd have to set up some kind of way to tunnel IPX through the internet. While there are definitely tools and products that can do this, configuring them and getting them working can require a fair amount of expertise.

You would be much better off trying to find an old version of the Battle.net edition of WCII.

Is Kali still up? That's how I remember reveryone used to play WCII online, but I doubt that it's still running.

Is there a patch to upgrade the original version of Warcraft 2 to the Battle.net version? I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask just in case.
