Anyone get this mod chip yet how does it work?

Anyone got a link to the GCN mod chips and PS2 mod chips?

I'm not sure that discussion on how to get mod chips is allowed, as piracy is a major benifit of them.

I've talked to Static Cling and Namja about this and they decided there are benefits to these chips aside from pirating and they can be discussed.

Cool. I wasn't sure. Especially after Geoff banned all discussion of bootlegs in DVD Talk.

Ok now that this is a legal topic anyone get this chip yet or heardof any reviews on it?

The Region X CD should do the same thing for much cheaper though.

Installing this also allows you to play MAME on the XBOX. 200 for a MAME machine....hrmm :D

I'd bet that 95% of the people who get mod chips get it to play bootlegs. Whatever the reason, from what I've been reading on the internet is that the chip works, but it sounds kind of difficult to solder. Then again I've never soldered anything in my life so maybe its easy. This store seems kind of expensive they're charging $40 for Afterburner's and $25 for controller convertors.

It's a MAME Box, at least I'm guessing since he talks about using the Xbox as a MAME Box.

Nope. That is a computer, just a very small computer. Basically they made it for LAN parties, but I like the smallness of it, so I'm gonna run one as a MAME box in my game room. Just like this guy has in his room, except he uses it for DIVX and DVD output :

Installed specifically on that machine? Nope. You have to download it, then install it yourself, and have the plethora of roms to play it.

Also, it wouldn't be legal to sell that with it installed I believe. Copyright infringement and all.

True true. But I imagine you'll be doing it yourself for that box?

I will be installing MAME, along with a ton of other stuff i.e. SOF 2, Jedi Knight 2, etc etc etc. Basically a gaming machine, nothing else.

right, but is that available for us consoles yet? I heard about in the uk just not here.

if the region x cd doesn't come out here i might spring for the mod. so i can have a region free pal converting dvd player. oh yeah and it plays games too!

All I want is to play region 2 DVDs (hopefully there will be a disc that allows this) and I agree that this chip is going to be used by 95% of the people to play backups. All the Xbox needs is piracy to drag down its profits. I watched someone at Comp USA yesterday get a DVD burner and he pretty much admited he was getting it to play illegal PS2 and Xbox games. The "I'm just going to use a mod chip to backup my games" excuse is weak. I own about 400 video games on CD or DVD and I've yet to scratch one to the point where I would need another copy.

Piracy sucks. Its a reason those of us that actually pay for our games have to pay $50 for them. I hope Microsoft finds a way to defeat these chips. Maybe they can add something to the games that installs on the harddrive and finds the chip and shuts down the use of it.

That's a great idea I hope they manage to do that too. I know PSX stopped pirating a little toward the end of its existence, I hope Xbox can learn to do it quicker more effectively.

Yeah I think it does? Or at least you have to solder something into it? It allows you to play Japanese games.

Have any kids? My 17 month old finds a way into everything. I've got all my games on my top shelf yet somehow she managed a way to get one down the other day. What may be weak to you, may not be to someone else.

They offer installation services to for those hard to solder chips.

They will be getting the PhoenixLE for the PS2 and the Messiah-X for the X-Box.

I just wish there was a hack or something that would allow you to see the XBox hard drive over the home network. I'd like to be able to transfer music files (that I've already ripped and named) to the XBox's hard drive and maybe swap save games over the internet.

This seems to be a legitimate use that the XBox could have offered that none of the other consoles could have.
