Tired of "unplayable" rentals!!
I don't know about anyone else but I'm sick of going to my local video store and renting games that are scratched beyond recognition. I rented Batman Vegance tonight (regardless of what you think of the game I'm trying to make a point here) and I got so many skips and disc read errors that I finally gave up on it. I feel like I'm just flushing money down the toilet.
Not only that but alot of people have been stealing PS2 games outright from this store. Is this just me or does anyone else get tired of this too? Okay I ranted. Now I feel better. :whofart: |
If you're concerned, why not ask to look at the discs before you accept the rental?
One time I had a PS1 rental disc that was skipping, and it was because there was a lot of fingerprints on the bottom. Cleaned it off, good as new! |
I have worked at both Hollywood Video and Blockbuster, and they SHOULD replace them or give a free rental of another title if the game is unplayable. Sure, it sucks to go back, but frankly, you can not expect any less with videogame rentals. It sucks that renters do not take good care of them, but sadly they don't and stores can not afford to replace the scratched ones.

$6 a rental and they can't afford to replace them?

eek! That sounds not fun :(. Thats happened to me before with a rental game though. As hard as I tried it would not load (It was a PSX game a long time ago I can't remember which one but I do remember wanting to play it bad). I called them up about 15 minutes after I got back and explained the situation that it wouldn't play in my system and they exchanged it for another one. If they don't have any more of that game then I'm not sure what they'd do, it probably depends on the store.
You should call them and explain the situation, I think if you can't get the game to work or play right on your system they should exchange it or at least give you store credit. I know stores like Blockbuster are pretty stingy when it comes to these kinds of things so YMMV. The scratching hasn't been too big of a problem in my area, but I usually try to rent games when they are new to avoid errors. Never heard of stealing being a problemthough but if its happening then that really sucks too :( |
There was a thread on the IGN board yesterday that just amazed me. I know, I should be surprised with the juvenile crap that gets posted there, but the question was "do you take care of rental games?".
I couldn't believe that the majority of the replies were along the lines of "no way! I abuse 'em!". There were several references to flinging the disc across the room when the game gets frustrating. "It's not my game, why should I take care of it?". It was obvious that most of these morons go the extra mile to make sure that they return games in horrible shape. Probably the same kids who get mommy and daddy to complain to the store because the game they rented doesn't work. |
The problem is that the Video Stores don't check the discs when they get returned. DVDs and CDs are just the same a video cassette. If the video cassette is damaged then the renter has to replace it. The same should go for rental CDs and DVDs. Normal wear is understandable, but if the games were checked or if a Major scratch was apparent then the renter should be responsible for fixing/replacing the game.

It amazes me to see so many rental DVD disks with scratches, finger prints, dust, crumbs, etc. When I take a look at a disk in my collection, it is almost always clean and immaculate.

Blockbuster video games are crap. I buy a lot of used games, but the few times I've taken the risk in buying one there, I've been screwed. Best part is they won't take it back for a refund. Luckily I don't bite unless its really cheap, so I can at least rent a movie or something for my 3-10 dollars.
I've never tried other rental places, but I usually stick to video game stores for my used games. Never had a problem with gamestop/electronics boutique that wasn't solved immediately. Why does Blockbuster put those stupid stickers on anyway? Does it really prevent anything? |
