If I didn't have broadband, it would take several hours to download the single player demo of Jedi Knight 2 or Soldier of Fortune 2. Instead, it takes 15 minutes.

If I didn't have broadband, I wouldn't be watching Triumph the Insult Dog insulting people in line to see Star Wars or watching clips of SNL's celebrity Jeopardy.

If I didn't have broadband, I wouldn't have 6 gig of mp3's on my harddrive.

If I didn't have broadband, I wouldn't be able to snipe the 56Kers on Ebay.

If I didn't have broadband, I would still be waiting for DVDTalk to load up instead of typing this right now.

Online gaming is just one of several reasons to have broadband. Don't assign every dollar of a monthly broadband bill to online gaming. That's just silly.

Wow, that's just about all the same reasons I have broadband. Especially the Triumph the Insult Dog clips.

If we're only seeing online modes in games, then online gaming will still be a niche market thing.

If online gaming becomes a huge success, I fear that in 3 or 4 generations we'll see more and more online only games like Final Fantasy XI.

I don't see that happening, but if that did, that's when I'd give up gaming.

It'll never be all MMPORGS or whatever the acronym is. Never.

How can you be so confident as to say that online modes in games will never be more than a niche market thing? What proof do you have?

I meant that if all that we get is online modes added into games with strong single player modes, then online gaming as a whole is only a niche market.

If it was a huge market, we would see tons of online only games to take advantage of it, rather than just adding online modes to games as a bonus for the smaller market that plays online.

Well no one can predict the future, but we can look at PC game sales to see how online games compare to non-online games.

Top Selling PC games of 2001:
1 - The Sims - Electronic Arts
2 - RollerCoaster Tycoon - Infogrames
3 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Electronic Arts
4 - Diablo II: Lord of Destruction - Vivendi Universal
5 - The Sims: House Party - Electronic Arts
6 - The Sims: Livin' Large - Electronic Arts
7 - The Sims: Hot Date - Electronic Arts
8 - Diablo II - Vivendi Universal
9 - SimTheme Park - Electronic Arts
10 - Age of Empires II: Age of Kings - Microsoft
11 - Black & White - Electronic Arts
12 - Frogger - Infogrames
13 - Roller Coaster Tycoon: Loopy Landscapes - Infogrames
14 - Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 - Electronic Arts
15 - Backyard Basketball - Infogrames
16 - SimCity 3000 Unlimited - Electronic Arts
17 - Backyard Baseball 2001 - Infogrames
18 - Age of Empires II: The Conquerors - Microsoft
19 - Max Payne - GodGames
20 - SimCity 3000 - Electronic Arts

As you can see, even in the PC market where online gaming is everywhere, the majority of the top sellers are NON-online games.

Funny you should mention The Sims as its next incarnation is an online version. :)

Point taken however!

It will be interesting to see if the online version of the Sims sells as well as the previous installments. It is to be online only right?

I take it that Phantasy star online is still coming to the GCN?

Yup and the Xbox too although I think they are going to be different versions.

I just (personally) have no desire to play against people I can't see.

Why not?

Human opponents are far superior to computer opponents!!!

Medal of Honor: Alied Assault online is just amazing! Age of Kings... Unreal Tornament, Command and Conquer, Crimson Skies, Diablo II, etc...

All good single player games that are even better when played with people online!!!

Yep. It's even better when they're sitting right next to you though.

Yep, it's even better when you are playing online with your friends sitting right next to you playing along too.

Several reasons, actually. First I have 3 kids and a business to run, I don't have the time to invest to get to a point where I can compete at a level that I've seen some people play. I've seen people play Halo that would destroy me within seconds. I also tend to play games like Zelda, Pikmin, Sonic, Mario World and Banjo Kazooie, those don't lend themselves to online play.

I am a big Final Fantasy fan though so I'd be interested to see what they've done with Final Fantasy XI. I'm sure as things progress, and more games become online enabled, I'll be more interested in online play but right now there is nothing compelling out there.
