DSL vs Cable for XBox?

With VOIP will the upload/download difference between DSL and Cable be noticable?

Gallant Pig 06-05-02 06:09 PM

VOIP?

The mic, MSs stubborn refusal to give us a keyboard/mouse. Cable limits your upload speed where DSL doesnt. Just wondering if it will make any difference at all.

I imagine you have have an upstream of 128 kbs or higher you'll be fine. Most that I've seen are like 250kbs or so.

VOIP == Voice Over IP

Back when I was looking into DSL and cable connections, I read that DSL would give you 128kb/s upload while cable would only give you 64kb/s (unless, of course, you have mucho expensive SDSL). Has that changed, or was it even accurate in the first place? If that's true, I would think DSL would be better, since you probably wouldn't even need the theoretically higher speed of cable downloads for online gameplay anyway.

Definitely changed. Cable has become less asynchronous, they have developed it so that it has a stronger upstream. Not as strong as DSL, but most of the time DSL throttles their upstream bandwidth anyway.

DSL sucks. Don't even think about getting DSL. You will be sorry if you do.

We had both Cable and DSL here for a while (2-3 months) to compare them both, and we ended up sticking with DSL.

Part of the reason is that we get a discount as we work at SBC/Ameritech, the other reason being that it was actually a little bit faster for us.

This all depends on your location and setup, as DSL will vary, as will cable depending on how many people use it in your area.

Overall DSL was faster, but has more dropped connections if we arent using the connection. (Keeping AIM on all day usually helps..)

I have Roadrunner Cable and my neighbor has DSL. We play Ultima Online together and when we're playing and talking on the phone, he has about a 1-2 second delay on anything happening in the game.

My download speeds average 2.5-4.2Mb per second and my upload speeds always stay above 300Kb per second. His DSL is no where near that fast.

Cable is the way to go.

Here's a good site that lists alot of speed test site's:

Once again, it dependson your location for DSL.

The closer you are, the faster it goes. We ran DL and UL tests on our home LAN and DSL was faster. If you want the best, buy both for a month and download the software from Cnet to test which is faster yourself.

really it depends on much more than just location. Some cable companies are making you pay more for extra bandwidth. Here in Mesa, AZ I have cox and it is great. I get an Avg of 3 Mbps down and 250-350 up. It is very fast and very reliable. I would try to find some neighbors who have each and ask them. They will be able to tell you better or even show you. :)
