Most of the games people say you should buy a GC for aren't even out yet (and won't be out for a good few months) so why waste your money now when you might be able to cash in on another price drop later? In the meantime keep an eye out for 2nd hand units, you might see a bargain.

The 'Cube has all the sports games that the PS2 does... Maybe a few extras too. The only drawback to using the Cube as a sports console is the awkward controller layout.

With the weakest online plan and that petite memory card its never gonna carry a sports title like the Box or PS2. It wont be getting Inside Drive either which has unseated NBA2kX for me. The Box is a sports gamers wet dream. Save all the replays and seasons you want on that fat HD.

Nintendo has a bigger memory card coming out this month or next. As for NBA Drive, well, I haven't played it. I'm pretty sure the 2K series is still considered the big dog though. As far as the internet is concerned, I think that's less of an issue with sports games. A lot of people quit when they're losing and that sucks if you're the one winning.

The Box is a sports gamers wet dream.
Didn't EA, the king of all games sports and otherwise, say they didn't like M$'s internet plan?

Big deal. On XBox Live, any default will count as a win for your online ranking and stats.

If they quit on me, I will still win.

Yes, be they are still in negotiations. Just because they don't like it doesn't mean they want Sega and Microsoft to have an advantage over EA games on the XBox.

Also keep in mind that third party support for gamecube has been weaker than with PS2.

I'm not trying to console bash, but i have a freind right now who's kinda dissatisfied with his 'cube purchase. The good games are few and FAR between. The only games he's enjoyed on Cube are the ports from PS2 (madden, nba street, baseball)

For only 50$ more i think PS2 is the way to go. (You'll make up that 50 bucks on memory cards alone)

EDIT TO ADD:

A: Greatest hits... 19.99
B: New 39.99 Price on all PS2 games according to IGN. 10$ cheaper than 'Cube.

$0.02

You sound like you're already in line for the 'Cube... So enjoy.
hmmmm...that's what i was looking for...

my problem is that i picked up an N64 last x-mas for peanuts and mario/zelda just blew me away...

but there are games i'd miss on PS2 as well...GTA3, GT3, TMB, FF....

i know i'll eventually get both, the question is which to buy first...since most of the games i want to play NOW are on PS2, i'll probably go that way.

thanks for the input everybody!

By the end of the year the Gamecube will have too many good games. You will have to buy them all. This will take money away from your porno fund.

Thats the thing, these consoles aren't going anywhere. If the games you want to play now are on the PS2, then get the PS2 and get the GC later. Or, you can just delay playing the games on the PS2 and you can just pick up a PS3 and play them then. If it were me, I would look at the game out there and the games soon to come out, and decide which console suited my taste best. You are always going to have to sacrifice games because of your choices, just decide which is less of a sacrifice.

I beg to differ. The GC has no boxing, golf, hockey (I don't count "Hitz"), or NASCAR game. EA releases most of its sports games on PS2, XBox gets about half of those titles, and GC gets a few of them. The PS2 is the only system with the NCAA games also. Sega, while also releasing less games like EA, seems to think GC gamers don't want realistic sports sims ("Home Run King," "Soccer Slam"). Also, Nintendo doesn't do as many sports games as Sony and Microsoft does.

Of course, I'm only comparing how the consoles do in traditional sports, not "extreme sports" like Tony Hawk and such (that's a whole other story, and again PS2 has the most).

I could be wrong but I think the Cube is getting the full slate of sports games in the future. I definitely know there's a couple college games on the way.

You are absolutely correct... It's getting more EA games than the X-Box is, period.

Well, the XBox already has 3 more sports titles from EA than the Gamecube. Also, I'm pretty sure future titles are close the same. The XBox has these EA titles coming out this year:

Madden 2003
NBA Live 2003
NCAA Football 2003
NHL 2003
Nascar Thunder 2003
Tiger Woods 2003

What EA titles will the Gamecube have that the XBox won't?

Out of what you've listed:
SSBM - looks pretty cool but not much of a single player game
SMB - probably the only essential purchase if I was going to buy a cube
RL - being a fan of the original pc xwing and tiefighter, playing a game like this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Although it received rave reviews I have seen a lot of contrary views posted since. Clearly not for everyone.
RE - May be the best looking RE game ever, but if you don't like RE games (urrggh the controls) then you won't like this one.
P - Good but way too short I hear.
WR - Not much of an improvement over the N64 version.

As for the rest, well they're all not out yet, thus my point . Obviously these views may differ from yours and others, but who knows, they might be more in line with the original poster.

SSBM - looks pretty cool but not much of a single player game
This game does of course center around multiplayer but there's tons of stuff for a single player to do. There are 51 Event Matches, tons of characters and levels to unlock, Adventure and Challenge modes to go along with Classic mode, and much more.

RL - being a fan of the original pc xwing and tiefighter, playing a game like this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Although it received rave reviews I have seen a lot of contrary views posted since. Clearly not for everyone.
Not eveyone raves about the game but I haven't heard much negative said about it. I personally didn't like the game, but that's just because I don't care for the genre. It was still cool to play for lots of reasons though.

RE - May be the best looking RE game ever, but if you don't like RE games (urrggh the controls) then you won't like this one.
You couldn't be more wrong. No one likes the RE controls but everyone loves this game. This is one type of game where nice graphics are essential and the updated graphics make this game 100 times better than all of it's predecessors combined.

P - Good but way too short I hear.
It's just as long as most other games. The game could use some more replay value but there is plenty of reason to play through it 2 or 3 times.

WR - Not much of an improvement over the N64 version.
Even if that were true, is that really a problem? It's hands-down the best game of its type. What more do you want?

First I'll say that the guy who I responded to was talking about must own games. Anyway....
SSBM
This game does of course center around multiplayer but there's tons of stuff for a single player to do.
But probably not a must own game for 1p mode alone right?

RL - You said above you don't care for the game so I'll assume you agree with me on this one (about it not being a must own).

RE
This is one type of game where nice graphics are essential and the updated graphics make this game 100 times better than all of it's predecessors combined.
Now get a grip mate. How does having better graphics make a game 100x better? I think anyone with a shred of commonsense would disagree with this. I mean RE:CV looked pretty snazzy, but I wouldn't say it was significantly better than the PS games.

P
It's just as long as most other games. The game could use some more replay value but there is plenty of reason to play through it 2 or 3 times.
I dunno I've seen figures of 10-20 hrs levelled at it, which almost makes it a rental. And hardly a must-own.

WR
Even if that were true, is that really a problem? It's hands-down the best game of its type. What more do you want?
It's another case of if you didn't like the previous version (on the n64) you probably won't like this one.

When I said EA, I meant Electronic Arts as a whole has more games coming out for the GC, but EA Sports/Big has three extra GC titles too... F1 2002, Freekstyle, and Knockout Kings 2003 (GC exclusive so far).

SSBM: Anyway you look at it, this is a must own title. I for one, actually prefer the 1 player mode, as it is so deep that it has managed to keep me interested in playing it to this day (and I got it before its release date). Sure multiplayer is fun, but I can't see how someone can't see that the meat and potatoes of this game lies in the single player mode, where characters become unlocked and trophies must be collected. I haven't even conquered more than half of the tasks and trophies needed for the "completion" of this game. It's the best game for Gamecube, and is in my opinion the best game since Zelda OOT.

RE: I completely agree with you... better graphics don't make the better game. What we have here though is a game that is incredibly deep and fascinating, and does everything that it sets out to do (scare you, draw you in, puzzle you, make you forget what you think you know about the original RE) EXTREMELY well. The addition of harder to kill zombies and Crimson Heads, lack of healing supplies and ammunition, defense weapons, and the increase in difficulty (probably 5 times as difficult as Code Veronica) definitely make this a no brainer for any mature GC owner. The graphics are just an added bonus. I still like RE2 the best though...

I recently sold Smash Bros Melee, too "button masherish" for me in the end. Not so much a "must own" as it is a "must rent".

Graphics are essential to a game like RE. Think about all the things to look at every time you enter a new room. Every object and shadow could be a zombie. If the graphics suck, you'll lose the suspense of wondering what everything really is. Plus the game is sorta like a work of art. Cinematic camera angles, detailed paintings, moody music, etc. With crappy graphics you lose a lot of the game. Plus it's nice to walk through a rich, detailed, and absolutely gorgeous environemnt as opposed to the endless non-descript environments of other games.

I dunno I've seen figures of 10-20 hrs levelled at it, which almost makes it a rental. And hardly a must-own.
If that's your criteria for owning a game you must not own a lot of games.

RL - You said above you don't care for the game so I'll assume you agree with me on this one (about it not being a must own).
Nope. I said I don't care for the genre. The game's pretty great, it's just not for me.

It's another case of if you didn't like the previous version (on the n64) you probably won't like this one.
Actually it's the other way around. A lot of people were mad at Nintendo for changing the controls from the last game. Maybe you should give it a try...
