Anyone get Soldier of Fortune 2 yet?
How is it? I have the beta demo, but I can't find the game in stores yet.
|
No, I'm afraid it might offend my sensibilities.
|
After getting the great experience in the demo at seeing the kids calling each other all sorts of names, Im not even considering buying the game. It might look great and play great, but its hardly worth it to buy a game just so some idiot kid can insult me to make himself feel big.
|
Circuit City will have it for $39.99 next week. This price will also include a copy of the Platinum edition of the original Soldier of Fortune game.....
|
You know, Feneant, there is a whole single player experience included in the package. :)
|
I had a fairly good experience online with the test, (but I haven't played recently, so maybe it has devolved since then) and I think the single-player will be fun. I haven't played an FPS game with modern weapons yet (just WWII-era weapons and light sabers), and I get a kick out of that. I'll be picking it up when it comes out.
I think Best Buy will have the SOF2+SOF1 package for $39.99, as well... check the Bargains forum. |

Played a couple of hours through to the 2nd "country" in the game. Presentation is nice & slick with good voice acting and lots of in-game cinemas. The story reminds me a bit of Mission Impossible 2. Don't know if that's good or bad. :)
Weapons look pretty good but have a slight cartoony look. Actually, the gameplay feels like a stange mix of cartoony and tactical. eg, the enemies are smarter and make good use of grenades to flush you out, plus your accuracy goes down when you rock & roll with the machine guns. However, the speed of the movements, close engagement distances, and general flow of the game feel arcadey. It's tough to explain. Negatives - Not much. I find the width of the view angle & design of the stages (even when they're supposed to be outdoors) make the game feel very cramped & claustrophobic. It's subjective, I know, but games like Max Payne could do indoor areas and make them feel large. Completely the reverse here. Even Medal of Honour, which uses the same base engine, manages a much larger scope. It gives the game an antiquated, Quake2-engine feel where everything was obviously artificially enclosed. Then again, there's still a lot of game left, so it could improve. |
Just a warning: I went out to look for the game today, and my Best Buy and Circuit City (Rockville, MD) didn't have it in stock. I picked it up at CompUSA. Electronics Boutique said they also had it in stock.

I have some graphical issues in the single player mode that aren't in the multiplayer mode ?? (on my g550) so be warned. Also the only new multiplayer map that I've tried so far chugs quite a bit when compared to mpshop (the one in the test). Hopefully they won't be in the test.
Needs to say I'm a little disappointed at this stage. Chris |
Well I was going to pick it up...but haven't made it out to the stores to get it yet. I did d/l the retail version because I wanted to see how it ran compared to the Test. I was a fan of SoF and am enjoying this one so far. MP will be fun as well...I think I'm gonna have to get a new video card though...the ole GF3 ti 200 is chugging along a wee bit slower than I thought it would...
I will be picking the game up next week though so I can play MP... |
More thoughts on the game... the enemy is tough. They are well supplied with different kinds of grenades (flash, smoke, frag), and when you hear that "tink tink tink" sound, it's bad news.
While the graphics for the characters leaves something to be desired (IMO), their wound/death animations are outstanding. I've seen people drop their weapons and clutch their hand, or hop around on their good leg, or drop like a sack of potatoes. One more thing about graphics... the shadow graphics need some serious work. Not something I noticed when I was out fighting, but when you're in an office-type area with people sitting down, it's completely noticeable and it looks horrible. I can't believe no one caught that, or that they would let it go. More graphics notes... so far, the exteriors look great. One of the first big levels is in Colombia (hope I'm not giving too much away there), and it looks beautiful. Water effects, not so much, but the trees & grass look pretty cool. The plot and how it's playing out so far is pretty interesting. I'm happy so far. |
Played the game some more today. ipkevin mentioned making indoor buildings feel small... well, in the beginning parts of the games, you're not going into government-type buildings like in Max Payne (except for "The Shop" building), so it's a different kind of building. I've been engaging enemies on the exterior levels at far distances, also, so maybe it's style-of-play dependent (taking them down long-range vs. short-range).
I take back what I said... the water effects are fine. Silly dialogue alert after the jungle level... Spoiler:

Cheesy enemy super vision alert! The jungle stages have very artfully done tall grass and shrubbery. The effect is very nice and really gives the feel of being on a jungle crawl. If you go prone and creep slowly through it, the atmosphere generated is incredible. But here's the shitty thing: The brush provides YOU with no concealment whatsoever, yet the enemy can hide in it no problem. They'll see you even if you're lying prone in the bushes 50 feet away, but when you open fire then can just crouch into the grass and they'll 'disappear' from your view! Very irritating and "cheap" way to give the AI an advantage. I guess they were too lazy to simulate the concealment aspect in the AI but then why go through all of the trouble? It will work in multiplayer though, so I guess there's that.
Static Cling is right about the death animations. Cool stuff. They actually bothered to model how the corpse interacts with the environment. ie, if a tango falls on a small rock, his body parts will rest on or droop off of it realistically. BTW, I hope I didn't give anyone the impression that the game is REALLY close-quarters when I said "close engagement distances". I mean, it's not like you'll be fighting with pistols & shotguns the whole time. You do find yourself picking off guys at a distance. But it's still close compared to a game like Operation Flashpoint or even certain scenes in Medal of Honour. Maybe it'll change when I get further on. Still, all of the levels so far have an enclosed feel to them. |
One of my big gripes especially since it is the reason I played multiplayer on the first one forever is they took out the single shot to the head. Now it takes 2 to 3. Everyonce and a while I will get right behind someone and fire and it hits them and they spin around and light me up. I also wish they had a silenced weapon. I could also do with a decrease or total elimination of the fog.

just started playing and am already stuck. none of the doors want to open. any help???? i am in the very first area. thanks.

Did you try the tutorial? Hit the "use" key to open doors. Some doors won't open because they're locked... you'll hear some sort of "clunk" or "doorknob rattling" noise in this case.
I set my "use" key to my Mouse3 button... makes it more convenient than putting it on the keyboard. |
