GameCube Price Drop: Now $149

Report comes from GameCube Europe. Is this a reliable source?

http://www.cube-europe.com/news/102173158663338.html

News: Another price drop!

Posted on 18/5 by Johan

The drop will take place on this Tuesday, in other words in the middle of the E3.
Appearantly, Nintendo of America has sent material, mainly posters, four days ago to electronic stores that included this information. This would suggest that Nintendo has been planning this for a while, before Xbox and PS2 dropped in price.
The posters say that the Nintendo GameCube will be dopping in price from 200$ to 149$.

This line makes me doubt the report. Past experience has taught me that if the stores know, everyone knows.

It's official! IGN Cube just posted the official price drop!

Nintendo Ups the Ante, Drops the Price

NINTENDO GAMECUBE MSRP Set At $149.95

REDMOND, Wash.--May 20, 2002--Less than one year after successfully launching NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) at a mass-market price, Nintendo of America Inc. is dropping the MSRP to $149.95, effective Tuesday, May 21, 2002. To date, Nintendo has shipped more than 4.5 million systems worldwide and its hit title, Super Smash Bros.(TM) Melee, has topped the 2.5 million mark. Today's announcement comes as the $27 billion interactive entertainment industry gathers in Los Angeles for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to preview the latest and greatest games coming out this holiday.

"It's simple, really: Nintendo is committed to offering our players the best games and the best price," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "We were the first manufacturer to reach the $199 price level and now we're leading the industry to $149 -- allowing even more players around the world to get their hands on our legendary favorites like Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Metroid this year."

Nintendo's four headliners arrive in brand new adventures, exclusively on NINTENDO GAMECUBE:

-- In Super Mario Sunshine(TM), the world's most beloved plumber arrives for a tropical vacation...only to discover that his good name has been soiled by adversaries -- and it's his job to clean up the mess.

-- The elfin hero Link sports a brand-new look that perfectly reflects his emotions throughout The Legend of Zelda(TM), as he embarks on an epic quest across land and sea to rescue his sister.

-- With Star Fox(R) Adventures, Nintendo and Rare Ltd. create one of the most technologically advanced video games in history, with a compelling and whimsical story line that parallels a feature film.

-- Fans around the world finally get the chance to find out what it looks like to meet Space Pirates face-to-face as Metroid(R) Prime gains first-person perspective.

In total, Nintendo and third party partners will expand game portfolios by year-end to more than 300 for Game Boy Advance and more than 150 for NINTENDO GAMECUBE. While retaining its unrivaled appeal to players of all ages, Nintendo is also aggressively moving forward with games designed to appeal to a broader audience with exclusives such as Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM), and Resident Evil Zero.

As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.4 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Sweet! And don't forget the current deal at Best Buy: buy 2 GC games and save $15 or buy 3 GC games and save $30.

This would be an easy buy for me if not for Xbox lowering it's price. I had made up my mind to get a GameCube, but now I really want an Xbox. Sure, I could buy both of them, but then I wouldn't have any money for games. I saw the announcement from barnes and noble about the GameCube price drop and they were offering a free gift with purchase. I wonder if there will be some incentive besides the new lower price that will draw people to GameCube?

Super Monkey Ball for $9.99 is a steal. I bought this game at launch for $50 and I am still playing it! Can't wait for the sequel...

Wow, I wonder if it is a mistake. Can anybody else confirm it? I might pick it up at that price even though I don't have a GameCube.

I didn't...I was referring to dek's post above mine. Checking Bestbuy.com, however, shows that they are selling it for $29.99. Which is still a steal.

$9.99 would've been amazing, but I'm still happy to get it for $29.99. Actually I'm thinking of getting it along with a $49.99 title at BB so I can get the $15 off (or possibly with two other titles for the $30 off) though I'll need to buy a gamecube pretty soon if I do that! Anyone know if BB will let me use the $5 off $19.99 video games/accessories (from EGM) along with this promotion?

Thanks for the info guys..

I went to bestbuy today, and couldn't haggle the 150 price until tommorow.. oh well.

I did use the buy 3 get 30 dollars off to snag: Soccer Slam, Smash Bros, and nabbed Monkey ball for free with the discount. 3 games with tax etc. cost 106. Not bad at all.. Now to get a system.

Success! BB definitely has this deal in their system wrong. It's supposed to be $15 off 2 games or $30 off 3, but they are giving $30 off with only 2 games!

See here for more details:

Oh man..... choices, choices! I was considering buying an Xbox, but now It'll be a tough choice between it and GC. I'll probably wait until Christmas when all the good games are out then make a decision

Buy ANY 2 games, get $15 off. Buy ANY 3 games, get $30 off.

Several titles @ $29.99 including Home Run King and Madden 2002. Even better... Dark Summit, NFL Quarterback 2002, and Super Monkey Ball are $9.99! I picked up Dark Summit, Super Monkey Ball, and Resident Evil for $39.99 + tax!!

***Super Monkey Ball was marked $29.99 but rang up $9.99!

Buy.coms $15 off $150 w/ free shipping means a Gamecube for $135 shipped.

$135 shipped. EVERY gamer should have a Cube for $135.
