New GameCube Price Poll

Okay everyone. The gods at Microsoft and Sony have spoken and prices have dropped. What is everyones guess as to what the new price will be?

Cyberock 05-16-02 12:27 AM

Well, we'll see what they do. They are having a press conference at E3 at 10:30 am on May 21st. I would assume if they are going to cut there price, they would announce it there.

cubanx 05-16-02 04:19 AM

The smart move is around $150 since that's when I will buy one personally. I do not think they can afford to lose market share at this time.

Yep, I just wish they would hurry up and announce it so I can go and buy one that day.

dglaser6 05-16-02 08:30 AM

I think they'll go even lower than 150....$129

spankyj 05-16-02 10:41 AM

They very well could go $129, it wouldn't suprise me at all. I actually would have voted that, but oh well, I'm one of those $99 lowballers, dragging down the mean.

Deftones 05-16-02 11:05 AM

I don't think they'll lower it.

some "news" from planetgame cube hinting at a GCN price drop.

PGC has uncovered a shred evidence that Nintendo intends to drop the price of the GameCube sooner than later…

We’ve just heard from one of our long-term retail reporters with some exciting news! Our retail-reporter friend, (we call him “Neosabre”) works at a major games-retail chain and just got in a new in-store display for GameCube. Not just any in store display either; one that advertises the Cube with “NEW LOW PRICE!”

The new GameCube display was received at Neosabre’s store just today, along with new PS2 and X-Box banners with their new prices. Neosabre didn’t know what the new price would be, or when the price cut would become effective. It seems that Nintendo is indeed planning a price cut. The only questions now are when and how much. However, it is possible that the new display was cooked up by the retail-chain in anticipation of such an announcement too, and may not reflect Nintendo’s actual plans. We’ll keep you posted as this develops.

Kellehair 05-16-02 11:25 AM

$179 or no change just yet.

Gizmo 05-16-02 11:27 AM

If its $149, Ill by one the day its cut. I wouldn't mind $179 if it came with a game (Maybe Luigi or Smash), or maybe an extra controller/mem card.

Gizmo 05-16-02 11:32 AM

Bad news?

IGNcube: All right, and we're going to throw you a little curve ball here. With Sony and Microsoft dropping the prices of their consoles in the U.S. does Nintendo have any plan to continue to price GameCube as the better buy by dropping its price?

Beth Llewelyn: We have no plans to make any price drop announcements. We set this price to what we thought was a good mass-market price and we still feel that way.

IGNcube: Nintendo still feels this way even if GameCube doesn't include DVD functionality as the PS2 and Xbox do?

Beth Llewelyn: It goes back to our core philosophy that GameCube is a gaming machine. That's what we're about. I don't have any numbers, but my understanding is that most people out there are buying game systems to play games. I don't think that has become a huge selling point.

cubanx 05-16-02 11:49 AM

Wasn't a Sony rep spouting that same line just day's before the drop?

Blake 05-16-02 12:17 PM

I don't care - already have one - I'd rather see them drop the price of new games to $40 - reward those who already bought the system. :)

sniper308 05-16-02 12:52 PM

I was just at a Kb Toyworks & they had a deal going if you bought a game & GC you got it for one price (not sure but lower than $199), then a lower price if you bought it and 2 games, and finally if you bought a GC & 3 games you got the GC for $149 (plus the price of the games)... maybe they will incorporate some kind of tiered strategy like this to get the game sales to console ratio up.

Tigger 05-16-02 01:52 PM

They should keep the GC at $199 but include some kind of package deal in the mix. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a "Deluxe Set" (much like in the past with the NES, SNES and N64) where they will unclude a game and extra controller or controller and memory card for the same price. Going lower right now for Nintendo would hurt more than help.

darkside 05-16-02 07:03 PM

Nintendo was rumored awhile back at dropping to $149.99 if the PS2 dropped its price to $199.99. I'm betting they will anounce it soon.

Sominex 05-16-02 07:24 PM

$129 - $139 W/O a game

$179 W/ Game and memory card

Yeah, but its still 'old' technology... I bought a DC the day it came out, and I wasn't rewarded... Oh wait, Games for $4.99! Heh

Anthony Soprano 05-17-02 05:00 AM

I don't think it will change, but if it did, $149 would make sense.

Gizmo 05-17-02 10:17 AM

Over the years, Nintendo cuts the price 1/4... GBA was $99, then $79 (though it has changed to $69, $74, etc), so I think $149 would be about right...maybe $169.

joshd2012 05-18-02 11:38 AM

Well, it looks like $149 has the majority. Now, only if Nintendo would make their announcement. I am surprised they haven't done so already. I can't imagine sales being all to good right now when they are the same price as everyone else.

jim_mailman1962 05-18-02 10:35 PM

I don't think they'll be dropping the price for awhile, if they do, it'll be after christmas! or they could just start putting the game Super Smash Bros. Melee in the consoles and keep the $200 price.

No price drop, no GC for me... I already bought a copy of RE & am waiting for the price drop, if there isn't one RE goes back & I'll pick up an X-Box...

Lethal Nemesis 05-19-02 09:07 PM

If Nintendo drops the price, they would most likely drop it to $149, although I do like the prospect of keeping it at $199 and including a game and/or an extra controller and/or a memory card in the package.

wiilll 05-19-02 10:00 PM

$99 i'm hopin for. then i would really want to buy a GameCube.
