Odd problem playing Civilization 3. Help?

This is the only game I have where this happens. When I start it up, I see the little opening movie, then my screen looks as though it's changing frequency as the image then squishes to fill only about half my screen (in letterbox no less) with distorted, squiggly lines. I think my drivers are all up to date. Any ideas?

Athlon XP 1800
evga geforce 4400
512 ram

Thanks.

It could be your monitor has funky settings for that resolution. Have you tried adjusting your settings there?

Barring that, have you downloaded the latest patch for the game? Not sure if that will fix it, but it's worth a try.

What is the make and model of the monitor? What resolution are you trying to play on?

edited to say: I had to change the refresh rate in the .ini file. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Speaking of which, I noticed on Gone Gold that a new update came out for Civilization. I forget the version #.
