State of Emergency: Review

Just picked it up.
It's a great game but not totally kick ass keep in mind that I have only played it for about an hour or two. The controls are pretty good shooting is a little bit of a pain because there is no real aim feature, so you kinda just spray bullets in the general direction of what you want to hit and hope you do. (It's cool to see the crowds reaction though)

The constant running of people is pretty cool too but they can hinder your vision. Sometimes there is just too much happening and at once for you to take in.

My only real complaint is right now it seems too easy I was able to fight off at least 10 cops with my bare hands no problem. I hope as I get further in the game it becomes more difficult.

All in all I'de give it a 7.5 after only playing for a few hours. What's everybody elses take on the game?

They gave it an 8.5, but the review is quite critical and I'm surprised by the words that it got this high of a rating (just my opinion).

Maybe they were influenced by the Russian judges! :)

This game is garbage. Nothing personal but i'm just terribly disappointed in this title. Don't be surprised if you see it in the exchange forum by morning.

Uhhh....okay.....did you even play it?

My roommate got it and he definitely enjoyed it after about 2 hours of play. He wished that there was a jump button though, and the game is surprisingly linear. It's no GTA3, but he said it's fun. I just watched him beat people and shoot at random passerbys for a while :)

mee2 02-16-02 02:09 AM

Why in the hell would i reply to this topic if i didn;t ow the game.
You can do pretty much everything that supposedly makes SOE "fun" in GTA3, and then some.
As i said, don't take it personal....

EGM put up their review on gamers.com. The three EGM reviewers gave the game the following:

6.0
6.5
6.5

My personal opinion......

I did not actually play it but I watched my step-son playing it last evening.

My first experience with GTA3 was that I really wanted this title......saw my step-son playing it.....and wanted it even more.
Once I got it.....I simply loved it and will keep it on the shelf which is unusual for me as many of my games make their way to ebay.

SOE....really wanted this title....looked really good with all of the previews etc.

As I watched it being played last night.....my first thought was "cheap gameplay". I read an article which contained an interview with the developer. In this interview, the question was asked regarding the violence etc.....the developer stated that while there was much violence in this game it was somewhat of a funny type of violence in the way the game presented itself. Their point was.....you can't really take it seriously because of the way the violence in the game is presented....the way the people look in their comical way etc....

I have a feeling that Rockstar toned this game down more than needed due to all of the flack they received about GTA3...I hope this isn't true and I hope they do not ruin the next GTA with this same style of presentation. I do not think I will be buying this title....not even sure if I will actually play the game from what I saw last night. Just my opinion...will be interesting to see the
overall reaction to this title. :)

Venom 02-16-02 10:36 PM

i wouldn't recomend buying it. make it a rental first as i think it would get really boring quickly. i only played the game for 10 minutes in the choas mode and then left for dinner. i am now here instead of playing it, unlike gta3 which had me playing for hours and hours on the day i got it. the game looks fun to play though, you just can't judge it from that only.

about the gore, on the options menu there is a gore setting to mild or blood and guts, or something like that. i don't know if they toned down the violence or the gore mode or not, but if you use the hatch you can take peoples heads clean off. now that is fun.

young 02-18-02 06:35 PM

well, a coworker bought it based on his enjoyment of GTA3 but he doesn't like it... will try to return it.

i borrowed it and i just tried it... ran around in chaos mode for several minutes but i got bored/tired of it. i loved smash tv b/c it had a sense of strategy (overhead view) but this game is truly chaotic and it may be deeper than what i think, but my first impression is that i don't want it.

if it ever gets to $20, i may reconsider.

Gallant Pig 02-18-02 07:08 PM

So is anybody really loving this game?

Derrich 02-19-02 08:01 AM

I like it a lot. Granted, the Revolution mode is boring and could have easily been made a lot better.(Real cut scenes, fewer and more diverse missions).
But the Kaos mode is terrific. Running around shooting and blowing crap up. Bonuses and objectives popping up randomly. People screaming and chasing you around. Its like an update of SmashTV,Robotron, and every Beat-em Up ever made.

I'm loving the chaos mode. The game suffers a lot because of comparisons to Grand Theft Auto. The revolution mode can't compare, and, in fact, the main flaw of the revolution mode is that it appears they tried to beef it up, either as a response to GTA, or as a response to gamers' complaints that games are too short. It's a little bit repetitive, and I'm not sure I'll make it through the whole thing. I find myself tilting towards playing chaos, but I can easily lose two hours at a time trying to top my high score. As an arcade brawler, this game is excellent. With all the variable objectives and random point modifiers, and the huge numbers of enemies, Chaos should have the endless freestyle replayability of Tony Hawk or SSX.

This game is disappointing not because it did not live up to expectations, but, rather, that the game was never what many gamers thought it was. Killing the people in State of Emergency doesn't really give you the thrill of complete immorality that is thematic to GTA, and the gameplay mechanics are completely dissimilar. A lot of people were expecting more of GTA3 from this game, and they didn't get that. If GTA hadn't been as good, this game would have gotten better reviews. In the end, SOE will likely fare better than games like Stuntman, The Getaway, NFS: Hot Pursuit 2, and the next Driver game, which have all been rendered irrelevent by the achievements of Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto 3.

Are you talking about Grand Theft Auto III or State of Emergency?

Neo512210 02-19-02 06:13 PM

Man I love this game I picked this up along with Maximo and sorry to say I have not touched maximo yet. I love chaos mode but the best is the last clone standing challnge now talk about mindless violence. If i were to compare it to GTA3 which people should not do I would give it a 6 but as its own game i say 8.5

Tsohg was the original poster, reviewing his copy of State of Emergency. So, it would only make sense that he'd be talking about SoE in his latest post, saying that he's not so thrilled with it anymore.

Derrich 02-20-02 07:56 PM

I just played the Last Clone Standing option on SOE. I can easily say that it was the most disturbing game I have ever played.
Hundreds of people running around, screaming and cowering in front of you while you just mow them down mercilessly with machine guns. They dont attack you or threaten you in any way. It's the closest thing to a schoolyard shooting that they'll ever have in a video game.

GTA3 may have been controversial, but I think Rockstar is gonna be spending a few days in court over this one.

I hadn't picked up the game yet when I asked this question, and you gotta admit, it does sound like he could be talking about GTA3. Didn't realize that there was a Chinatown in SOE.

Anyway, I picked SOE up yesterday and played it for quite a while. It's mindless, sure, but it's also a hell of a lot of mindless fun. I was expecting to prefer the Revolution mode, but the Chaos mode is much more fun and extremely addictive. Not a whole hell of a lot of strategy, and the only thing it really has in common with GTA3 is graphic violence. That's okay though...I already own GTA3 and am glad this is something different. Not a revolutionary game, but it'll keep me up late for a while.
