Best RPG out right now?

I need a new RPG.
I've beaten FFX so thats already off the list.

I was looking over Eternal Fantasia and other PS2 RPGs.
There are about 6 or so new ones. (or maybe not new, I just never played them)

My question is, which is the best?
Story Wise.
I'm looking for a good story.

Just to clarify... you're looking for a console RPG? What platform? There was a thread on PC RPGs recently, if you're interested in those. If you liked FFX, maybe the PS1 FF's would appeal to you.

All the FFs that are on the PS are good.
Grandia 2 is *decent*
Lunar series is good
Xenogears of course
Dragon Warrior 7 is decent (my gf loves the game)

If you are just looking for "newer" rpg's there really hasn't been anything great lately. Golden Sun for the GBA is supposed to be good I hear, Breath of Fire is on the GBA now too. I'm in kinda an RPG slump right now myself, I dont own a GBA, GC or Xbox so basically i'm stuck with the PS2 for now and there really aren't many good rpgs coming for it soon.

If your looking for another rpg for the ps2, give shadow hearts a try. It's pretty good. Lot's of blood/gore though.

my suggestions

If you have even a remotely decent computer (ie >233MHz), then you really owe it to yourself to play Planescape Torment if you haven't yet. Best RPG ever for any system IMO. And many would agree that the story is the best ever seen in an RPG. Or any game for that matter. You can pick it up for $10 at Wal-Mart these days. Comes in a dual-jewel with some other game.

If you have a PS2, check out Drakan. Recently released, and it's gotten some pretty decent reviews. The original poster emphasized a desire to look for a console RPG with a good story. IMO the best RPG's (story-wise) usually end up on the PC, not on consoles. So try looking there. (Although they can and are usually very entertaining, I have yet to play a console game with a compelling story that really sucked me in. And yes, I've played FF7, FF10, MGS2, blah, blah)

Nothing against consoles. I have one and love it. But consoles are for action. PC's are for deeper games.

Awesome! Great advice. I think I really needed to hear another good thing about Planscape Torment before actually getting it. RPG's seem to be the opposite of most game genres: newer does not necessarily mean better. ;)

Skies of Arcadia. 'nuff said

BrinStar 02-10-02 04:07 PM

Sorry I need to clarify.

PS2 or Dreamcast, altho I think I've beaten everything for Dreamcast.

Grandia, beat it.
Skies of Arcadia, beat it.
FF1-10, beat them all but FF2.
Drakkan, beat it when it originaly came out on PC about 3 years ago.
Planescape, tried to get into it but lost intrest when my PC died.
Baldersgate I'm almost done with it just takes too long.

I'm trying to get away from PC gaming. Costs too much and my PC is becoming more and more of a work computer and less of a Gaming machine. Colsoles are satisfying enough for now.

There are like 5 or 6 new RPGs out for PS2, anyone played them yet?

I like the console RPGs personaly.
The PC RPGs become almost soapopera like in depth. Plus they take a little too long. Console RPGs wrap up in about 20+/- hours of play. Hell Baldersgate is STILL going and I've had it for about a year. Dun have enough free time for stuff like that.

There aren't many great RPGs out for the PS2 right now IMO. You can use it to play Grandia and Vagrant Story from the PSX though. Those are the 2 best RPGs I played last generation.
