I miss the "Old school" video games
It seems like almost all video games nowadays are more 'involved' than the games of, say, the 80's. I miss being able to go into an arcade (or play Atari, Colecovision, NES, etc...) and plop in a quarter and play a good old fashioned video game. I'm gonna list a bunch of games, and you'll probably think of a bunch also, but try to compare anything released today to them...
Defender Pacman Tempest Scramble Donkey Kong Dig Dug Space Invaders Asteroids Crystal Castle Mr. Do Lady Bug Galaga GORF Wizard Of War Frogger These games were great!! I personally think we need to see some of these come out for the new consoles, kind of like the namco museum games, which I still play alot on my PS1. These games were the "Jerry Bruckheimers" of video games--put in a quarter and be entertained for 2-15 minutes without expending too much brain power. Think about it, when's the last time you played alot of the games listed above? Don't you miss 'em?? |
I totally agree...not that I dislike the games that are around now, but I remember being able to play those games for hours on end without getting bored. I did have a chance last summer to play pacman for an hour at a pizza parlor while camping with some friends.

Ah, the old-school arcades. I remember spending many hours in those dark, noisy places. The family would go to the mall on Saturdays and my parents would give me some money to spend in the arcades where I would spend 2, 3 or 4 hours.
Edit: Another word about arcades. I guess it is a good thing that we now have these home systems that are couple of surpassing pretty much anything the arcade can pump out. I find it a little sad now though that you can't walk into an arcade and be wowed over some new game. |
While I love many of the new games, I agree that we need these old games, too. They are classics that are many times just more fun. I don't understand why some companies don't make arcade packs available so we can still play the classic Frogger, Donkey Kong, etc. :(

Inspired by Goblincat, I plan to build my own MAME arcade machine, and I will have some of those games.
I always play Moon Patrol and Dig Dug at this resturant we go to when we visit our grandparents, and they are STILL fun... |

NESticle allows me to replay all of my old NES favorites!

I miss the good old side scroller beat 'em ups Like Double Dragon, Contra, and Streets of Rage just you and your buddy walking around and kicking ass for no reason; using just two to for moves punch and kick and hold both down for your "special" move. aaahh the good old days

IMHO a lot of the great older games were/are great because of their simplicity. Totally simple yet original concepts made for excelent gameplay.
To me, allthough I like a lot of games out now, that simplicity and originality seems to be missing. |

If you liked "Ghosts & Goblins" or "Ghouls & Ghosts," you might be interested in checking out "Maximo" (PS2). It's basically a 3D version of the earlier two games, which were definite classics. PS2 also has an updated version of "Spy Hunter" which is pretty cool.

How about Chu-Chu Rocket or Super Monkey Ball?

While new games may be more "involved". I miss being "involved" in the old games. Nothing in the past few years has been a challenge like old games like ghosts and goblins, ninja gaiden etc. Everything now is just walk around and collect stuff for 20 years and the challenge relying 90% on how crappy the games camera is. Devil may cry, for example. It's an awesome game but I beat it the first time i ever played it without even dying ONCE, that hurt the replay value tremendously.

I dream of being in the arcade they have in TRON. Brings back memories of many a quarter when I see the games he's walking past.

I just had to resurrect this.
I got my 6 CDs of MAME Roms in the mail the other day. I spent last night going through the games I now have. I got the first few components for my dedicated arcade machine the other day, and I can't wait to get started. Here's some I played last night: Cadash (I LOVED this game when I was a kid) Metal Slug Pit Fighter Aliens v. Predator Rockman 2: The Power Battles (this is like a MegaMan fighting game from Japan. Basically just a series of boss battles...very cool) Ghouls and Ghosts Forgotten Worlds Gradius Yie-Ar Kung Fu (This games was WAY ahead of it's time. Tons of moves I never knew about in the arcade) And a bunch more I can't remember right now. I DO miss the old school games... |
State of Emergency's Chaos mode is an evolution of the old school beat-em-up, and it's a blast to play. However, the mission mode is essentially Grand Theft Sucko, and you have to play it to unlock 3 of the 5 playable characters.

I really do miss the old days when the arcade was king. I don't know how much money I wasted playing gauntlet or street fighter. I do agree that some new games don't have the straigt up addictive factor and difficulty that the old ones did. I picked up Namco Museum for PS2 and I have worn grooves playing all the old games. Galaga rules! How do you going about making you own mame machine?

I miss the NES and SNES days. I never got into Atari. I was too young I guess, and the games are just too simplistic for me now. However, I still love the NES and SNES games. I play NES games on my PC all the time and got a Game Boy Advance mainly for SNES ports (Super Mario World is awesome) and SNES type games.
There are a lot of great games on the newer system, but none of them seem quite as fun as these older games to me. For example, no 3-D platformer has touched the fun of Super Mario World yet IMO. Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and Rayman 2 are the only ones to come close IMO. |
draven-x: Are you sort of figuring out your arcade machine as you go along, or have you read some websites? I dont really know if it's something I'd do, but I'd like to read up on what you need to do to to build one.
Is there source code out for the Linux version of MAME? There is a Linux kit for the PS2 coming out soon, and if you could get MAME games running in Linux through the PS2, it would probably be a lot easier to make a reliable arcade machine :) Brian |
You can play all these games for a quarter at Gameworks :)
