What is the correct way to shut down disc systems?
Ok, being the sole GCN owner to have actually read to instructions how do you turn it off? In the instructions it says to hit the open button first then remove the game then hit power. That does not really make any sense to me. Why not just hit the power button? If this is the case, do you do the same to the dreamcast?
Or is this just a totally stupid and moot point? |
I just hit power on all my systems. They all have worked fine so far.

This was brought up earlier by someone and opening the lid first is the correct procedure and I do it now.
When you open the lid the system puts the laser in the rest position and stops the disc spinning. This is the safest place for the laser to be when the system is off and can help extend the life of the system, especially if you move the system around while its off. It may not matter much either way, but opening the lid first is a good idea for the Game Cube, Dreamcast, Playstation, etc. |
It seemed weird to me, too, when I got my Dreamcast, but that's the method the instructions suggests. Not sure if it would hurt the system over the long run to not do it that way, but I figure it's not worth the chance.

I had my PSX for 4 or 5 years, still works perfectly and all I did was hit the power button. Its really no big deal.

So, wait...
1. Open disc drive. 2. Remove game. 3. Turn off power. Am I supposed to close the disc drive in between steps 2 and 3? <img src="http://communities.msn.com/_Secure/0LQCkGeIPRWcO1dr*q6Epi6Vg*hhUa0hDISa7u3u5FR*sG3fR8jGR8V6J!oPgfMjmhI9NIWcAkdI/frankie.gif"><font size="1">Fire bad!</font> |

hmmm.....
I've had my PSX for about 5 years and I've just been pushing the power button. I do the same for my DC but it acts up occasionally(who's doesn't ;)) I think I'm gonna start doing it the way you guys do, by opening the drive first. It sure sounds weird but it does indeed say that in the instruction book and you can never be too careful. I wonder if my DC would still work better than it does now if I had read the instruction book and stopped the system by opening the drive before powering down. Well it can't be fixed this way but at least further damage will be prevented. If it feels too weird doing it that way I might go back to the old power off button days :D. |
