I like the game, but that's because it's very linear and the random battles have been reduced. Battle system is fun, you can swap characters at any time. The graphics are nice, though you will see the difference between the movies spooled off the DVD and the in-game engine. Voice acting is decent. Sphere Grid system is a unique way of upgrading your characters' stats.

Read through the review at Gamespot (always a good place for reviews):

I started it today and I'm really impressed. I think it lives up to the Final Fantasy hype. I love the reduced random battles.

Short review: best game I've played in years.

Outlaw 01-01-02 01:38 PM

Its good, as always they change a few aspects about the game to keep it fresh, but is definitely good! My vacation has been consumed playing that game.

Cornfed 01-01-02 02:15 PM

I'm definitely disappointed. I can't help but feel this game has grabbed me by the wrist and pulling me straight to its next CGI sequence. It just feels like a Resident Evil game with a good old Final Fantasy combat system (with a few neat additions). The combat system is the best thing about this game. But in FF7, probably the best of the series, the combat system was the farthest thing from my mind. Because in FF7, you could go wherever you want, do whatever you want. I spent hours and hours doing things in FF7 that didn't progress the story at all - but I sure a lot of fun doing it; something I don't feel I can do at all in FFX. I have played for about 10 hours and I haven't done anything out of my own choice. As soon is it gets out of a CGI or a dialogue sequence. I have to run straight for five feet just watch another movie - this is no exaggeration in some parts of the game. I will stop going on about this. There are probably pretty good reasons why this thing keeps getting 9.5 scores. I just feel let down. FFX doesn't seem like it was made for the true Final Fantasy fans. Those who loved FF7 will have to go back to it, being that you won't find anything close to that experience in FFX.

mljones99 01-01-02 03:06 PM

best game I've played in a long time.

ellone 01-01-02 03:19 PM

I'm really enjoying the game, but it's not for those that don't like very linear games.

BigDave 01-01-02 04:06 PM

I'm over 10 hours in and have been really enjoying this game. Yes, at times you are just watching, but the graphics are amazing.

quietsoul 01-01-02 06:34 PM

compared to FFVII and VIII, this game is tops. true, at times there is a lot of in-game sequences, but it helps to progress the plot along. ok, the game for the most part is linear, but it follows the plot so it's acceptable. there is no world map and no exploring in that sense. but, let's be honest -- in FFVII and FFVIII, was there that much to explore? the only place i miss out of FFVII was the floating park -- i loved the snowboard game. there's nothing i miss out of FFVIII.

ok, just my two cents. :D

necros 01-01-02 06:57 PM

Well I got it :) I must say the graphics and all are great and the story seems cool so far.. but I think I'm gonna regret speding $15 more for the hint book, cuz so far I haven't needed it at all, it's like there's only 1 way to go so you never get lost... but it seems cool so far :)

well, it's easy enough to progress through the story, but i just realized that i missed a ton of stuff like the ultimate weapons and the optional sidestories. oh well, that's what gamefaqs is for -- can't wait until someone posts a complete and thorough walk-through.

I cannot believe you just said that.

c'mon, was FFVII that bad? after playing through FFX, FFVIII was worse than FFVII.

Kellehair 01-01-02 09:31 PM

No, FF7 wasn't that bad. FF6 was like 700% better though. FF8 just plain sucked in every way.

BigDave 01-01-02 09:58 PM

I actually prefer Final Fantasy from the 8-bit Nintendo. Now that was some serious gaming. ;)

That's the only other FF I've played other than FFX.

Lethal Nemesis 01-01-02 10:21 PM

I've only played FFX for about 10 hours so far, and I'm enjoying it. But for those of you who can look past graphics, I highly suggest playing FF Anthology for PS1.

Or even better get the FF Chronicles. It includes my favorite SNES RPG Chrono Trigger. One of Square's best efforts.

Thanks for reminding me about Chronicles! I've been meaning to buy that ever since it came out, but I never got the chance. :)

Yes, but I was ignorant to the magnificence of those masterpieces. Only now have I realized the fault in my ways. :D

Please tell me you played FF games before 7. If you haven't, there are far better FF games both before and after 7. The original FF for NES along with FF 4-6 were all great games (the original FF is the same in the US, 4 is FF2 in the US, 5 came out in FF Anthologies finally to the US and 6 is FF3 in the US) and FF9 was a blast to the past for people who have played the series before 7. 8 was the abberation in the series, you either loved it or hated it. It was a stone cold wake up call because it was so different than the others.

FFX is really a great game. Instead of going through pages of text, you're treated to the text in cinema-style presentation. If you really think about it, when you talked to everyone that was like being pulled from CGI to CGI...except there wasn't any CGI there before, it was just pages of text. FFX has changed some things, but not as drastic as 8 changed everything. I like the new battle system with the ability to switch in characters. I also like the sphere grid, although I do miss the level ups. However you are in control of your power ups.

7 was not the best FF game ever, that distinction probably belongs to 6. 7 isn't even #2. But you see, 7 was the entrance for millions of people into the FF world and they never chose to go backwards and see what FF was before 7. Please tell me you've played the games before 7 and have gone into them with an objective mind (i.e. not, "Nothing will ever beat FF7"). I still go back to play the old FFs, you should too and see how great things were even before 7. I would also recommend playing games such as Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story and for the strategy elements, Final Fantasy Tactics which was sorely not played by many people.

Fixed it. That one always confuses me. FF3 came out in Japan right before FF came out in America.

Naan 01-02-02 06:47 PM

Flame me all you want, but I guess I don't get it.

I bought FFX Saturday night and it's is pretty close to the biggest waste of $50 I've had all year.

I played for about 30 minutes and was bored. 2 Minute cut scene, control character for 15 seconds, 2 minute cutscene, fight, cutscene, run down bridge, cut scene, fall in water, cut scene, etc, etc.

I was bored. I have no doubt that the game gets better and I get to control my character for more than 15 seconds at a time at some point, but it's too late. I gave up.

I thought the whole point of the beginning of a game was to grab your attention and make you want to play it, or hell even to be able to play it at all.

My take: Big disappointment.

But the good news is my roommate likes it.

evenflow 01-02-02 08:35 PM

I'm 16 hours into it and the game is awesome. The battle system is great and the sphere grid for abilities is innovative. I like the fact that you can choose how to build each character. The storyline thus far is very good and not predictable. The characters have a lot of depth also. Unlike Squall in FF8, Tidus, the main character in FFX is likeable, albeit a little fruity and stupid.

Kellehair 01-02-02 11:46 PM

Fruity and stupid? That reminds me a bit of...Squall!

Kellehair 01-03-02 04:56 PM

Did anyone see today's poll at www.gamefaqs.com ?! The poll asks "Which is the best game in the Final Fantasy series?" FF7 has 13% more votes than FF6. I want to cry.

Sad, isn't it? :( FF7 was both a godsend for the future of RPGs (whether a good or bad godsend is up to debate) and a deathknell for the past at the same time. It brought RPGs out of the relative niche market it was in and into the mainstream. Sony and Square advertised it to death and everyone wanted it.

The truly sad thing is that some to most of the newer RPG players of today never played the FFs and other RPGs that came before FF7. Many of them think FF7 is the best RPG ever...how wrong they are.

Lethal Nemesis 01-05-02 06:34 PM

But it's not their fault that they haven't played the past FF's. Like you said, FFVII is what brought it mainstream, so many of those players that were introduced to RPGs by FFVII don't really know about FFVI and the rest of the FF games.

I've never played a Final Fantasy game that was great in the first 30 minutes. They spend time at the beginning setting up the story. Its usuall a hour or two in when the game starts to really shine.

Kellehair 01-05-02 09:45 PM

I thought the beginning of FF6 was pretty great. Watching the mystery character (Terra) and her military escort march through that snowy field with Terra's sad theme song playing the background was really nice. Just thinking about it makes me want to fire up a new game. The beginning of FF9 was OK too. It actually wan't great in anyway but the happy atmosphere of the first town made everything seem fun. If the whole game was like that it would have sucked but that was a pretty OK way to start things out IMO.

Get Me Coffee 01-06-02 12:16 AM

My heart will always be with FFVII!!! That game is one of my favorites!!

FFIX was the second best PSone FF game.

....and........well.......FFVIII........yeaaa, um that sucked.

SirPablo 01-06-02 12:37 AM

My bro and I just beat the game (well he was doing most of the work, i was helping him out in some points).

**SPOILERS**

Spoiler:
From what I saw, the fights toward the end were pretty difficult with little reward. The "ending" was not anything spectacular at all. Seemed like a waste of time almost, but the rest of the story was fairly solid. Yes, the game was pretty linear, but oh well. You think this is bad, wait until FFXI and online play come around.

Outlaw 01-06-02 02:57 AM

Being a long time FF fan....I pretty much agree with whats been said.
I've played every FF since the original, including FF2j and FF3j on the NES (with the exception of the Final Fantasy Legend gameboy series). My favorite is probably tied somewhere between FF6 and FF7. FF6 was truely a masterpiece with the music, innovative spell learning system with espers, deep characters and story. FF7 was the reason I bought my PSX and it really raised the level in terms of graphics for the series. I remember seeing the japanese commercial for the game during a commercial break on a Rurouni Kenshin tape I had at the time and was blown away, I could not believe that the battles looked like movie scenes. As much as a departure from the traditional FF standard as it was it still kept enough charm from the series in addition to the innovation that puts it high on my list. Plus it has one of the greatest characters of all time, Sephiroth!

No game will probably ever top the experience of FF6, but so far most of them have been pretty damn fun :) (yeah i've got to admit it, except VIII. Actually it might have been better if the lead role was someone else and you didn't have to use 4 minute long summons just to win regular battles, but still...). Its also good to see Square rereleasing their games in Anthology's. I really enjoyed the anthology makes of FFIV and FFVI. We need to make a petition or something to get Square to release a Seiken Densetsu Anthology pack with a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure, along with SNES The Secret of Mana, and the japan only Seiken Densetsu 3. That would rule!!

That's what everyone keeps telling me, but they already lost me. This was actually my first time playing a FF title, and like I said I was disappointed. It may be the greatest RPG ever created, but I can't get past their entirely counter-intuitive intro game to get to the good stuff.

It's probably going to end up on my shelf next to Planescape Torment as the best RPG's I've never played, because of what I consider horrible game design.

-Naan

V-ism 01-06-02 05:14 AM

Wow, Planescape Torment was so awesome. Anyway, having worked a lil bit on FFX I may be a little biased, but I think the game is great. Not the greatest I understand, I know there are quite a few flaws. But the graphics and presentation are what overwhelms me. If you complain that the action starts too slow and there's too much watching, well, all I can say is this is what RPG's are all about. They all start off slow because it's a story, the story needs to be laid out and presented to understand where you are going and why you are fighting. If you get bored with it at the beginning, then that's that. These RPG's aren't meant for you, try an action game. Doesn't mean the game was made poorly, just means you don't like it. Especially with Final Fantasy games, they are basically long movies where you can control the characters a little through the journey and take part in the battles. Which ultimately led to the ill-fated FF CG Movie. As for not being able to have much free will in the game, you will have total freedom at a later point in the game where you can go back to previous places to do certain things, mini-games, etc. From what I remember, most other FF games didn't have much you could do freely until you got near the end of the game. You always had only a few places you could possibly go or just one place you are meant to go.

bbox 01-06-02 11:33 AM

V-ism is right... I am near the end of the game and i've been playing side-quests for about 15 hours now. There is alot of stuff to do.
