Ditto your situation... I snagged...

Gran Tourismo 3
Grand Theft Auto 3
Tony Hawk 3
Madden 2002

All scored in the high 9's on the gaming sites that I've visited. Here's a good index with links to many reviews.

Thanks!

Altho I'll probably end up just getting Gauntlet and Frogger and stuff like that. I'll rent some of these (hell, I'll only be renting anyway, since game pricing are crazy)

That's right. I save all my most carefully thought out writing for the video game forum.

As for old skool, yeah, I'm not up much on recent games. But now I know what to borrow, at least.

Well, in that case, don't get a recent system. Frogger, incidentally, has been turned into a franchise, from what I understand, and is more of a second-rate 3-D platformer than an old school Frogger game. Also, the new versions of Gauntlet aren't terribly compelling either. Think Diablo, without the deep character development.

I recently bought:
grand theft auto 3
metal gear solid 2
final fantasy x
nba street
track and field
capcom vs snk
tony hawk 3

the games I can't keep my hands off of are ffx and track and field.
if your into rpg's definately pick up ffx. if you like action games get gta3. and everyone should own a copy of track and field.

all the rest of the games are good...but haven't kept my attention long enough.

Thanks. Yeah, the PS2 was a gift and I ain't gonna look it in the mouth. I will check out the ultra modern games that you guys recommended, too. But sometimes that old skool itch needs to be scratched... (Bring on Shinobi!)

Since it wasn't mentioned yet, I would also add Silent Hill 2 to the list. It is a must have for the PS2. Also, NFL2K2 is the best football game for the PS2, IMHO.

Baldur'sGate DarkAlliance. Especially if you like Gauntlet.
My favorite game of the year. I actually like this game more than FFX.

Metal Gear Solid 2 would be a close 2nd.

1. Metal Gear Solid 2 -- Seriously
2. Tony Hawk 3
3. Grand Theft Auto 3 -- SOOO much fun
4. Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec -- Best. Racing Game. Ever.
5. Jak & Daxter -- A near-perfect 3-D platformer

honorable mentions
Splashdown -- a really fun racer that looks GREAT
Devil May Cry -- solid action, but way hard
Final Fantasy X -- if you're into RPGs, this one looks amazing

That's an easy way to say Aloha to $400 Enjoy!

Well, I decided to try to satisfy both sides of my brain. I picked up the arcade disc with Pole Position, Dig Dug, Ms. Pacman, etc... and also Metal Gear Solid 2 on your recommendation (gotta love that 30% off at Virgin Megastore!)

Metal Gear Solid 2 is pretty damn cool. I of course have no idea what's going on (that's not true; I have a slight idea) and I didn't get a memory chip, but the game play is entertaining. Hell, just walking around punching guys lights out is fun. I'll really hunker down and get the game moving over the holidays. Thanks for the suggestions!

There were a couple of games at the store that intrigued me. When I remember what they were called I'll ask you guys if they're worth a look.

i have read many reviews on a lot of different games, but one thing that i notice is lacking is that all the games are usually reviewed for only one player. i like gauntlet dark legacy because its a fun game to play with someone else co-op. other games that were like this for other systems were TMNT, perfect dark, super mario kart. what games for the PS2 can be played co-op?
thanx for your replies.

Twisted Metal: Black can be played two-player co-op and four-player multiplayer.

Tony Hawk 3 can be played "versus" another player or on the internet.

There are many others, those are just the two I have.
