Square (Final Fantasy) president resigns.
http://www.coremagazine.com/news/5334.php3
11.26 11pm EST
Square held a press conference this
morning in Tokyo to announce the
resignation of president Hisashi
Suzuki. While a reason for his departure wasn't given, it's believed
he vacated the office due to heavy losses incurred with the failure
of the film 'Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.' The film, which was
expected to gross between $80-90 million in America, brought in
only $30 million. As a result, Square is expected to post a
mammoth 17.7 billion yen ($143 million) loss for the year, the
worst in the company's history. Suzuki-san will be replaced by
Yoichi Wada as president beginning December 1st, although he
will stay with the company in a chairman position.
Speaking briefly at the conference, Suzuki-san said 'In the switch
from the Super Famicom to the PlayStation generation there was
an overconfidence in our success. We must return to our humble
spirit and support the new president.' According to new president
Wada-san, Square plans to focus heavily on new game
development, and despite heavy losses, has no plans to cut staff.
Square is poised to deliver the eleventh chapter in the Final
Fantasy series for the PlayStation 2 in March 2002.

Seeing as how Sony owns 18% of Squaresoft, I don't think you'll ever see them on Nintendo ever. And I think they made the best choice by going over to Playstation instead of N64. I can't imagine how dull FF7-9 would be if it was on a 40 meg cartridge instead of the 3-4 CD's.

I'm glad they got out of the movie business, they were expanding into too many markets (especially the highly westernized characters in that movie, what was up with that?). Anyway, now they can focus on what they do best, make killer games!
Ok...if they don't put Final Fantasy on the GC or GBA....maybe they will at least develop the next Mario RPG like they did on the SNES. Even though paper mario was good Mario RPG on the SNES rocked!
