Madden GC vs PS2?

For those that have actually played the Cube version, how much better is it then the PS2 version? Is it noticeably better looking, play better (because I love the GC Controller) and load faster?

Would it be worth selling/trading in Madden PS2 to upgrade for a few $$?

Anthony Soprano 11-20-01 07:11 PM

It loads fairly fast and I love the controller set up on it. They both look great, but the GC maybe a little better. If you like the PS2 version, you might not want to spend the extra cash.

RCL66 11-20-01 07:22 PM

Sounds like you spent the extra cash or sold the PS2 version?

I love the GC controller and if it loads faster, those are pretty good reasons.. if I can sell off the old PS2 version for a good price!

For soem reason IGN and Gamespot rated Madden on GC lower than Madden on PS2... Which made me think it was cause of the controls... ?

RCL66 11-20-01 08:43 PM

Yeah, they rated the X-box version lower also. They said the game was the same or slightly better on both systems (X-box and GC) but then gave it a lower rating.. Looks like they didn't really put much effort into the reviews.

IGN's excuse if they have different guys reviewing for the different systems. Dunno about gamespot.

ClarkKentKY 11-20-01 09:37 PM

Good point.

The GC version loads faster and the graphics are a little better. The most noticeable enhancment is that the fields are more textured.

A downside, according to a review, is that you can only save 1 year of stats in Franchise mode in the GC version, compared to 5 years in the PS2 version due to the smaller memory card. I haven't checked this out myself as I have no interest in the Franchise mode, but it's probably true as the PS2's mem card, if I remember correctly, is 8MB and the GC's is 0.5 MB.

I read somewhere that the GC memory card is 4 MB. However, I don't really know. It has 59 blocks, but that really doesn't tell me anything. It is smaller than the PS2 card though.

Just wondering, but if I get a 64MB SD card and use the adaptor for the GC will I be able to save five years in franchise mode or is Madden 2002 not compatible with the 64MB card.

I'm almost postive the GC card is 0.5 MB, it was the PS2 number I wasn't sure about. I believe the GC card is 4 Mega Bits, so that might be where you got that from.

I doubt Madden supports it. I mean I'm sure you could save everything you can on a normal memory card to the 64MB one, I just doubt there is a special feature to let you save the Franchise stuff differently than you would using a normal card. There would probably be something about that in the instruction booklet and there's not.

Do people actually have the time and interest to play 3+ years in franchise mode and save and look at all the stats!????

Josh H 11-21-01 11:44 AM

Yes, some people do play franchise mode that long. The mode supports 30 seasons, I'm sure people play it all the way through. For a lot of people, Madden, and other sports games, are all they play. For me, I could care less about the franchise mode. I'll usually play one season, and then just play exhibition games after I finish it.

I just realized that I never answered your original question in my first post. No, I wouldn't bother upgrading. It's not worth the money/hassle to just gain slightly improved visuals and a more ergonomic controller IMO.

Noonan 11-21-01 03:24 PM

I've played both versions, and found that the only noticible gameplay difference is that the GC version does load much faster. The controls feel equally comfortable as the PS2 version. The graphics may have been a bit cleaner, but for a game like that, your eyes are moving around so much it's hard to tell. I haven't heard anything about the saves, but that would stop me from picking up the GC version. My friends and I are already into our 7th season of our franchise. In all, they are both great games, but if you already have the PS2 version, I don't see why you should spend any more money for the GC version. Save you money for a totally new game.

Yes! I am that person. I am a self-confessed sports addict. Of course you want to see how you're doing with the year before. What about things like all time records and such? Gotta make sure that's on there. You name it, I probably look for it at least once.

Believe me, I'm not the only one.

I don't even play a full season in sports games anymore......especially hockey. By about the 10th game, you can score at will almost.

I'd end up like losing maybe 3 games, and my top player would have 200+ goals. Yeah, that's realistic.
