Nintendo 64 DD?
 

Did the nintendo 64 Disk Drive ever come out
in Japan? I can find some info on it
but its just like specs.
No sites are selling it and there are no auctions
on ebay for it. One site claimed that a sim city
and f-zero game susposedly came out in
july 2000?

Yes, the 64DD came out. I have one. You can also find it on Ebay pretty easily and often.

I got my directly in Japan, not off Ebay though. Paid $50 brand new with all the games =)

How is this thing? It never sounded good enough to me to justify the cost even before it was canned for the US, but $50 for everything you can't go wrong. I was thinking of trying it for the mario paint game but I have Photoshop so I decided not to ;). The other thing that sounded sorta cool was the F-Zero track editor, I love F-Zero, wonder what the update was about.

Edit: Oh yeah, I just read those articles and it reminded me that Earthbound 2 was supposed to come out for the DD. Too bad on that, earthbound was cool, lots of weird people and humor.

I'm hoping for a Gamecube Earthbound (Ness is in Smash bros. melee!)

Actually it's still in the box and I haven't opened it up yet. Went through a long process to get it too. =) Oh well, here's the story...

About a year and a couple months ago, I went to Japan hoping to finally pick myself up a system. Only one place had it, and it was just on display and not for sale. Turns out that Nintendo and Randnet stopped selling these at retail stores and that it could only be ordered directly through Randnet. Randnet is the ISP service that was linked to the 64DD. Either buying it in a store or through Randnet resulted in a sign up process for service.

Through Randnet you could pay a montly fee of $25 and you'd have to commit yourself for a year. At $25, you got the network service plus the system and all the games, plus any games that got released as they would send you them as soon as they were available. So since this was my only way, and me being a big Nintendo fan and collector, I decided to jump on it. Fortunately I have friends there since it was only valid in Japan. So at a year, it would have costed $300.

Now comes the kicker, a month later they announced that the service and the system wasn't doing so well and that they would stop taking orders immediately. They also said that nobody would be billed for service starting the end of the next month, but the service would continue on until either January or Feburary of 2001. Sure enough, at the end of November, that was the last time I got billed, which means I only paid $50 since I only was aruond for two months of service.

Finally, since it was at my friend's place, and I was in no hurry to get it, I had him hold on to it until I needed something else shipped to me. I tried to have it sent to me when the PS2 Linux Kit came out but unfortunately that didn't go smoothly and I only ended up having the Linux Kit sent at the time because of the way it was packaged. So finally, since I went back in September, I picked it up about a year after I had ordered it. Thus, that's how I got the system for $50 and all the games and how it sits unopened. =)
