Question concerning a Resident Evil Code Veronica puzzle

Has anyone solved the puzzle about the 7 paintings WITHOUT looking at cheats? I mean... jesus. Just how the hell were you supposed to figure that one out?

i can't remember if it was a file or it was on the largest painting, but it gives you the order of which buttons to push in sequence.

Yeah, I solved that puzzle without looking at a guide or anything. There was a letter/document that you find that gives you clues as to the order of the paintings. Example:
Spoiler:
The document talks about the Ashford family tree, and the first person mentioned was Veronica, a woman. I'm not too sure (because it's been a while since I've solved that puzzle), but there was only one painting with a woman in it, so you push the button on that painting. Then it goes on and on and you have to follow the clues. Example: The document said something like "[Insert Ashford ancestor's name here] passed down the family tea cups to [Insert another ancestor's name], who had twins." So, you look for the portrait of an old man with tea cups (or WHATEVER the document said -- I don't remember exactly) and push the button on his painting. Then you look for the picture of a man holding twins and push the button on his picture, etc etc etc.

yeah, you gotta look at the family tree thingy... it tells you exactly what order to put them in.

OT, but did anyone else notice how much RE:CV paid homage to the original RE? I was playing it today and the part where
Spoiler:
you're walking down a hall that looks strikingly similar to the hall in RE1 (the one where the dogs popped out) and that huge worm busts through the wall twice, just like the dogs in RE1.
Not to mention the painting puzzle discussed in this thread (it's like the painting puzzle in RE1). Just thought I'd mention it.

uhhh, that's the point man. there's the "replica" manor that's modeled after the 1st mansion in the 1st game.
