EA Lands DTS Sound

Sounds Good: DTS Interactive audio technology will be featured in EA's NHL 2002 and SSX Tricky for PlayStation 2.

Both titles will incorporate SurroundSoundScape audio technology to bring movie theater audio quality to the experience. Other EA titles for PlayStation 2 with SurroundSoundScape and DTS Interactive will be announced later this year.

"We are proud to have successfully developed the technology that will allow us to bring the leading technology in audio systems to our games," said Murray Allen, EA's VP of post production. "The increased sound experience brings the audio feature of the game up to the graphic quality level that is now established, the two together provide a fully immersive feel to the game."

It has also been announced that Jax and Daxter will be in DTS sound as well. It's about time companies start taking full advantage of sound in video games! :)

I was under the impression that the PS2 couldn't have 5.1 playback ingame, only during cutscenes?

I think that ingame 5.1 is one of the the things X-Box is touting as an exclusive feature.

I could be, and probably am, wrong though.

SmackDaddy, the PS2 was not supposed to be able to do 5.1 ingame, but EA came up with a way to do it, and they are going to license the technology to other game companies.

To make things a bit more clearer, Dolby Digital 5.1 is evidentally impossible to do on-the-fly on the PS2. However, DTS 5.1 can evidentally be done on-the-fly. In my experience in movies, I have always found the DTS track to be a bit cleaner, but a bit teenier. This is great news for the PS2 in my opinion.

Wow this is awesome news! Not even Dolby Digital they are bringing out the guns and going with DTS. This will be interesting to play as the games I've played with 5.1 are a little inconvienent even if its for a cool effect. I mean when my receiver kicks to DD 5.1 mode the volume is a lot lower compared to the normal setting I usually have when I'm playing, so during cutscenes I always have to turn the volume up to reference level to get an even sound on all speakers. And after the cutscene my receiver changes back to the default sound setting because there's no 5.1 signal and the volume is way loud.

If the gameplay is DTS as well that means no sound mode changes, yes!!!

They had to do something to compete with the XBox. Most every game at the XBox's launch will have on the fly Dolby Digital Sound thoughout the entire game.
