Are there any shows you think have poor choices of timeslots where they run up against another show you really like?

My biggest gripe is Dark Angel being on the same time as Buffy/Angel (I forget which one now, but I like Buffy/Angel more so end up watching them instead). If Dark Angel was on a different time I'd definitely watch it, but unfortunately they are similar shows and I think appeal to many of the same people. This is just bad scheduling by Fox (Dark Angel) if you ask me, since the WB shows are actually produced by Fox also.

The other one I get upset about is Grounded for Life being on during Ed. Both are great shows and it sucks missing one for the other. I end up channel flipping which gets really frustrating/aggravating after a while.

Just a few (both on Wednesday):

South Park/Law & Order
Jack & Jill/West Wing

Yeah that whole Dark Angel/Angel deal doesn't make sense (especially them have similar titles).

It's called competition. It's a new concept in television. :)

Yeah but when 20th C Fox produces both shows, and Fox-TV schedules one show to cut into the ratings of the other (and calling it by an almost identical name), you would think they would know better.

Scott: There's more to the Dark Angel/Angel thing than mere competition. Like Jeraden said, Fox produces both Angel and Dark Angel and for whatever reason, they decided to take a similarly named show aimed at the same crowd as Buffy and pitted it against another one of their own products.

Anyway, from TV Guide Online earlier this week:

Joss Whedon — creator and executive producer of the WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel — has a bone to pick with 20th Century Fox, the studio behind Angel as well as the freshman smash Dark Angel. Fox's decision to pit Dark's sci-fi siren Jessica Alba against vampire sire David Boreanaz on Tuesday nights has resulted in a steep ratings decline for the Buffy spinoff, and Whedon's out for blood.
"The fact that they put [Dark Angel] on opposite a show that they produce, thereby hurting it, shows that they really don't care," Whedon tells TV Guide Online. "Their big picture is clearly so big that whatever I think and whatever I am doing doesn't matter, and I resent that. But I am not the 'Big Picture Guy.' I'm just making my shows."

Marc Berman, TV analyst for Mediaweek, feels Whedon's pain, calling Fox's scheduling of Dark Angel "one of the less logical moves last fall." In fact, he believes that both shows are suffering. "Although Dark Angel has carved a comfortable niche for itself, had Angel not been in the competitive mix, Dark Angel's ratings might even be stronger. By splitting the young adult audience, Angel is down and Dark Angel is probably not the real hit it should be."

Despite his frustration, Whedon insists that he has not asked Fox to move Dark Angel to another night next fall. "I don't deal with that," he says. "I have no control over that. I am not someone that can say, 'Work your schedule.'

"Ultimately I am not going to ask them to do anything," he adds. "As long as I get to make my shows, the people who want to watch them will."

Adding another wrinkle to the debate — not to mention Whedon's forehead — is Alba's so-called alias. "I watch [Dark Angel], and her name is not 'Angel,' and she's not an angel, so why the [expletive] would they call it that?" he seethes. A 20th Century rep was unavailable for comment.

Female foes notwithstanding, Whedon points out that the "basic core [of Angel's audience] has stayed there." But another menace looms: If 20th Century makes good on its threat to relocate Buffy to another network (it's currently embroiled in heated renewal talks with the WB), Angel
could lose its cushy lead-in. Whedon isn't alarmed, though. Assures the auteur: "I believe Angel's audience will [stick with us] wherever Buffy is." — Michael Ausiello
(Edit -- whoops, I thought I had copied/pasted the relevant part of the article, but missed a bit...)

Back when they had Monday Night Football/WCW Nitro/WWF Raw. Those were three great shows

Sopranos and X-Files being on opposite one another is a real bitch for me. I end up taping X-Files at 9 on Sundays (because who know when Fox will re-run the episodes) and then taping Sopranos on one of its multiple re-runs.

I never thought I'd say this: but thank God for the multiple re-runs of the Sopranos. Now, if they were ALL in widescreen - then I'd be much, much happier.

Friday nights with TLG, The Fugitive, Gary & Mike and Farscape. Thankfully Sci-Fi airs Farscape twice or that would mean more taping for an otherwise busy night. I am just waiting for the bashing to come in about these shows but everyone has a taste of their own.

Survivor/Friends/Gilmore Girls.

Watch one and tape the other two

elektra 04-06-01 07:51 PM

I like both Angel and Dark Angel and it stinks that they're on opposite each other. The Lone Gunmen and Farscape being on opposite each other is a bummer. The only other issue is X-Files, Nikki and Sopranos. I don't really get to wathc the Sopranos much. At least the first season is on DVD and I can catch what I missed. Hopefully the next season will come out soon.

"West Wing" and "The Job"

"Dawson's Creek" and "Ed" -- I always end up recording "Dawson's" but when I get together with my friends for Wednesday-night TV (we really are just a sad group of people) -- there is always a war to decide what show to watch. The last month and half "Dawson's" has been in reruns so its been easy, but now that it's all new eps for the rest of the season...whew.

The show (Dawson's) has been sucking for the last two years anyway so I don't even know why I care, but it's one of those stupid Wednesday-night traditions, a campy teen-soap at 8:00...and its something I've been doing since 90210 moved from Thursday to Wednesday like 8 years ago...and there is no better teen show (a la the great "Dawson's switch in '98) to switch to. "Ed" is so good though, I might just switch to that full-time next season.

Canis Firebrand 04-09-01 06:22 AM

I have a few of these . It especially sucks since they moved Fraiser back to Tuesday from Thursday. At least they moved Will & grace to thursday.

My overlaping shows are

Tueday I miss a lot.

I watch Buffy and Angel. Usually end up missing That 70's show and Titus. Also Fraiser. At least Tivo now lets you have the abilty to tape things that are on at the same times, esp if one is a repeat.

Thursday I miss survivor because I watch Friends and Will and Grace.

Geofferson 04-09-01 09:41 AM

This always seems to happen to me. Last year the big choice was Harsh Realm vs. Now and Again. I chose Harsh Realm, so at least I was able to enjoy my decision for 3 weeks! This year it is between Dawson's Creek and Ed (yes, I admit that I actually watch Dawson's Creek).

elektra 04-09-01 10:19 AM

bodai - I had the same problem. I wanted to watch both and because now and again started first, I started watching that. Then I taped Harsh Realm and the weekend I was sitting down to watch it, it gets cancelled. As a result, CBS pulled the plug on a show that would have been from Chris Carter and Joe Straczynski.

I agree, now I watch x-files and catch the rerun of Sopranos at midnight.

most of the commedies on abc overlap with 2 other shows. ex spin city, darma and greg, drew carrey,
jag, that 70's show, ST: Voyager, west wing, fugative, lone gunmen, nash bridges, law and order svu, I'm sure there are others

Jnuke 04-10-01 12:00 PM

Law & Order / South Park
Simpsons / Inside the Actor's Studio

I think those are the only two choices I occasionally have to make these days.
