Okay, pals and gals, I've been watching Trek from the gitgo and I have one question. I've read where the new series they're developing is going to be 100 years before Kirk and Spock. I'm thinking, okay, this could be cool. Then I read how T'Pau is going to be on this show. I'm thinking, okay, she could be an interesting character. Then I'm remembering my Trek history. I knew that she was the only Vulcan to turn down a seat on the Federation Council, but wasn't Spock the first Vulcan to serve in Starfleet?

Sounds like they're retooling history again, just for the possibility of ratings.

I don't remember that ever being mentioned in the original series or films.

Just cause she's on the ship doesn't mean she's serving in Starfleet. Kira wasn't a starfleet officer but she was an officer on DS9.

 An inconsistancy in Star Trek  We wouldn't want to have that now would we :p For the record I seem to recall hearing something about Spokc being the first too, although they could do the "she's on loan" thing. Are they even going to have THE Starfleet in this one?

Red Dog 03-27-01 10:40 AM

As I posted in the other Star Trek (original series) thread, I never understood why in a United Federation of Planets (with dozens of members), only humans manned the Enterprise and other starships. (Of course I realize the series budget is the real reason, but I wanted to know the Trekkie reason).

Hey, didn't you ever see the Animated Series? Weren't there other weird aliens in that?

Of course, but did you notice how we never saw those species again in the movies or in the later series. It doesn't cost extra to draw an alien as opposed to a human. It costs a lot more to use makeup to turn a human into an alien.

Actually, the reason was not only budget, but mainly because Rodenberry wanted the aliens to look human in order to stress people of different races getting along. The main way he deviated, of course, was anytime you had a hostile alien, they would always make it weird and creepy becasue thats the old sci fi way.

The next show being a prequel show is nothing but rumor, based on one character casting sheet. It is actually supposed to be a studio plant to keep viewers off the trail of the new series plotlines. i'm pretty sure they officially debunked it, but arent making a big deal out of it becasue they would rather keep people off track.

Perhaps there were Federation ships with mostly non-humanoid crew to cope with different environments apropos of breathing, gravity etc.

But talking of inconsistencies, what is the Star Trek universe reason for the Klingons changing from "oriental" types to Worff-types? And the "we don't talk about that period of our history" explanation won't cut it!!

Yeah but all the other Federation ships they encountered seemed to have similar crew complements. Also, whenever they docked at a space station - same thing...all humans.

As for the Klingon issue, there was a thread a week or two ago about that. Do a forum search on it.

My idea for a high-ratings Trek would be Star Fleet Academy, with lots of good-looking youngsters as cadets, on training missions and involved in soapy subplots. Sort of a 90210 in space (or more accurately, like Voerhoven's "Starship Troopers").

Sorry I didn't get back in here sooner. I guess I didn't expect this many responses.

I'm willing accept the fact that the character may not be in Starfleet, but on board in some sort of ambassadorial status. I'm also going on this being rumor and not "set in stone."

As Star Trek was my introduction to Science Fiction, I will always check out something new. However, on the same line of thinking, just because it's call Star Trek, doesn't mean I'll follow along blindly and ignore bad writing, plot holes the size of the moon, or little to no character development. I expect more from them.

I'd have to back track some of my info on Trek, but I thought it was stated that Spock was the first Vulcan to serve in fleet. If I find anything concrete on this, I'll post it here.

Ditto, which is why I haven't watched many episodes of Voyager in the past few years (but why I refused to miss an episode of the last two years of DS9).

It seems like a tradition that a character from the previous show makes an appearance on the first episode of the new show...
DeForest Kelly in Star Trek The Next Generation
Patrick Stewart in Star Trek Deep Space Nine and
Armin Shimmerman in Star Trek Voyager

Assuming this Prequel rumor is true (which I don't think it is), I wonder who would guest on the first episode or it? Someone from Voyager? Someone from the original series? What does everyone think?

Re: the Klingon thing - it has something to do with Plastic Surgery of an entire race. Do a search for Klingon in the dvdtalk threads and I'm sure you'll run across my whole huge explanation. To tell the truth, I only remember bits and pieces of it at the moment.

Re: T'Pau - She never sat on a Federation Council seat, but it's possible when she was a young and stupid Vulcan she actually helped to pilot a Federation Ship. Haven't you ever done anything stupid as a teenager? ;)

Speaking of T'Pau, I heard her song on an 80s station yesterday. It wasn't bad, for mindless dance music.

I need a proof. I have read Offical Star Trek Magazine saying that there's alot of rumors about the plots, he said most of the rumor aren't accurate. As you said you read somewhere, I would want to see that.

benedict 03-28-01 11:40 AM

mllefoo, I'll certainly check out that old thread!

It is quite weird because, although I'd never located an "official" explanation, in a fairly recent discussion with a workmate had postulated that all starfarers had to undergo plastic surgery as some kind of defence or espionage ploy! Great minds, eh?

HEY! I liked 'China In Your Hand' - it was a top tune.

elektra 03-30-01 10:55 AM

McHawkson - scifi.com/scifiwire I believe is where I read it. Also, check out some of the info on http://www.startrek.com.

If you read some of my later posts here, I did state that I also believe them to be RUMORS and not fact. I don't believe there is anything official yet.
