I have a pal who is a big Lost in Space fan. I didn't see many of those shows but think it was one of the earliest I ever saw when it was syndicated/repeated in the UK.

Probably my favourite from childhood is Doctor Who, notwithstanding the creaky sets and poor special effects.

But there were one or two other short-lived UK shows that I saw when I was very young that weren't repeated during the 80s or 90s e.g. The Tomorrow Children (kids with futuristic equipment and telekinetic powers), Tarot: Ace of Wands (psychic magician-type and his crew of helpers) and various others whose names now elude me.

Anyone else out there have any low-budget favourites from years gone by?

<small>I sort of wish they'd (re)show The Magician (Bill Bixby) of which I only saw one episode but which intrigued me considerably!

I forgot about the Tomorrow Children! I loved that show -- though I don't remember where I saw it here in the States. I loved UFO & Space 1999 too, while I'm being all Anglo...

My faves stateside were Land of the Giants and The Time Tunnel!

Not sure that any of these fit your "low-budget" criteria -- but then, studio-bound shot-on-tape SciFi was pretty much a Brit-only tradition, right?

Hmm, so many to choose from. My favorite sci fi shows as a kid (apart from star trek) were Space: 1999, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, The Man From Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, and Quark. There was also a fun show about a guy who was struck by lightning and suddenly started shooting electricity out the end of his fingers.

Of course, I also really loved Wizards and Warriors, but it isn't sci fi.

I always watched Dr.Who and Misfits of Science.

Battlestar Galactica was my fav. Of course, I also watched the Twilight Zone cause back then it was creepy and never made any sense. Go figure.

Sylvester McCoy as Doctor Who was really funny.
Also He-man, Ulysses cartoon and The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy.

:) That is a question worthy of me! No, I messed up: it <i>was</i> Tomorrow People but the "people" were children!

Lost in Space seems to be a particular favourite! Perhaps that was what they were thinking of when they made the film although several people have told me that it didn't match their memories of the series....

I've always been a big Sci Fi fan, so, of course I faithfully watched (and loved) shows like Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Battlestar Gallactica, and Land of the Giants.

But, the two shows that stand head and shoulders above the rest (Star Trek excluded, of course;)) were The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits (the original series). What I wouldn't give to have The Outer Limits on DVD...

During the summers as a child, USA would show Lost in Space and Land of the Giants every weekday from 9 a.m. (cst) to 11 a.m. I was set man :) I also loved watching Misfits of Science whenever it came on primetime (although I don't remember too much about it now except the characters had different cool powers).

Wasn't The Tommorow People a show on Nickelodeon or something? A group of kids that it showed teleporting to and from beaches and this alien spaceship very often if I remember correctly.

I loved the War of the worlds TV series, also loved Misfits of Science.

Umm, kind of like some episodes of Quantum Leap.

I've not checked imdb but was wondering if anyone had made a features film of Land of the Giants given its popularity - and the fact the The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits were both relaunched in the 90s.

One I forgot earlier, and which I enjoyed in the UK as a kid, was The Invaders! Both that and LOTG were kind of typical of the cold war. As I recall the authorities in teh LOTG were pretty controlling and The Invaders could perhaps been seen as the "red menace"!

Funny how so many series followed the format of The Fugitive e.g. The Invaders (of course) and later The Incredible Hulk. Someone on the run ends up in a new town each week and has an adventure. I suppose that is a natural format but there were a good number of shows that followed it very closely....

Well, I grew up near the Canadian border--cable wasn't available until I was in Junior High, and we couldn't get clear reception of American stations other than PBS, so my favorites (besides Trek)were Dr. Who, Space:1999, Ultraman (good ol' CFCF 12 out of Montreal), and.............THE STARLOST!

Does ANYONE else out there remember Starlost? I haven't seen the show in probably 25 years, but from what I remember, it made the FX from Dr. Who look like the Phantom Menace :).

Oh, and how could I forget the animated "Rocket Robin Hood"?! That ruled!!!!

Yeah, I remember Starlost! That was a pretty cool show. I remember playing Starlost with friends. I also enjoyed that Saturday morning show ARK 2.

A short time ago Play.com had a sale on a boxed set of the entire run of The Tomorrow People. I couldn't resist buying it for my nieces and nephews whom I'm hoping will get a big kick of out of it come yuletide. Checking back, I see the set is still on sale @ Play/Sendit/Amazon at a good price.

I've just read that - way back then - a new head of childrens' programming cancelled the projected fourth season of Tarot: Ace of Wands and its replacement was The Tomorrow People.

To get a slight flavour of the succeeding show - which lasted 68 episodes as compared to T:AoW's 46 and had a 90s sequel - you can see the opening & closing titles on YouTube, and doubtless some clips, too.
