I think that OZ on HBO is by far the best show, out doing Sopranos by so much.
Anyway like OZ over Sopranos?

I love them both but I have to say no. However, I have only recently started watching OZ, so that might be a factor. OZ is a great show, but there is nothing uplifting about it. Of course, I realize that it is a show about hard prison life and that is the way things are supposed to be.

I've only seen a few episodes of OZ, and the ones that I have seen were good. But from what I saw I don't think that OZ is better than the Sopranos. I think that I would have to start watching it more to make a final decision.

Yes - in fact - you are.
OZ has no meaning if you didn't watch the show from the very first episode of the very first season. It's simply shank-porn, where you wait around and wait around for someone to either show off their penis or stick somebody in the gut with something sharp.
Sopranos can be picked up anywhere along the way and you'll get something deeper out of the storyline.

I disagree. I started watching OZ a couple months ago. My roommates pointed out a couple of things for me but for the most part, it was easy to get into.
I watched the Sopranos from the beginning. I can't imagine trying to pick up the Sopranos mid-way through.

I love them both as well, I like the Sopranoes a little more but Oz is better than anything else on tv. So HBO must be happy having the two best shows on tv.

You are not the only one! I like the Sopranos, but I am addicted to Oz! I think the show has the best acting and the most interesting characters that I have ever seen on Television. It also has something else the Sopranos doesn't have, good looking naked men (sorry, I couldn't resist mentioning that)!

But then, being a "bear" myself, I tend towards bearish type-guys anyway.

OZ is real good, but Sopranos is a little better. Although I do agree with you have to see it from the start. Also I am very impressed with OZ due to the fact of hard it is to make an episode. I saw a little thing about the show, and sometimes they have as many as 35 speaking parts in one show, and over 80 cast members on the show. A lot to work with so that makes it impressive.

Dumb plot aside, I still have to give "OZ" the edge over "The Sopranos."

That was an interesting, albeit far-fetched concept. I never believed in the rehabilitative explanation for incarceration, so an aging pill could be an adequate punishment. Also, think of the money it would save.

Interesting......
Sopranos is a good show, but I still feel that OZ is byfor the best. Great story each episode. They actually have a full season, unlike Sopranos, showing 4 episodes, then the season is over.
..... Oh yeah, KICK ASS SEASON ENDING!!!

I think Sopranos and OZ are equal at this point...Oz has aired 40 episodes, Sopranos 26...until Sunday comes...

I disagree with that. These shows are also better because they have fewer episodes, and no "fillers" as I call the meaningless episodes on some other shows. It's like a valuable collection, the fewer pieces in the collection, the more valuable each piece is. The "filler" episodes are basically diluting the value of the good episodes, so the show ratings overall go down... Sadly, that happens on most network tv series.
HBO does have to lengthen these seasons though. Too short, IMHO.

I've seen every episode of Oz since the first... I just couldn't get into the Sopranos. Oz is the type of show where I just can't wait until the next episode.

I have been watching both from the first episodes. I feel that Oz just had their weakest season and the Sopranos are coming off their best. The first season of Oz was just about flawless in terms of plot, charactorizations, and season finale. So was this last season of The Sopranos.
I have always prefered Oz because of it's uniqueness. The narrative and the truely emsemble cast make it unlike anything on TV. I have said this before (in Other, not here) but with The Sopranos you know certain things are off-limits, you know Tony is not gonna get wacked, his kids are off limits (violence-wise), etc, etc... With OZ all bets are off. Much like real life no charactor is too important to the show. Oz goes on. I also find the violence much grittier, and realistic. The violence in the Sopranos can't help but remind you of the tons of Mob movies that came before. I think it is the best mob fiction since Goodfellas, but comparing it to Oz hurts it because the genre is a much more well mined feild.

I'm just getting into the Sopranos (Got Season 1 on DVD, and will pick up Season 2 when it comes out) -- and now that I've got HOBO, I'm watching season 3 as it happens. I've seen more episodes of Oz though, and while you do lose some depth and background (e.g. concept behind Em-City, and some of the history which comes up again and again) each episode stands well alone.
As for the Sopranos, I had to limit myself to 1 dvd per sitting -- even as much as I wanted to watch the whole thing at once. It is a great series.
Just checked out the HBO Oz site, and they say that they have no plans to release any of Oz on media, or at present, rebroadcast. It's a shame, because I've missed a few episodes.
Oh well, I guess I can watch the Sopranos while I look forward to season five of Oz (not that I'm complaining )
