The Day After is on Sci-Fi right now. Its one of my favorite movies about what would happen in a nuclear war. Everytime it airs though it reminds me of another movie that came out around the same time. It took place in England and was alot more graphic than the Day After. Does anyone know the name of this movie and if its available on video? I'd really like to see it again.

I would love to see a re-make of The Day After. I remember how much impact and controversy that movie caused when it was first aired, although at the time I was too young to understand what the big deal was.

The movie that came out around the same time is called "Threads" totally realistic. 1984 BBC Movie Banned in Britain. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A653311 I can't believe I missed 'The Day After' I've been wanting to see it for 23 years! :scratch2:

Threads (which is a fantastic movie, BTW), is available on DVD in Region 2:

Ron -- I don't know how you managed to bump up a 5-year old thread, but you can rest assured that you didn't just 'miss' the movie. You can buy/rent The Day After. It's been available on DVD for a while:

Just think: It would have only been 18 years, had you been a member when this thread was originally posted. . .

I never thought The Day After had as much impact as Special Bulletin. The fact that it covered the detination of a bomb in Charleston through news reports in near-real-time made it hit much closer to home.

Special Bulletin..... whats that

Filmmaker 06-15-06 06:37 PM

For those of you desperate to see THE DAY AFTER on TV, or to Tivo it, you do realize it's available for a pittance on DVD, right?

The Valeyard 06-15-06 06:52 PM

Special Bulletin was great. Only thing I didn't like was the constant "This is only a TV Movie" warnings before and after each commecial break. Destroyed what the show was trying to accomplish (that this was a REAL broadcast)

SunMonkey 06-15-06 08:08 PM

How does one even find a thread like this over five years after it was posted?

dstrauss 06-15-06 08:27 PM

I'd love to see Special Bulletin again, last I checked it wasn't available on DVD.

Threads was seriously disturbing. It was so depressing it practically made Day After seem like a romantic comedy.

Special Bulletin was a TV movie aired as if it was a real-time news broadcast about an anti-nuclear group who had built their own nuclear bomb and put it in a boat in Charleston (S.C.) harbor. During the broadcast, a news team lets itself be taken hostage to cover the crisis fron the inside. The news covered the negotiations, the tension in the group, and the sudden raid by a special forces group.

The kicker is that
Spoiler:
after the group is arrested and taken away, a NEST team is sent in to disable the bomb, but it gets out of hand and the bomb detonates, all covered by the original news team.

And yeah, it scared the crap out of me too.

I knew this had to be a 5-year-old thread when it indicated that science fiction was being shown on the Sci Fi Channel.

Now this was a movie that scarred the living shit out of me when I was a Kid. Of course I lived within an hour of Lawrence and Kansas City.
