Gil Gerard (Buck Rogers) has died
 

Gil Gerard's wife just posted a message on his Facebook page (from Gil) saying that his "ride" has come to an end.

I had hoped to meet him at a convention one day, but never got the chance to go to one he was making an appearance at.

Awww, that’s sad to hear. I was really young when Buck Rogers was on, but I do recall watching it. My Mom even got me a Buck Rogers lunch box that I absolutely cherished as a kid.

Never watched Buck Rogers (which is kind of odd given my age and what I liked as a kid), but I did watch Sidekicks with Gil and Ernie Reyes Jr.

Used to catch the reruns as a kid usually on weekends from our rooftop antenna pulling in Channel 20. I knew it wasn't Star Trek but it was a colorful fun show for its time and Gil Gerard was a perfect fit for that old-time serial hero. And that opening with narration from William Conrad still a classic.

And here is another reason why you can’t count on streaming. Buck Rogers is not available on streaming at all. Paid VOD or subscription.

Thankfully I still own my complete series ser on physical media.

Damn. This one hurts.

I love Gil Gerard. In fact, I just got the Buck Rogers Blu Ray set and an halfway through it (excellent quality, by the way). I loved the series then, and I still love it now. Campy, but just a bit. It's played straight enough to hold up as just a silly, fun ride with enough drama and suspense to carry it. And the cast was perfect. No one would have been as good as Buck.

I'll get on finishing that set ASAP.

I remember watching the pilot in theaters and then seeing it again, on TV, a couple weeks later and thinking I was going crazy. Had a crush on both Erin Gray and Pamela Hensley.

same, loved both shows and Erin Grey was a big part of Buck Rogers, that and being a kid starved for Sci-fi after seeing Star Wars... RIP Gil

Oh man, that sucks. :( I watched it every week when I was a kid (even the strange second season where they changed a lot of stuff, they travelled in space and Buck had a bird guy for a new friend), same with Battlestar Galactica, because if you were a Star Wars/sci-fi crazed kid in the late 70s, these were must watches. I even had some of the Mego Buck Rogers action figures. RIP Gil.

Saw the pilot movie at the drive-in April 15, 1979. Was getting married in May and that was the day took possession of the house we were going to live in. Went to the drive-in to celebrate. Never watched the TV show, except once. I was in the hospital Jan 1981 with nothing but three local channels to watch. I saw part of an epic 3 parter. Had the bird guy in, Had something to do with mysterious emerald green artifact.

I loved that show as a kid. Great memories. Don't remember him in anything else.

I never watched Buck Rogers when I was a kid.

It was either up against something else that got priority in my home (like Dallas), but I think I rejected it out of hand for being not-Star Wars. Might have been the latter, I do remember thinking that robot was annoying and not cool like Threepio and Artoo. :lol:

Always meant to at least catch a few episodes on the Sci-Fi Channel or something, but never got around to it.

I'm not sure if it's a false memory, but I think I saw this at the drive-in. Or I may have just seen the trailer at the drive-in? Or shit, maybe it was the re-edit of the Battlestar Galactica pilot, which received a theatrical release in Canada before the series aired on TV. Damn my age addled memory, but I was only 10 years old at the time.

My son and I got to meet Gil and Erin Gray at a small convention here in Birmingham, Alabama, a place that never has basically any celebrities come to it that I care to see but I had to see them. I was a massive Buck Rogers TV fan as a kid and watched it religiously when it first aired and anytime it showed up on reruns.

So anyway, my son (who was around 4 at the time) dressed up as Robin (of Robin and Batman fame) and we got to meet them both. I handed my record over to Gil and he laughed when I asked if he sees many of those. He then started grinning and immediately burst into song, singing "Far beyond the world I've known, far beyond my time." He seemed to get a kick out of and so did I.

Later I got to ask him a question in the Q&A session. I asked why the second season stunk so bad (hopefully I asked better than that) but he didn't seem so happy then. :lol:

I have the record hanging on my wall. I regret not paying the extra money now and getting a photo with both of them with my son in it. But it just seemed like too much money at the time. My son is 21 now so that had to be around the 2009 or so time. Seems like forever now.

Always loved the artwork on this.

Erin Gray will be 76 in about three weeks. She's as old as my dad.
