RIP Hulu App

Disney is sunsetting the standalone Hulu app and it will be totally integrated into Disney +.

Re: RIP Hulu App

I haven’t tried the live features in the Disney+ app. Hopefully it’s better than the live functionality of the Hulu app.

As of now, I’d give the Hulu app about a C+ / B- in terms of handling live content - especially the FOX channel programming during sports broadcasts. When the “ad” box suddenly appears during a baseball game for example, it spoils the inning since it lets the viewer know the 3rd out occurred before you actually see it. Hulu Live has a one minute delay.

There are also some buffering issues when launching channels and DVR programming, despite my wired 250 speed internet. Only happens when starting the program, not during it.

I actually posted this news in the Hulu thread in Streaming Talk. But, it was only a matter of time before Disney would want to make Disney+ a all-in-one service and cut out redundancy.

Disney is starting a standalone ESPN streamer that will eventually include the NFL Network.

FOX is planning some kind of streaming service with Fox News live.

This could encourage A LOT more cord cutting, as ESPN and Fox News are two of the most popular cable channels.

I expect that this will finally kill my free Hulu subscription that’s bundled with Spotify Premium…

The point of cord cutting was to get content without having to pay so much to cable companies. But now you have to subscribe to multiple streaming services to get that content. They've just shifted the problem to a different platform.

Also to escape the ever increasing ad load. Advertisers had no choice but follow to the streaming services and it is getting more and more expensive for the ad free plans.

People wanted ala carte for so long. Well, now you have it (to an extent), with added features like being able to watch programs on demand. I'm not sure what else people were expecting.

As a Hulu Live user, this has become my default app. Not looking forward to the change. I'll have to decide if I want to move to Fubo or swap to YTTV.

So like... is Alien: Earth or The Bear going to be on Disney+? How are they going to manage children's stuff and more adult fare?

They already are. Hulu content has been on D+ app for a while now. I assume it will continue to be separated but advertised on the main page.

Re: RIP Hulu App

Yeah I would guess Hulu content would still be a separate upcharge (unless they plan on raising the cost for every subscriber which seems crazy)

Oh OK. I thought that was just if you have the bundle, which we do

Years ago, I purchased discounted Hulu gift cards on Ebay. I think it may have been $25 for a $100 gift card, and I purchased quite a few and applied to my account. I am still using that credit and the online account won't even tell me when it expires. A few years ago, a customer service rep calculated that I was paid up till 2027 or 2029.

Then I got a free Hulu base subscription through Sprint, that was later converted to T-Mobile, so I have 2 Hulu base accounts that I stil use, even though I have a family member that allows me to share their Disney Plus subscription.

I'll be curious what happens to them, Ideally I would like to convert my T-Mobile Hulu account to a Netflix subscription, but I my plan was grandfathered from the Sprint merger and it seems like both T-Mobile and Verizon are trying to get away from plans that are bundled with streaming services, probably becasue of rising costs.

The same way Disney+ has been doing it in countries that don't have Hulu (i.e. everywhere except the US and Japan) for a number of years now. ;)

They are... I still have the ad free Disney Bundle and Apple Music included in my Verizon plan. It also includes Apple Arcade but that's being stripped out next month. No loss there as I didn't use it at all.

Verizon keeps raising the price here and there on the plan but the math still is in favor of keeping it. Heck they even gave me a special offer back in the spring that I could keep my plan and still get $1000 for my older 13 Pro.

I'm starting to think I should just go back to cable or DirectTV.

You have to continue to pay for Hulu as a separate or part of a bundle subscription to continue to get it. Some people might think that Disney+ is just going to "merge" with Hulu.

I pay for D+ and Hulu as a bundle for $19.99/month, which is a lot cheaper than having them separately. But, I guess I should start to segue to using Hulu within D+ more now.

and there is adult lock controls.

Disney has been trying to get me to merge my Hulu and Disney accounts (I canceled D+ last year), but I use different emails for them. I guess this’ll have to come to a head soon.

I think people have already, or will be able to, make peace with the idea that there is just going to be A LOT of stuff that you are NEVER going to watch. So you find the one or two streamers that give you what you really want every day and go with that, and forget about the rest.

Yeah it will be similar to Paramount+ with Showtime were the Showtime content is an add-on cost. They are just consolidation the distribution to Disney+ instead of having two apps. They already have the infrastructure in place. It's just a matter of deprecating the Hulu app and replacing it with the Disney+.

Even better, just subscribe, binge, cancel, and go to the next one, then come back after a few months after the initial subscription has more content you want to watch. Unless you have kids, then you just bite the bullet and sigh.
