This is even tougher for me than sitcoms: I mean you have every Star Trek Series, Buffy, Breaking Bad, the Shield, the Wire, 24, ER, Mad Men, West Wing, Gilmore Girls, Fargo, the Sopranos, Oz, Dr. Who, X-Files, Twin Peaks, the first half of GoT,...

But my list will probably at least include Friday Night Lights.

I haven't watched much television, so I've hardly seen any of shows that other people listed. My choice for best drama is "I, Claudius."

I like "The Prisoner" and "The X-Files."

There is someone here who hasn't watched TV since Bill Clinton was president.

So he would be pretty useless in this topic. ;)

I'd really like to add some from earlier decades, but have you tried to watch a straight Drama from before the 21st Century? They're weird and stilted and corny. I used to love Hill Street Blues, St Elsewhere and LA Law, but they're almost unwatchable by today's standards.

OK, putting them in order is almost impossible, so off the top of my head...

The Shield
Better Call Saul
Breaking Bad

I'm having a hard time other than that. There are plenty of genre shows that can be heavy on the drama (Babylon 5, Buffy, Angel, Stargate Atlantis, Star Treks Nex Gen, DS9, and Enterprise, etc), but I don't really put them in the straight Drama category. Nor would I put some of my other favorites like Boston Legal, Hawaii Five-0 (new), Castle, etc, as they have either a heavy dose of comedy, action, or both. That's what makes this so hard.

Deadwood
Band of Brothers (not sure this counts, probably a mini-series)
House
The Wire
Justified

This is hard because to me, so many have really hard drop offs at a certain point. Rescue Me, Sopranos, and GoT have amazing seasons, but overall just didnt hold up for the duration

The Wire:
The greatest show ever created. Gets better every time.

The Shield:
My absolute favorite . Perfect ending.

Breaking Bad:
Fantastic, even if the resolution was a slight letdown

Better Call Saul:
Unbelievable that this would be so good, even if the final season was a step down in quality.

The X-Files:
It's The X-Files!

My top 5 change with my mood. The Shield and Breaking Bad are set in stone for me, but The West Wing, NYPD Blue, The Wire, OZ, Mad Men, TNG, Game of Thrones could switch places with the others.
