DC's Creature Commandos (Max) -- animated series -- premieres 12/5/24

The “Jim Lee & Friends” panel at San Diego Comic-Con included an exclusive first look at the upcoming Max Original adult animated series CREATURE COMMANDOS, debuting this December on Max. President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Jim Lee welcomed a surprise greeting from filmmaker and DC Studios Co-Chair and CEO James Gunn, who wanted the fans in the room to be the first in the world to see an official teaser for the seven-episode series.

Logline: CREATURE COMMANDOS tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option.

Cast: Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Credits: CREATURE COMMANDOS is written and executive produced by James Gunn. Based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation; additional executive producers include Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register; Rick Morales serves as a supervising producer.

Well, that looks fun. I know Rick Flag, Sr. crosses over into the live action Superman and Weasel was in The Suicide Squad, but I wonder if any of the other Creature Commandos will make the leap into live action.

James Gunn clarified and made it official that Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is the first DC Studios release.

So... Creature Commandos is instead the first official DCU release under the DC Studios banner.

I'm still curious how season 2 of Peacemaker will address the JL cameos at the end of season 1. I also wonder how old Rick Flag Sr. is supposed to be in these shows, given that Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag Jr) is 44 and Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr) is 59. Did Sr become a dad at 15?

This show is pretty damn good. What The Suicide Squad should have been.

I liked the first two episodes of this quite a bit. I think G.I. Robot is my favorite character so far. Definitely going to keep on watching.

I think he said in the first episode he became a dad at age 18, so not too much of a difference.

So...does 2021's The Suicide Squad now count as canon since it was from Gunn and they addressed events from it in this series? While I personally like Gunn's rather quirky approach , I don't know if his style is going to go over too well with the casual comic book movie fan.

Pretty good so far. I love that it's taking a huge piss at Incels/Manosphere fucksticks.

I saw some dude online asking why the The Bride, The Monster, and the Doctor all had British accents...as if that's anything new. My favorite answer someone posted was, "Universal Monsters Translators" which too me was a clever response.

I hate the way that show licensing works in Canada, things seem random sometimes. CraveTV has most HBO and Max original shows but for some stupid reason not this one, it's on some stupid service I don't have and don't really want. Ugh, I really wanted to see this. Maybe I'll wait until all the episodes are released and get a free trial for the channel they are on up here.

I'm stuck watching breakdown videos until an eventual physical release,

but am glad this is well liked. I am really hoping James Gunn knocks his DCU out of the park.

Viola Davis is a brilliant film actress who seems to absolutely suck at voice acting. I've heard more convincing line readings in porn.

Cast because she's a name actress who they can splash across the marquee. It kind of ruined the run DC's animated films had going over a decade ago because they started picking random Hollywood actors for voice roles instead of more veteran voice actors.

She plays the same character in Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker: Amanda Waller.

Her voicing the character in the animated series fulfills Davud Zaslov’s, Gunn’s, and Peter Safrans’ promise that the same actor will play the same character in the new DCU. Regardless of medium. Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Jason Momoa, and Xolo Maridueña are also confirmed to migrate from the old DCEU to the new DCU. Most will play the same characters they played before, although it is unknown if Momoa stays as Aquaman or becomes Lobo.

I understand why. I just think she's lousy in this particular show because of poor voice acting.

Well to be honest. Even in live action, Viola Davis does sound like she a monotone AI bot. About the only dialogue with range she had was when she yells in scenes. And even then it sounds bad.

Weirdly. The Japanese anime off shoot of Suicide Squad: Isekai uses her likeness. It is the only character who shares the likeness of the US cast. And that dancing end credits is just strange as hell.

Re: DC's Creature Commandos (Max) -- animated series -- premieres 12/5/24

Wow, this is really something. Saw it listed on Max and wasn't overly interested, as I lost interest in Harley Quinn after the second season and didn't even make it to the second episode of Kiteman. But this is very well done. Good characters, great writing. The flashback scenes in particular are really compelling.

James Gunn is DC's Dave Filoni, which is what they have sorely needed since, well, ever since the MCU started. I know he's done with Disney, but would love to see him do something with Star Wars.

I never liked her as Waller in the first place. Of course, I don't really care for the character at all, but that's just me.

I think you know that doesn't matter in movies and on tv shows

Looks like some of the events from this show specifically that war in Bosnarovia and Gorilla Grodd will be playing some part in Superman

I know actors play younger/older all the time. But, unless it's flashbacks or time travel, you usually don't see two similarly aged actors playing parent/child. Granted, it's doubtful we'll ever see them onscreen together (for obvious reasons), so it's really just a weird nitpick that gets at me.

I'm really enjoying the series so far, but I don't know if this style will translate well to live action if Gunn is taking the same approach to Superman. Random acts of goofiness mixed with mayhem work for me, but casual audiences may find it off putting.

I think Mr. Phosphorus and Frankenstein are definitely the series MVPs.

This definitely has a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe. I'm guessing that's why his Superman is packed with other DC heroes and explains why Guy Gardner is his Green Lantern.

The most recent ep. was definitely going for GOTG with its final shot. I just hope Gunn doesn't push it too far in Superman. The JSA or whomever the group in it don't need to be walking around in slo-mo to some Beastie Boys song.

This is supposed to be official canon of Gunn's DCU, so I don't think that's Thorne from BTAS, even though the design was clearly based on him.

I wanted to like this more than I did but despite some cool characters it felt kind of brutally dark and cynical, and not in a cathartic way. Didn’t care for the whole princess/Circe arc and while I’m all for violence the kind of gratuitous glee they took in mowing down soldiers felt… excessive. I’d give it a B-, but liked The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker a lot more.
