For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!

Bluey is an Australian animated preschool television series which premiered on ABC Kids on 1 October 2018. The program was created by Joe Brumm and is produced by Queensland-based company Ludo Studio. It was commissioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation, with BBC Studios holding global distribution and merchandising rights. The series made its premiere on Disney Junior in the United States and is released internationally on Disney+. But unlike many kids shows that parents have to suffer through watching over and over again, Bluey is a special breed that succeeds in being a true “family” show with wide appeal, even to those without children: The New York Times named ‘Sleepytime’ one of the best TV episodes of 2020, and it has previously been described as “the best kids’ show of our time” by New York Magazine. https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkgg...review-bombing Synopsis - The show follows Bluey, an anthropomorphic six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy who is characterised by her abundance of energy, imagination and curiosity about the world. The young dog lives with her father, Bandit; mother, Chilli; and younger sister, Bingo, who regularly joins Bluey on adventures as the pair embark on imaginative play together. Other characters featured each represent a different dog breed. Overarching themes include the focus on family, growing up and Australian culture. The program was created and is produced in Queensland; its capital city Brisbane inspires the show's setting. Alright parents of young kids. This is the Bluey appreciation thread! Yes for real life. Chattermax and Unicorse are not invited....well okay maybe Unicorse. So practice your best granny impression, get Muffin out of time out and join in. Not a parent? Don't know what a Bluey is let alone a Chattermax? Well Bluey is only the greatest Pre-K family show this side of Sesame Street. Sure on the surface it's all cute and cuddly with animation. But dive in and you'll find heart warming stories about what life is like for the average Australian family. Dealing with surprisingly deep topics with a warmth I've never seen in a TV show. These 7 minute episodes are so incredibly well done. Both the animation and the story telling are just way beyond most children's entertainment. Chilli (mum) and Bandit (dad) are perfect examples of what we strive to be as parents. So what are your favorite Bluey episodes/moments? |

If there is one thing I don’t like about Bluey, it’s that they sometimes give the kids too much power over their parents. There seem to be a lot of episodes where Mom and Dad have to do everything Bluey and Bingo want them to, resulting in the parents going overboard in taking orders from the kids. My kids love Bluey though. |

I prefer the more sentimental episodes. The one where Chilli chased the kids with her dad all over and ended with Chilli sitting on the dock with her dad was good.

On the surface it's just a lot of fun with the kids and grandad being chased by mum but there are themes of aging parents and how we still need them and the passage of time just below the surface. That ending though. :( https://i.imgur.com/YjH1JWA.jpeg Gets me every. single. time. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
My favorite is Sleepytime.
Just an incredibly well put together episode. Creative. Funny. Touching. Holst's Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity really helps a lot with this one though. Like a lot of the best cartoons to save on money they utilize a lot of classical music and this episode uses it in an amazing way. An absolutely beautiful episode. Seriously if you've never seen this episode or even a single Bluey episode, fire up Disney+ right now and watch this 7 min episode. https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/...8e_756x430.png Apparently it was rated the #2 TV episode of all time on IMDB before getting review bombed. https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkgg...review-bombing For a brief moment, a Bluey episode called ‘Sleepytime’ had the #2 spot, right behind ‘Ozymandias,’ the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
The first episode we ever watched was on vacation and it was Camping (where she goes camping and meets a friend who speaks only French). Never heard of the show and we were all mesmerized (this is before it came to Disney Plus, when it first started airing on the Disney Channel). But there are so many more that are now our favorites. For some reason I always remember the one where Bandit is self conscious about playing a whale in front of another dad (who he doesn't even know) at the park.
There's an episode in the latest season where they introduce Chili's sister (and you're like what, where has she been all this time, and they explain it) that had unfortunately been spoiled for me but I think it would've had a bigger impact if not for that. Then there's another recent episode, called Space, which is perhaps the only episode where I was like "what the heck is this episode about." I read an article about what the writers were going for and I'm not sure they landed it exactly but I'm probably not the target audience for it either. Some of the best explanations I've seen about why Bluey crosses over to adults so well for a preschoolers show was made by the "Odd Ones Out" guy: He is spot on about that wretched Caillou. And I do struggle to think of another show for that age bracket that focuses so much on the parents, and not to the detriment of the kids either. There's also a ton of voiceover cameos which are pointed out in the video. A rare late night interview with Bandit and Chili (I think they protect the actual kids who voice Bluey and Bandit because I don't think I've ever seen anything with them): Lastly the stage play is in canon with the show. |

We saw Bluey's Big Play Live on Stage the other day. It was a lot of fun. Really short, only about an hour long, but still a lot of fun. Even my 11 year old liked it and wasn't bored. Interesting that they had Chilli's sister Brandy as a plot point. After hearing so much about the episode with her in it, Onesies, finally seeing it on Disney+ was great. It's really unreal how much subtext is in these 7 minute preschool kids shows.

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
MORE BLUEY EPISODES!!!
If you didn't know yet, they released the final third of the third season recently on Disney+ A really good batch of episodes. Stickbird - really great episode. I wonder what was bothering Bandit, but a great episode to remind us to let go of things that are bothering us and live in the moment. I wonder if the trick of throwing away your worry will work with my kids. Dragon - so we finally get bit of an insight on Chilly's mom.
My wife also has lost her mom a while back so that episode really had her in tears.
This show really is amazing how they capture all the little vignettes of life and parentling in such a succinct manner. Cricket - I really loved this episode. I don't understand a damn thing about cricket but it was very creative way to show how just the little things in your life can have such a big outcome who you become. Challenges really teach you a lot and force you to adapt and get better. I'm also a real sucker for when they show the future and him giving himself in the future a high five was a cool moment. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
I mean every batch is a really good batch of episodes!
|
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
For sure. But it's still amazing to me they keep up the great storytelling through this many episodes.
|
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
When I scroll down season 3 in Disney Plus, my Apple TV always seems to error out and not let us select anything. Is it just me? We've been watching through the little section that has "new Bluey episodes" but it's kind of annoying.

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
New Bluey episode drop!
So... Spoiler:
The show is ending???!!! I didn't hear anything about the special big episode being a series finale? I mean it says go on hiatus but what does that mean? |

That episode did not disappoint. Absolutely loved it. I loved all the connections that happened all throughout the episode. Literally the butterfly effect.

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
What an amazing, amazing episode.
And the point of the episode being you make the best decision you can and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, but you don't know at first still lands, I think. Plus they could have absolutely taken the easy way out once the brother changed his mind, but it was just another layer, then the callback to the coin, the house, and that being the final "sign." Yeah nothing is ever going to work out in real life like that but still really cool. Though I think I"m happiest for Winton's dad (the English Bulldog). That's the kind of longform storytelling I watch Bluey for. Also grandpa Bob finally found himself. And Aunt Brandy's surprise. Man this would be a great finale but I don't want it to be the finale, so maybe I need to think about the message of this episode a little more and realize maybe it's fine either way. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
Oh, and I forgot the other setup to this episode, saving the caterpillar, which sets a ton of stuff in motion in this episode.
|
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
Such a fantastic episode, wife and I were tearing up as the boys enjoyed watching it as well. My son spotted the balloon right away and yelled "greenie!!" They remember it all, the Brandy cameo was great, seeing Bob and Stripe laugh together was awesome. So many great eggs in it.
|
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
That's how I know my family watched some episodes without me, I didn't even remember the balloon... ;)
|
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
I caught a couple of episodes for the first time yesterday. Quite enjoyed them, and of course my kids did as well. I'll have to go back and watch them from the beginning.

SURPRISE EPIDOSE!!
Literally. Shocking everyone, they released one more episode titled Surprise. I tell you what this has been quite the emotional roller coaster this past couple weeks. From them putting the house up on the market, including a for real life listing on a real estate website. To the ultimate 30 minute long episode calling back over the last 3 seasons of Bluey. To this episode seemingly a rather "normal" episode until the last 30 seconds. Spoiler:
It's pretty mind boggling to think that this is a not just a kids show. But a preschool kids show. The level of care that is given in each 9 minute episode is really amazing. It's quite a bit of fun connecting to other parents over this show and seeing how vested we all are in these cartoon talking dogs. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
I mean it was called Surprise.
Also gives the feeling of "hey this show might be ending" but I've heard that that's not true, so happy day. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
While we wait for news about season 4, Bluey is getting 20 minisodes, each about 1-3 minutes long, starting this July.

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
Interesting. My 5 year old was watching Bluey on YouTube kids and it was a series of shorts like about a minute or two long. I thought it was just scenes from the show that were chopped up but it seemed like they were new, specially made. So maybe they are releasing these.

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
The Bluey minisodes will be released in three phases. The first chunk of seven will premiere on July 3 at 12 am PT (3 am ET) on Disney Plus. The first two minisodes of this batch will also premiere to Disney Jr. and Disney Channel on the same day, with the remaining five episodes dropping throughout the "Red, White and Bluey" marathon, which will air on both networks on Fourth of July weekend.
The first batch of Bluey mini-episodes, which are all between one and three minutes in length, are titled as follows: Burger Dog Bingo 3000 Muffin Unboxing Letter Hungry Three Pigs Animals The second batch of short episodes will premiere on the streamer later this year, with the final batch set to debut in 2025. https://www.bluey.tv/blog/bluey-mini...ore-announced/ |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
Very cute low budget single scene minisodes. Don't let the Disney+ runtime fool you. They list them at like 5 minutes each. And the last "episode" is just all of them together.
So I guess we're really going to have to be subsisting on these minisodes until at least the back half of 2025? They're like microdosing us with Bluey minisodes to keep us hooked. |
Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
The new minisodes are out on Disney+ as of today! My kids love Bluey and I must say I've gotten quite addicted myself -biggrin-

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company today announced the first-ever animated feature film for Bluey. The film will premiere in cinemas worldwide in 2027, followed by streaming on Disney+. The movie will also air on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia post-theatrical release. Written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, the film is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios. The film will star vocal talent from series, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, along with music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush. The CG animated film will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith (‘Happy Feet’, ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘The Lego Batman Movie’) with Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct (’Bluey’ Series 1-3). Joe Brumm will serve as executive producer, alongside Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio, and Justine Flynn for BBC Studios. The film will premiere in cinemas worldwide in 2027, followed by streaming on Disney+. The movie will also air on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia post-theatrical release. Bluey creator Joe Brumm said: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.” Daley Pearson and Charlie Aspinwall, Co-Founders and Directors, Ludo Studio, said: “Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped ‘Bluey’ into the beloved series it is today. Their work has paved the way for this incredible opportunity to expand ‘Bluey’s world onto the big screen. We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful ‘Bluey’ story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.” |

Re: For real life? The Bluey appreciation thread!
Stole this from a Facebook group Adult Bluey Fans. I thought it was a pretty good rundown of the episode Sleepytime
The episode Sleepytime is arguably one of the best, if not, the best Bluey episode ever made and as a father who has seen the episode multiple times and have relatively basic knowledge of the solar system, I wanted to give my take on the references listed whilst Bingo is dreaming. Firstly, we start off with Bingo as the Earth, depicting the main character in the solar system since it's the only planet with life. Floppy is the moon, referencing that Floppy is as important to Bingo as the moon is to the Earth and shows that life would not be the same without it. Secondly, we see yet another planet which based on the fact they head towards the sun, I would assume that it's Venus, which represents Bluey. Venus is often considered our sister planet due to the similarity in size. Thirdly, we eventually encounter Jupiter which is referenced as Bandit. This is clear when the interaction with Jupiter in Bingo's dream coincides with her interaction with Bandit in real life. The importance of Jupiter in our solar system is understated. Interstellar objects such as asteroids are often caught up in Jupiter's gravity, pulling them towards itself and preventing them from hitting Earth. Because of this, Jupiter is often referenced as the protector of our planet and has allowed us to grow into the sophisticated civilization that we are today. This links nicely with Bandit being a protector of Bingo and allowing her the space to grow. Fourthly, we see Bingo alone on the bed with no covers and she becomes cold, which shows this in the dream by placing her on what I presume is Pluto. Whilst Pluto isn't technically a planet (much to many people's dismay), it is the object that society in general reference as the furthest planet away. For a little information, the furthest recognised dwarf planet is Eris. They spot the sun and head towards it, stopping off at Saturn where Floppy goes into Saturn's rings. I can't quite confirm a solid reference from this, but the best I can come up with is that Floppy goes into Saturn's rings where she is one amongst a large space and isn't easily found. We've had it as a kid where you lose a toy important to you within a large space or amongst the chaos of any given space and it feels awful, which is where we see Bingo get upset. We then see what appears to be an asteroid or comet or meteor heading towards the sun where Bingo hops on to it and moves faster towards it. As asteroids, comets or meteors move very quickly, it shows that Bingo can't get to one location as fast as she may need to, especially where a loved one may be and shows the reference that when needed, her loved ones will come to her, without displaying the notion that the sun moves towards the planets. We then see Bingo land on presumably Mercury where she experiences the warmth and comfort of the sun, which represents Chilli. The sun, similar to Jupiter but in their own different ways, provide life to Earth and whilst Jupiter serves as the protector, the sun serves as warmth and comfort, which is displayed in the real word as Chilli cuddles with Bingo. She turns back to see Earth and says those words 'i have to go.. I'm a big girl now'. This particular moment in any kids life is a big one as it demonstrates a want and need for their independence. Sometimes they can put a lot of pressure on themselves to reach that level of independence and of course we allow them within reason, but always state that they know where to find us if it becomes too much. This is drilled home by Chilli's voice emitting from the sun stating 'remember I'll always be here for you, even if you can't see me, because I love you'. The final reference is of course when Chilli finds Floppy on the floor and returns her to Bingo, which is shown in Bingo's dream when Floppy returns as Floppy still remains an important part of Bingo's life, despite that want for independence as a child. Safe to say that Sleepytime is visually stunning, the addition of World in Union is a brilliant touch and also carries a clever reference in relation to the episode. The song World in Motion; it's melody is Thaxted, from the middle section of Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, a movement from Gustav Holst's The Planets. Factor this in along with the various references of space and the planets in our solar system, it is very well thought out and put together. I always tell other parents that Bluey is unlike any other kids cartoon out there and it's stuff like this is one of the reasons why. Sleepytime is so well known as an episode of Bluey that parents who haven't really watched it have heard of it and I always tell them that if you're one of those who can get really emotional, do not let Sleepytime be the first episode you watch because they will be a wreck. Watching Sleepytime as the first episode you see of Bluey is like trying to do your driver's test in a lorry.. it will break you, but the truth is, even if you've watched other episodes of Bluey before you watch Sleepytime, it will still break you. I've likely over thought certain references throughout this episode of Bluey, but I do hope that with the addition of some space knowledge, fans will look at this episode differently. We all know the obvious reference of Chilli being the sun, but some of the others can go over our heads a little bit unless you're aware of certain pieces of information regarding the objects in our solar system. All of the above is exactly the reason why I believe that Sleepytime is the best Bluey episode ever made. In fact, I'd go one step further and say that it's the best animated episode I have ever seen. |
