Based on the book series by Cixin Liu, the eight-episode drama, which recently wrapped production, will launch in January 2024.

Per Netflix’s logline for the sci-fi series, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”

3 Body Problem” stars Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, John Bradley, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Jonathan Pryce, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Ben Schnetzer and Zine Tseng.

Benioff, Weiss and Woo wrote the series and serve as showrunners, executive producing alongside Bernadette Caulfield, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Nena Rodrigue, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Rosamund Pike, Robie Uniacke, Lin Qi, Zhao Jilong, Fenfen Xu and Xiasong Gao.

The first two books, The Three-Body Problem and The Dark Forest, are fantastic. I've been meaning to read the third, Death's End. The books are hard sci-fi so it'll be interesting to see how well they adapt them.

I read the first book recently and loved it--I need to start on the second while I have time this summer.

There's a certain part of the book that really hit me hard with a sense of existential dread, more so than some horror novels I've read. Not sure how it will come across on screen, though. Looking forward to watching this!

There's someone behind everything. You just have to dig.
3 Body Problem premieres on Netflix March 21st, 2024.

From multiple Emmy Award-winning creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones), and Emmy-nominated Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy, True Blood) comes 3 Body Problem, a thrilling story that redefines sci-fi drama with its layered mysteries and genre-bending high stakes. Based on the acclaimed, international bestselling book trilogy, The Three-Body Problem.

A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

Has anyone here watched the China-produced tv series and/or movie based on the novel? I've been tempted to, but I am going to wait and watch this one first.

Didn't know about those two adaptations. I'll be sure to look them up.

Looks great. There's four books in the series, as well.

I didn't know there was a fourth book.

EDIT: Are you sure? I'm only seeing that it's still a trilogy.

Hopefully since they have all of the books already written they won't choke on the last season...again.

The Redemption of Time (Three Body X: Aeon of Contemplation)

The first book by Baoshu, an unauthorized fan sequel of Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past, intersected with dōjinshi and young-adult fictional experience, which evokes a lot of disagreement and discussion on the Internet, due to its unofficial nature and references to a Japanese pornographic actress. It was later published in 2011 with the permission of Liu Cixin, and Liu's publisher, Chongqing Press. It was published in English by Tor Books as The Redemption of Time in July 2019.[2]

This show has literally been in production for over 2 years. I remember when they showed an “In production” feature at a Netflix Tudum event in like 2022.

Yes, it was endorsed. I figure it's canon, as well.

I have zero knowledge about the books this is base on. But from that trailer, I'll be there day one.

Be forewarned, there are no chapter breaks in book 2. I do believe it was divided into three sections (though don't quote me on that) but that's it.

If Liu Cixin approves, it means I'll give it a shot.

Is this one season covering all the books, or is this just covering the first book?

Re: 3 Body Problem (Netflix) -- From the Creators of Game of Thrones -- premieres 3/21/24

Well its Netflix...so I fully expect it to make no sense the first season, end on a cliffhanger, and then I wait forever for the second season. Watch that and give up on the third when it ends on an even worse cliffhanger.

Then come back to it years later when I have forgot the whole damn thing.

AND THEN Binge it in a couple weeks.

I read they are combining some of all three books in the Netflix season 1.

Right now I am halfway through the first season of the Chinese series (season 1 available in Amazon Prime). Slow burn, but still interesting. From what I've read, the Chinese series is about 90% accurate with the novels, while the Netflix series will be much more different but still align with the core.

Peacock just picked up the Chinese version of this series also based on the book. Drops tomorrow. 30 episodes total.

They've been on Amazon for a while now. I wonder if they'll be leaving Amazon in general. I watched the first episode and it was cool.

If this follows the books there's close to zero chance this gets a third or fourth season, since Netflix reliably cancels everything after at most two seasons. I don't know why producers come to Netflix of all places with a plan for more than two seasons of anything, even if Netflix is more sci-fi and fantasy friendly than its competition.

I was already beat to the "it'll be canceled after two" punch, so I'll go with . . . until they decide it needs more seasons than books.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or bad thing that I have no idea what’s going on. I get a Lost meets Inception vibe.

A few co-workers of mine were talking about this the other day. They bought the books and were excited to read it before getting into the show.

I’m not really a big reader of fiction books, so I’m just going to go in. I don’t plan to watch the Chinese version either.
