Re: Winning Time - Season 2 Thread (HBO) - Premieres 8/6/23
Suddenly all the unexpected praise from Jeanie makes a lot more sense.
I really loved these last two episodes. So great to see such good, intense work from Aiden Brody after 20 years of sleepwalking through roles. Don’t know who Gillian Jacobs lost a bed to, but she’s way too famous and too talented to play such a tiny and underwritten part.
Never knew that about Dr Buss’ second wife. That’s terrible.
The needle drops are almost as impressive as the cast. I have totally dug the soundtrack.

And John C. Reilly is absolutely breathtaking as my dad,” Jeanie said. “And and whether he he could feel that he could channel Jerry Buss. You know, the writers gave him great material. You know I mean the performance and how he wasn’t talked about for an award or several awards. I hope that this season, just from what I’ve seen so far, he should definitely be considered. He’s absolutely fabulous.
“And I got a chance to meet him at a Laker game and I literally cross paths with him in the chairman’s room at the arena. And I thought for a second, I really should introduce myself to him because I knew he was playing my dad. And I said it’s by chance I’m here. I’ve got to take this moment. So I introduce myself to him. And the look on his face, he goes, ‘Are you throwing me out?’ And I go, ‘Why would I throw you out?’ I said, ‘I just I really want you to hear this story. I have to tell you the story that one of the things that my dad and I did, one of our passions was to go to the movies. And my dad being very busy when when we did get a day to go to the movies, he’d want to see two or three or four in one day. And so we had seen the movie Chicago and John C. Reilly was fantastic in that film.
“And after we watched the film, my dad said to me, it goes, I think I think he’s going to win an award. He was really he was really good. And when somebody that it can be so funny can play such a tragic character. I said, ‘I think he’d be really honored that you were playing him.'”

Yup, just finished it, and it's not the end of the season, they added an epilogue and it's the series finale.
What a fucking bummer.

Ugh, the news I dreaded and feared. Too expensive, not enough eyeballs.
But what a cool show it was.

Damn, what a bummer. And that was a great episode too. I guess it was supposed to end with that shot of Magic depressed in the shower until that added that epilogue. The stories said this wasn't the cut the critics received when they got early access to the season.
There was some really good basketball sequences in this episode too.
I know season 1 was a moderate hit, but I think this was a hard show to sell to the masses who didn't live in Los Angeles or Boston or doesn't watch basketball.
BTW, I loved the old HBO animated graphic at the beginning as well as the CBS Sports open with Musburger's narration. They did a great job with details.

Courtney Friel, a reporter here in LA and the wife of one of the producers, said on her IG story that HBO asked the producers to put on that epilogue a few weeks ago. So she had a feeling tonight’s news was coming. She had a cameo in episode 6. She played the reporter outside of Kareem’s house when it burned down.

I haven’t watched the last episode but not sure if I will now. What a dumb decision. Maybe Netflix will pick it up or something.

Viewership wasn't very good on it, I'm pretty sure it's toast.

And I know you said you didn't watch that era of Lakers history, but you should finish it. Aside from it ending on a downer, it's a solid episode.

I'll throw on my flame jacket but a show about 80's basketball ending with Celtics winning is probably the most true to life this show got.
Also, damn WB/HBO for cancelling it.

Pre-Zazlov, this show would have gotten a third season I suspect.

Sometime in 2024 when WBD decides to remove the show.
Random person: "There was a TV show about the Lakers???? I had no idea.
For the record, you can buy the show on Amazon digitally
and season 1 is on BD with bonus features
I'm curious if they really planned season 2 for 7 episodes or if someone from WBD only gave them enough money to make 7 episodes so they had to rush through some of the story to get to the 1984 Finals.

Daw. It was a great show. Being cancelled for cost and viewership is understandable. But it was great while it lasted.
Also, I thought it was relatively popular in comparison to other premium cable shows. I'm in a bubble of film and tv nerds.

This show had some really great casting. John C. Reilly was great as Doctor Buss. I couldn't imagine Will Ferrell playing him, but that was the reason for the end of his and McKay's friendship because he was butt hurt that he was replaced by Reilly.
Quincy Isaiah and Solomon Hughes were born to play Magic and Kareem. I know actors come and go, but I hope we won't see the last of Isaiah. He was very charismatic.

Hughes looked way too old.
Quincy Isaiah was a true revelation. There were times when I really, honestly felt like I was watching Magic Johnson. And this is coming from someone whose unquestionable #1 favorite sports figure for at least 30 years was Magic. Such an underrated performance, and in a show absolutely STACKED with A-List talent.

What a shame that this show was cancelled. It was my favorite show currently on TV. I was a big basketball fan back in that era, and a Blazers season ticket holder, and I HATED the Lakers. But I love this show.
