Sorry if this should have gone in the Anime Forum, but it feels big enough to be in the TV one to me. Very excited to hear about this.

So are they just remaking the movie? A lot of those shots in the trailer looked familiar... but animated.

I mean they're remaking the comic which the movie also remade, so yeah?

I wouldn't mind if the series was just a remake of the comic, because one thing about the comic (as opposed to Wright's film) was that Knives was clingy, insufferable, and annoying, while Ramona was mysterious and alluring. Anyone who watched the film first (like I did) wondered why Scott would dump Ellen Wong's delightful Knives in the first place and chase after the disinterested and aloof Ramona as Mary Elizabeth Winstead played her. Other than the fact that Knives was just 17, of course.
Never could figure out if that was great acting by Wong, making the character fun and interesting, or terrible acting because her portrayal was nothing like the character was originally created to be. Leaning towards the former (and not just because Ellen Wong is literally the coolest celebrity I've ever met in person by a mile), with Knives telling Scott "I'm too cool for you" at the end, making her a character that deserves better than selfish-ass Scott.

It does make Scott come across as a selfish jerk, though, which is what he is (and what everyone around him aptly points out when they find out about Knives), so there's that.

This comes out today. Alan Sepinwall issued a big, if nebulous, spoiler warning :
Today brings the Netflix premiere of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, an eight-part anime, written by Scott’s creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, and by BenDavid Grabinski, and it’s… well, it’s very hard to talk about in advance, because of the things O’Malley and Grabinski have added or changed from the comic book and film. I will say that I enjoyed the hell out of it, but I am, again, in the tank for this property by now. And if you are like me in that regard, I strongly suggest either watching the first few episodes as soon as possible, or staying off social media until you do.

I watched the first two episodes. Sepinwall is right about the warning.
I will say that the voice acting is a bit of a disappointment, at least in these early episodes. Some of it comes off like a line reading more than a performance. Others are a bit better.

I’ve only watched the first episode so far but had the same reaction about the voice acting.

Pretty much every headline I've seen about this series today has spoiled the twist without even going to the article which is too bad.

My wife and I watched the whole series today. Intended to just start it but once we did we just kept on going until it was over. We both liked it overall. I’m not familiar with the franchise beyond the movie and a little bit of the video game. I’d like to read the graphic novels eventually.

For much of the first episode I was like "they are running through this content really fast if they just want to do a straight retelling in the episodes that they have" but then out of nowhere. Unfortunate that the "twist" is all over the place but that's to be expected and hopefully will bring in people who didn't want just a straightforward remake.

I watched the first 3 episodes and I didn't care for it. I never read the source material, maybe this is closer. And what's the deal with Knives eyes, creepy. I really like the movie and this was a big disappointment.

The drawing style is closer to the source material but otherwise the plot of the comic is basically the same as the movie, this is more of a "what if"
