Just watched this. Am loving it right from the get-go. Even though I've played the first game numerous times, this had me glued to my seat. Really looking forward to the rest. 
EDIT: Wanted to add that I too did not recognize Anna Torv. I was shocked to see her name in the end credits.

For what it's worth, yes, zombies drive the plot forward... but this show is about redemption and a father who lost his daughter and is taking on the role with a young girl who really needs him -- despite her hard-ass shell. I haven't, obviously, seen how this show will play out but the video game plot was excellent. Not good, excellent.

Though familiar with the game, I have never played. But one thing I have always known about the game from reviews and fan comments us it was ALWAYS about the STORY, The People, the relationships, the choices, having and understanding what your actions and deeds can bring, etc. Based on what the show runners talk about in the podcast, those same things are definitely true about this show. The Infected/"Zombies" are important but that's not the focus of the show.
